ASHEVILLE, N.C. — America’s largest privately-owned estate has abruptly shut down in Asheville after Hurricane Helene caused extensive flooding and building damage along the 8,000 acre property. The iconic Biltmore Estate, situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains, spans 175,000 square feet, boasts 250 rooms, 43 bathrooms, 65 fireplaces and 22 miles of walking trail. “We are still assessing impacts to the estate from Tropical Storm Helene and that will take some time,” the estate said. In forested areas, which is a large portion of the estate, wind damage is extensive to grounds and some structures.” The post also said crews are clearing roads to start repairs. Last weekend, tree branches, logs and a dumpster floated across the nearby Biltmore Village after the area was submerged in water in the wake of the initial landfall.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg spoke directly to Elon Musk Friday on the billionaire's X platform, part of an effort to counter false conspiracies about federal disaster aid for victims of Hurricane Helene that Musk spread on X, where his follower count stands over 200 million. "No one is shutting down the airspace and FAA doesn't block legitimate rescue and recovery flights," wrote Buttigieg. Buttigieg was replying to a post from Musk that falsely claimed the Federal Aviation Administration was shutting down airspace in the disaster zone and "throttling" flights transporting supplies. An FAA spokesperson told CNBC, "There are no airspace restrictions in place in North Carolina as rescue efforts continue because of Hurricane Helene. Musk frequently uses X to provoke -- but in lashing out at FEMA on Friday, he escalated his battle with the U.S. government.

Hurricane Helene made landfall near Perry, Florida, as a Category 4 storm with 140 mph sustained winds and higher gusts. Hurricanes are rated 1 through 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale based on their wind speed. Damage is exponential as wind speed increases, meaning a strong Category 3 storm could do up to 60 times as much damage as a weak Category 1 storm. Well-built homes will be heavily damaged, with most of the roof blown away. Most well-built homes will be destroyed, and many will be stripped to the foundation.

CNN —Thousands of Florida residents have been forced to evacuate as the state prepares for rapidly strengthening Tropical Storm Helene, which could bring powerful winds, flooding and life-threatening storm surge to areas already hard-hit by recent hurricanes. The Big Bend area faces the most serious storm surge: up to 15 feet of it is possible. Over in Sanibel, one couple who met during Hurricane Ian in 2022 and nearly lost everything are now going to weather Tropical Storm Helene together, CNN affiliate WINK reported. Hurricane warnings were issued Tuesday for a wide stretch of Florida’s Gulf Coast ahead of Tropical Storm Helene’s anticipated landfall as a major hurricane later this week, forecasters said. Officials in Mexico also issued hurricane warnings for a large section of the Yucatan Peninsula, stretching from the tourist hotspot of Tulum to Cabo Catoche, on the peninsula’s northern tip, the National Hurricane Center said in an afternoon advisory. The storm is expected to strengthen into a hurricane on Wednesday as it moves across the eastern Gulf of Mexico before becoming a major storm Thursday, according to the advisory. Helene's storm surge is expected to raise water levels in Tampa Bay by as much as 8 feet. Helene's large size will likely mean the storm's hazards will hit an extensive area, the advisory says.
