Washington CNN —Former President Donald Trump told two fictional stories about Oprah Winfrey on Saturday – one of them new, another he has been telling for at least 11 years. In a social media post late Saturday night, Trump wrote, “A long time ago, Oprah Winfrey asked me to do her last Network Television Show. He did not appear on the last episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 2011, nor even in the star-studded final week of the show. At a campaign rally in North Carolina earlier on Saturday, Trump said: “And didn’t Oprah ask her about her time at McDonald’s? Rather, Winfrey passingly mentioned the McDonald’s job during her introduction of Harris – before the vice president walked onstage for their conversation.

Trump defeated Joe Biden by 1 point in North Carolina in 2020. North Carolina is an vital part of that plan. However, the lieutenant governor has been to most, if not all, of Trump’s recent North Carolina events. The question, though, is whether a poor performance by Robinson would drag down other members of the party’s ticket in North Carolina, including Trump.

Independent analyses suggest Mr. Trump’s plans could add close to $4 trillion over the next decade to America’s already fast-growing national debt, even after factoring in additional revenues from new taxes he wants to impose on imports. It is impossible to make a similarly precise estimate for Vice President Kamala Harris, Mr. Trump’s Democratic opponent this fall. She has not laid out any tax or spending plans, or other economic policy proposals, with enough detail to estimate whether they would add to deficits or reduce them. But on Friday, after this article published online, Harris campaign officials said they would point to President Biden’s most recent budget proposal as an indicator of Ms. Harris’s future fiscal policy plans.

The Chairman of Ways and Means has power under the law to look at private taxpayer data but must demonstrate a legitimate legislative purpose. During the 2016 campaign, Mr. Trump refused to release his tax returns, and we criticized him for it. Mr. Trump resisted, and Mr. Neal finally won in court last month.
