Starbucks has tapped Chipotle alum Tressie Lieberman as its global chief brand officer, a newly created position and the latest executive change under Brian Niccol after he left Chipotle and took over as CEO of the coffee chain last month. She has a proven track record of building strong brands, developing compelling products, creating great customer experiences, and leading breakthrough marketing," Niccol said in a statement on Friday. Niccol created a similar global chief brand officer role at Chipotle when he took over there in 2018. Most recently, she served as chief marketing officer for Yahoo. Starbucks' China business has been struggling, hurt by the country's sluggish economy and the proliferation of local coffee chains that can undercut its prices.

James Chance, No Wave and Punk-Funk Pioneer, Dies at 71

James Chance, the singer, saxophonist and composer who melded punk, funk and free jazz into bristling dance music as the leader of the Contortions, died on Tuesday in Manhattan. His brother, David Siegfried, said Mr. Chance had been in declining health for years and succumbed to complications of gastrointestinal disease at the Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center in East Harlem. Contortions songs like “I Can’t Stand Myself” and “Throw Me Away” filled the rhythmic structures of James Brown’s funk with angular, dissonant riffs, to be topped by Mr. Chance’s yelping, blurting, screaming vocals and his trilling, squawking alto saxophone. He was a live wire onstage, with his own twitchy versions of moves adapted from Brown, Mick Jagger and his punk contemporaries.

Rwanda, the court said, might send them back to countries where their lives could be at risk. The law that passed last week aims to override that court ruling by declaring that Rwanda is safe. Legality aside, it has never been clear that the policy is even capable of working. So what is the point of the Rwanda policy? But Mr. Sunak — under pressure from his party’s right to accede to their demands on immigration — needs an emphatic win, or at least something that looks like one.

Sometimes a pine cone is just a pine cone. “Growing up, I had some challenges,” Ms. Oppenheimer said, referring to her prickly teenage past, “some struggles with managing my emotions.”But her grandmother, who died four years ago, was soft like the feather, and gave her unconditional love that reminded Ms. Oppenheimer how important it was to treat herself with “soothing tenderness,” especially when she became self-critical. Ms. Oppenheimer and her clinical supervisor, Heidi Schreiber-Pan, were visiting Talmar, a nonprofit farm that offers therapeutic programs and vocational training — a short drive from the busy road and nondescript strip malls near their office. At the farm, the only sounds were a burbling stream, trilling birds and several inches of snow crunching beneath their feet. It was the perfect location to teach Ms. Oppenheimer therapeutic techniques that make use of the natural world.

Opinion | Can Liberalism Save Itself?

Yet just a few years later, Cold War liberalism emerged as a rejection of the optimism that flourished before the mid-20th century’s crises. This was a liberalism of fear, as another Cold War liberal intellectual, the Harvard professor Judith Shklar, said. In a way, fear was understandable: Liberalism had enemies. The Cold War changed all that. “We must be aware of the dangers which lie in our most generous wishes,” the Columbia professor and Cold War liberal Lionel Trilling explained.

So they need to think of other ways to generate pressure," Kallas told Insider. "This shows what students and Starbucks workers demanding accountability can look like," Brisack told Insider. Union organizers across these stores, many of whom were also Cornell students, said the closures constituted an act of union-busting. Sara Trilling, president of Starbucks North America, said Starbucks later closed the remaining Ithaca stores in an ongoing effort to "transform our store portfolio." Evan Sunshine, a Cornell student who worked at two different Ithaca Starbucks locations until each one closed, said Cornell's decision is a step in the right direction.

I’ve Listened to This Breakup Song a Million Times

Eventually I ended up in the back of a cab in Bushwick, listening to the song on repeat. The perfect breakup song must also be a sort of theater, where the singer becomes the character fully. The very cadence of the song, her voice, sonically pristine, still spells out a certain longing and despair. It feels as if the song were creating its own black hole when it was made. Who can escape the condensed emotional singularity of a breakup song?

Companies Starbucks Corp FollowJune 26 (Reuters) - Starbucks (SBUX.O) plans to issue "clearer" centralized guidelines for in-store visual displays following a union's allegations that managers banned Pride-themed decor, the coffee chain said in an internal memo to employees. "We intend to issue clearer centralized guidelines... for in-store visual displays and decorations that will continue to represent inclusivity and our brand," Starbucks North America President Sara Trilling said in the memo. The memo comes after the union representing the coffee chain's baristas alleged that managers at dozens of Starbucks locations had prevented employees from putting up Pride Month flags and decorations, or had removed them. More than 3,000 workers at over 150 Starbucks stores in the United States will walk off the job, the union said on Friday. Starbucks also filed two complaints against Workers United with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) on Monday, alleging that the union made misleading claims on the company's in-store decoration guidelines and gender-affirming care benefits.

Protesters in Seattle join a Starbucks Workers United strike over what the union alleges is a change in policy over Pride décor in stores. More than 150 stores pledged to join the strikes around the country, representing nearly 3,500 workers, Workers United said. In the NLRB complaint Monday tied to the union's allegations, Starbucks said the "union and its agents have engaged in a smear campaign that includes deliberate misrepresentations to Starbucks partners." "The union's violations have ignited and inflamed workplace tension and division and provoked strikes and other business disruptions in Starbucks stores," Starbucks said in the filing. "While attacking the union that represents its own workers, Starbucks has now changed its policies in response to worker actions.

New York CNN —Starbucks will clarify its policy on Pride decorations following criticism and strikes at unionized stores. The new guidance comes as staffers are on strike over Starbucks' treatment of its workers. Neither the post nor a Starbucks spokesperson clarified exactly what the guidelines would say. A spokesperson for Starbucks Workers United said that the chain had not informed the union about the clarified guidelines. Since Friday, union members at about 150 stores representing 3,500 workers have been on strike over the Pride guidelines and Starbucks' approach to bargaining contracts with employees. Since then, about 8,000 workers in 333 Starbucks stores have opted to unionize, though no store has won a contract yet, according to Workers United.

NEW YORK, Feb 21 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Starbucks (SBUX.O) is embracing the buzz. The coffee chain filed a new patent for a machine to help customize complicated beverages, according to a Business Insider report on Monday. Incoming Chief Executive Laxman Narasimhan faces staffers increasingly eager to unionize just as U.S. labor shortages hover at highs. It is therefore hardly surprising that $123 billion Starbucks wants to streamline drink-making processes. They do not reflect the views of Reuters News, which, under the Trust Principles, is committed to integrity, independence, and freedom from bias.
Starbucks filed a fresh patent for a machine that enables workers to make customized drinks quicker. Modifications drive customers to Starbucks and bring in high profits, but cause headaches for staff. When Insider tested out ordering a customized Starbucks drink online, syrups were the pricier option, costing up to 80 cents to add on. Customers can also get rude when their customized drinks take a long time to make or aren't made perfectly, many baristas said. Customers could ask for a beverage to match their outfit, and these could be mapped by the machine, the patent said.
Starbucks previously reported that premium add-ons like syrups are a $1 billion business. A drop in traffic amid a looming 2023 recession could also hit Starbucks. Jefferies is "baking into our forecast" that a recession will lower US same-store sales at Starbucks due to negative traffic growth, Barish said. Those modifiers are big business for Starbucks, according to Sara Trilling, president of Starbucks North America. Add-ons are a $1 billion "high margin" business for Starbucks that has doubled since 2019, the company said during the November call.
