WASHINGTON (Reuters) -A federal judge on Sunday reinstated a gag order she imposed on Donald Trump in the Washington case accusing him of trying to overturn his 2020 election defeat, denying his bid for a stay pending appeal. The order prohibited Trump from targeting the special counsel prosecuting his case or witnesses who might be called to testify about his efforts to upend his election loss. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan imposed the gag order at the Justice Department's request. A copy of the judge's written decision reinstating the gag order was not immediately available. Trump in the past has called Special Counsel Jack Smith a "deranged lunatic" and a "thug," among other insults.

Former President Donald Trump is facing four separate indictments at both state and federal levels. WSJ breaks down each of the indictments and what they mean for his 2024 presidential campaign. Photo Illustration: Annie ZhaoJustice might be blind, but the two separate federal prosecutions of former President Donald Trump are showing how differently judges mete it out, coloring the pace and tenor of the high-profile cases months before they come to trial. In a courthouse blocks from the U.S. Capitol, the judge presiding over Trump’s trial on charges of conspiring to reverse the 2020 presidential election agreed this week with prosecutors arguing that the former president’s attacks on the special counsel team and potential witnesses threatened the integrity of the case and should be restricted. When Trump’s lawyer said existing limits on Trump’s contact with witnesses sufficed, the judge, Tanya Chutkan , laughed.

A trial date in a fourth criminal case has not yet been set. Trump's lawyers had pressed for an April 2026 trial date, well past the November 2024 presidential election, arguing that they needed time to go through the 12.8 million pages of evidence the government had amassed. Trump's trial is due to start one day before "Super Tuesday," when more than a dozen U.S. states will hold their presidential nominating contests. A trial date for the fourth criminal case in Georgia has not yet been set. Trump will have to make the trial date work, regardless of his schedule," Chutkan said.

"In our judgment, that trial date is inconsistent with President Trump's right to due process and the right to effective assistance of counsel," Lauro said in the hearing. But Trump's proposal for an April 2026 trial date went "far beyond what is necessary," the judge said, NBC News reported. A federal judge on Monday set a March 4, 2024, trial date in former President Donald Trump 's criminal election interference case, putting the top Republican presidential candidate on trial in Washington, D.C., seven months before the 2024 general election . Trump, a top Republican presidential candidate who is facing four separate criminal cases, has sought to move his trials past the November 2024 election. Chutkan noted Monday that she spoke with the New York judge overseeing Trump's case in Manhattan, which is also set to go to trial in March.
