"If you have that money in southern Italy, you can live like a king, including renting or purchasing a property." If you're hoping to retire in style while keeping costs low, a European retirement may be right for you. That's true for luxury vacation hotspots such as Lake Como and Saint-Tropez, though you may not find what you're looking for in those places anyway. So they have beaches, a walkable town, restaurants, bars, trains — they live on the main line," Sikes says. Roberto Cavalli, the Italian-born fashion designer who celebrated glamour and excess, sending models down the runway and actresses onto red carpets wearing leopard-print dresses, bejeweled distressed jeans, satin corsets and other unapologetically flashy clothes, has died. His company announced the death on Instagram but provided no details. Mr. Cavalli’s signature style — “molto sexy, molto animal print and molto, molto Italiano,” as the British newspaper The Independent once described it — remained essentially unchanged throughout his long career. But he skillfully reinvented his clothes for different eras, enjoying several renaissances and building a global lifestyle brand in the process. When the model Naomi Campbell wore a pair during a runway show in 1993, stretch jeans became a huge trend.

Roberto Cavalli, a Life Out Loud

His animal prints did not always originate from nature but from his own imagination, chimeras of exotic skins that telegraphed excess, sex and aspiration. If Gianni Versace was the id of Italian fashion, Mr. Cavalli made it roar, hitting mass saturation in the late nineties as an antidote to the minimalism of Jil Sander and Helmut Lang. He stepped into the vacuum created by the murder of Mr. Versace in 1997, was further buoyed by the frothy stock market, and soon, Paris Hilton was wearing him. So was Candace Bushnell, creator of “Sex and the City.” Victoria Beckham was a fan during her Posh Spice era. Little wonder he was the main sponsor of the 2004 show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute: “Wild: Fashion Untamed” — or that Ben Stiller wore Mr. Cavalli’s designs for “Zoolander,” Mr. Stiller’s fashion satire.

CNN —Roberto Cavalli, the Italian fashion designer who made his mark on the fashion world with distinctive, glamorous animal prints, has died at the age of 83. Roberto Cavalli walks the runway after a fashion show showcasing his label's designs in Budva, Montenegro on June 10, 2013. Along with animal prints and intarsia leather, denim became a core element of his signature style, leading to the establishment of a more youthful offshoot brand, Just Cavalli, in 1998. Flanked by models in quintessential Cavalli florals and animal prints, Roberto Cavalli takes his bow after his label's Spring-Summer 2015 menswear show at Milan Fashion Week on June 24, 2014. “Dear Roberto, you may not be physically here with us anymore but I know I will feel your spirit with me always.

Phillipson describes life in Bahrain as idyll — as it is for many educated, mostly Western professionals who have arrived in Bahrain like her. There's also a much-stronger work-life balance, she said, with less expectation to be on call outside office hours compared with her London life. "I'd not even heard of it before I moved here, but I don't have any plans on leaving anytime soon."

Sept 15 (Reuters) - New Zealand's SailGP team will not be able to compete in Taranto, Italy, due to the impossibility of transporting and fitting a replacement wing sail in time, SailGP said on Friday. The dramatic collapse of the New Zealand team's 29-metre wing sail was caused by a misalignment in Saint-Tropez last weekend. Following the incident, SailGP investigated options for transporting a spare wing from the fleet and assembling it so the team would be ready to compete, but this has been prevented by shipping deadlines. SailGP said it is working to find a solution that will allow New Zealand to return to the starting line on Oct. 14-15 in Cadiz, Spain. After three events in the season, New Zealand is in fifth place with 17 points.

The Met Gala, which will be held next week, serves as the unofficial birthday party for Vogue magazine. The outfits at Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World gala, held last night at Jazz at Lincoln Center, generally don’t involve as much forethought, but it is nevertheless an opulent affair. Tiffany Haddish wore a red and black sequined gown and Natasha Lyonne was in a black Area dress with a bedazzled oyster bodice. The storied masquerade party and annual gala dinner raises money to preserve the artworks of the flood-threatened Italian city. The event raised $1.2 million and transformed the Plaza into an arms-in-the-air dance party with the D.J.
ON MAY 12, 1971, Nicaraguan socialite Bianca Pérez-Mora Macías married Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger in a shotgun wedding in Saint-Tropez. (Bianca was four months pregnant with their daughter Jade.) Not only did she wed one of the era’s biggest heartthrobs, she shunned froufrou wedding gowns and opted for a risqué white suit by Yves Saint Laurent. While the outfit might not provoke comment now, it did then—in part because Ms. Jagger wore nothing beneath the plunging jacket. Ms. Müller suggested that Ms. Jagger’s suit might have been an offshoot of the late Saint Laurent’s subversive spring 1971 couture collection.

As the US dollar rises, more wealthy Americans are investing their money overseas — especially in European real estate. According to global real estate company Knight Frank, Paris, St. Tropez, Tuscany, Venice, Barcelona, Mallorca, and Sardinia, have become the most popular European real estate markets for American home buyers. The researchers also noted that real estate in Venice is more receptive to negotiation than in other parts of the country. Real estate in Spain is also proving popular among Americans, with Barcelona and Mallorca being the standouts, according to Knight Frank.
