He joked that his not getting the gig paved the way for Jon Stewart to bring back the show's ratings. On This Saturday Night, Colin Jost’s Jokes Fell Flat
  + stars: | 2024-04-28 | by ( Jason Zinoman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
People in the media have long worried about the impact of the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on journalism. Colin Jost’s set this year does not belong in that pantheon. With long pauses between jokes, eyes darting side to side, he occasionally took a drink of water and at least once acknowledged the lack of laughter in the room. His jokes leaned on wordplay more than a specific or novel perspective. “Some incredible news organizations here,” began one of his pricklier jokes, finished by: “Also, some credible ones.”

New York CNN —Jon Stewart on “The Daily Show” Monday revealed what led to his abrupt exit from Apple and the cancellation of his short-lived show on its streaming TV platform. Stewart said that the tech giant prohibited from discussing artificial intelligence or interviewing Federal Trade Commission chair Lina Khan. Stewart and Khan discussed Big Tech monopolies, after the US Justice Department and more than a dozen states sued Apple last week in a blockbuster antitrust lawsuit that accused Apple of illegally monopolizing the smartphone market. Stewart said he had his own issues with Apple, telling Khan that he wanted to have her on the TV show’s companion podcast and “Apple asked us not do it.”“They literally said ‘please don’t talk to her,’” Stewart said. “The Problem with Jon Stewart” ran for two seasons from 2021 to 2023 on Apple TV+.

You Might Not Like What Jon Stewart Has to Tell You
  + stars: | 2024-02-13 | by ( James Poniewozik | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
“Why am I back?” asked Jon Stewart, returning to “The Daily Show” chair as Monday night host after leaving the program in 2015. He was there in part because Comedy Central ended a yearlong search unable to pick a full-time replacement for Trevor Noah. He was there because his Apple TV+ show “The Problem” ended, after Apple discovered that when you hire a famous political comedian, he’ll want to talk about topics that upset people. His timing was so sharp, his comic exasperation so familiar, you’d think he’d been away for a long weekend instead of more than two presidential terms. Now he was back to tell us that the two likely candidates for president are super, super old.

Yet it almost felt that way during Stewart's return to “The Daily Show” Monday night. Neither will that night prove Stewart can regain the position of prominence he stepped away from in August 2015. He moved swiftly into the news, and up-to-date doings of President Joe Biden and his Republican rival. “The Daily Show” even found one where Trump said he couldn't remember talking about how good his memory is. The “campaign” interlude allowed Stewart, and viewers who had drifted away from “The Daily Show” after he left, to become acquainted with unfamiliar cast members.

Welcome back to TV, Jon Stewart. But since Stewart left in 2015, the "Daily Show" audience has gotten very small, and very old. So here, to spell it out, are three charts from Nielsen showing the decline of prime-time TV, the decline of late-night TV, and the fact that the people who still watch conventional TV are … not young. NEW YORK (AP) — As host of “The Daily Show” from 1999 to 2015, Jon Stewart changed comedy — and arguably journalism, too — with sharp, satirical takes on politics and current events. Catching lightning again will be difficult — particularly at a time when late-night television is greatly diminished as a cultural force and others, some from Stewart's family tree, are now competitors. It can be even tougher when, as Salon critic Melanie McFarland put it, the current Jon Stewart is forced to compete with memories of the old Jon Stewart. “Jon Stewart totally changed the face of late-night,” says Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University. “There's something so 2010 about Jon Stewart now,” he says.

The “Saturday Night Live” comedian, featured in the “Weekend Update” segments, was selected by the White House Correspondents’ Association as the entertainer for the press organization’s 2024 dinner, set to take place on April 27. “Colin Jost knows how to make Saturday nights funny, and I am thrilled Colin will be live from the nation’s capital as the headline entertainer for this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner,” said Kelly O’Donnell, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association and NBC News senior White House correspondent. Throughout his career he has nabbed five Writers Guild Awards and two Peabody Awards, in addition to 14 Emmy Awards nominations.
