And this is our way of undoing that,” Leguizamo said in a video interview with series co-creator Ben DeJesus. NGL StudiosPart of the challenge of telling Latino history, Leguizamo said, is that you have to find it. “It was years and years of studying Latin history,” the actor reflected. Ultimately, both co-creators noted, something even deadlier than guns and steel would lead to the demise of these Latin American kingdoms and empires. “It empowers you, it gives you a sense that you matter, that you’re important, and the kids especially feel that.”For DeJesus, knowing Latino history also gives you a sense of belonging.

The dispute involves land, known as Hickory Ground, that was home to the Muscogee Nation before removal to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears. The Muscogee Nation is appealing a federal judge’s decision to dismiss their lawsuit over the casino construction. “Hickory Ground is sacred,” Mary Kathryn Nagle, an attorney representing the Muscogee Nation told the three-judge panel. PHOENIX — Members of an Arizona tribe are trying to persuade a federal judge to extend a temporary ban on exploratory drilling for a lithium project near lands they have used for religious and cultural ceremonies for centuries. The case is among the latest legal fights pitting Native American tribes and environmentalists against President Joe Biden’s administration as green energy projects encroach on lands that are culturally significant. The springs have served as a place of healing and prayer for generations, the tribe has said in court filings. Federal land managers also are expected to issue a draft environmental review of a lithium mine planned by Australian company Ioneer Ltd. between Reno and Las Vegas. Backers of Arizona Lithium’s project include the Navajo Transitional Energy Company, which announced its plans in 2022 to join with the Australian company and work as a contractor on the project.

If you’re viewing the moon on Tuesday evening, for about an hour it will also appear as if a bite has been taken out of it due to a partial lunar eclipse. A partial lunar eclipse occurs when Earth moves between the sun and the full moon without being perfectly aligned. During a total lunar eclipse, Earth’s shadow can turn the moon’s surface a striking red color, which is known as a blood moon, according to NASA. Klein said the Department of Housing and Urban Development on Thursday will also announce a new office targeting gender-based violence that will help survivors get secure housing and economic stability. The initial legislation, which was passed through a bipartisan crime bill in 1994, included the first National Domestic Violence Hotline. Biden's American Rescue Plan also included investments targeting gender-based violence. The Family Violence Prevention and Services Act program reported that roughly $1 billion in supplemental funding has supported 252 tribes, 1,500 domestic violence programs and 1,400 sexual assault programs.

Shyamalan's biggest cinematic failure was "The Last Airbender," an adaptation of a beloved animated series. Together, with Katara (Nicola Peltz Beckham) and Sokka (Jackson Rathbone), Aang fends off enemies, including Prince Zuko (Dev Patel), seeking to control and harness his powers. While the film's source material is generally considered one of the best animated series of the 2000s, M. Night Shyamalan's adaptation was derided as a boring, slow-moving mess that woefully underutilized Patel, a talented performer who had catapulted to stardom two years earlier with "Slumdog Millionaire." "It is incredible how awful the once feted director M. Night Shyamalan has become and how he is still allowed to make big-budget films," wrote The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw. "I didn't think it was possible for him to make something worse than his 'Lady in the Water' or 'The Happening.'

NEW YORK AP —Tucked within the expansive Native American halls of the American Museum of Natural History is a diminutive wooden doll that holds a sacred place among the tribes whose territories once included Manhattan. We need them close.”Sean Decatur, the New York museum’s president, promised tribes will hear from officials soon. The American Museum of Natural History, he noted, is one of New York’s major tourism draws and also a mainstay for generations of area students learning about the region’s tribes. He suggests museums use replicas made by Native peoples so that sensitive cultural items aren’t physically on display.

The Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that members of the wealthy Sackler family cannot be shielded from lawsuits over their role in the opioid crisis as part of a bankruptcy settlement that would channel billions of dollars to victims and their families. In a 5-to-4 decision, written by Justice Neil M. Gorsuch, a majority of the justices held that the federal bankruptcy code does not authorize a liability shield for third parties in bankruptcy agreements. Justice Gorsuch was joined by Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel A. Alito Jr., Amy Coney Barrett and Ketanji Brown Jackson. In a strongly worded dissent, Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh wrote that the “decision is wrong on the law and devastating for more than 100,000 opioid victims and their families.” He was joined by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan. The decision jeopardizes a carefully negotiated settlement Purdue and the Sacklers had reached in which members of the family promised to give up to $6 billion to states, local governments, tribes and individuals to address a devastating public health crisis.

The hard-fought settlement of thousands of lawsuits against Purdue Pharma was close to capsizing on Thursday, after the Supreme Court rejected liability protections for the company’s owners. The ruling effectively prevents the release of billions of dollars that could help alleviate the ravages of opioid addiction. The future of the cases, some of which are a decade old, is now in limbo, as states, local governments, tribes and more than 100,000 individuals who sued the company, best-known for its prescription painkiller OxyContin, figure out next moves. The court effectively upended the settlement by striking down a provision that Purdue’s owners, members of the billionaire Sackler family, had insisted upon: immunity from all current and future opioid lawsuits in return for payments of up to $6 billion to plaintiffs. In a statement, Purdue called the decision “heart-crushing,” because the settlement had been agreed to by an overwhelming majority of plaintiffs.

At least five people died from gunshot wounds, civic groups said, and crowds breached the Parliament amid plumes of smoke as days of protests against the tax bill ended with police and protesters clashing. Typically a regional bastion of economic security, Kenya has a population of over 54 million. Here is what we know about the contentious legislation that set off Tuesday’s clashes.
