WASHINGTON — Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of the nation’s top public health experts, signaled that he feels free to speak honestly about Covid-19 now that former President Donald Trump is out of office. Fauci helped lead the nation's response to the coronavirus when the pandemic first hit nearly a year ago, working alongside Trump and members of his White House coronavirus task force. Fauci said that just 15 minutes before the news conference he had met with Biden and discussed how "everything we do will be based on science and evidence." "One of the new things about this administration is that if you don't know the answer, don't guess. Just say you don't know the answer," Fauci said in response to a reporter's question on a matter he was unaware of.

REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque/File PhotoWASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden issued an executive order on Thursday that would require international air travelers to quarantine upon U.S. arrival, and directed U.S. agencies to implement a federal mask mandate in interstate transportation. The CDC recommends a seven-day quarantine for people arriving in the Unites States from nearly all countries. The Biden administration is implementing new coronavirus testing requirements for nearly all international air passengers beginning on Tuesday, following a CDC order last week. Mr. Trump’s administration reversed that decision in early 2017, giving a green light for construction of the project to begin. Another major chain, Kroger, said it was vaccinating health care workers in selected parts of five states, including California and Texas, and other chains and states said they were in discussions to do more. Getting involved in vaccine distribution is an important business opportunity for pharmacies to prove their relevance to consumers. In a historic vote, the House of Representatives on Wednesday impeached President Donald Trump for urging his supporters to march on the U.S. Capitol last week, making him the first president to be impeached twice. The article of impeachment, for "incitement of insurrection," was adopted by the Democratic-controlled House, 232 to 197, after several hours of debate. A group of 10 Republicans joined Democrats in voting to impeach Trump. That remark came just hours before the House approved a separate resolution calling on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove the president from office. Read the highlights:— Pence rejected House Democrats' demand to invoke the 25th Amendment as more Republicans back impeachment.

This week Trump berated Pence to his face, one source said. Pence, a former Indiana governor and former Republican lawmaker who harbors presidential ambitions, has been loyal to Trump throughout the president’s four years in office. The White House declined to comment. The statement was seen by some close to the White House as an attempt to forestall a wave of resignations.

Stephanie Grisham, chief of staff for first lady Melania Trump, and Sarah Matthews, White House deputy press secretary, both resigned Wednesday after the violent rioting on Capitol Hill. Grisham, who is also a former Trump White House press secretary, submitted her resignation letter Wednesday afternoon in part over the riots, Javers reported. "It has been an honor to serve the country in the White House," Grisham said in a statement. Several law enforcement officials said a woman who was shot inside the Capitol building during the chaos had died. Congress on Wednesday night resumed the process to confirm Biden's win after the Capitol Building had been secured.

The press secretary for Andrew Yang's Humanity Forward organization told Insider that the group has discussed potential recurring economic relief with the incoming Biden administration. Yang has long been a proponent for universal basic income (UBI), making it a key plank of his presidential campaign. Humanity Forward was created to, among other missions, support candidates who back UBI and implement UBI for some Americans. Former presidential candidate Andrew Yang's nonprofit, Humanity Forward, has spoken to the incoming administration of President-elect Joe Biden about universal basic income (UBI), according to Press Secretary Greg Nasif. "I don't want to give away too many details, but we have discussed with them our support for direct recurring economic relief," Nasif told Insider.

Philip Esformes acquired a $1.6 million Ferrari and a $360,000 Swiss watch and traveled around the United States on a private jet, a spending spree fueled by the spoils from what federal prosecutors called one of the largest Medicare fraud cases in history. “Philip Esformes is a man driven by almost unbounded greed,” Denise M. Stemen, an agent in the F.B.I.’s Miami field office, said last year after Mr. Esformes, 52, a nursing home operator, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the two-decade scheme that involved an estimated $1.3 billion worth of fraudulent claims. That prison term ended suddenly this week, when President Trump commuted what remained of Mr. Esformes’s sentence. His rapid path to clemency is a case study in how criminals with the right connections and resources have been able to cut through normal channels and gain the opportunity to make their case straight to the Trump White House.
