Speaker Mike Johnson just passed a "clean" government funding bill with mostly Democratic votes. But no one's eager to go through another speaker fight, and the hard right's cutting him some slack. If so, that's because it's essentially the same thing that triggered the end of Kevin McCarthy's speakership in October. But that hasn't been enough to mollify critics on the hard right, including one who described it as "[perpetuating] the very system my constituents sent me here to oppose." And hard right Republicans are at least somewhat optimistic that they can keep that process going, despite the passage of a temporary government funding bill that they philosophically disagree with.

AdvertisementAdvertisementThe conflict between Israel and Hamas has only been raging for 10 days, but Republicans are already preemptively declaring that they oppose accepting Palestinian refugees. "No Gaza refugees in the United States," Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida wrote on Twitter on Monday. Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona claimed on Twitter that Democrats are pushing to "take in a million Palestinian refugees," calling the notion "absurd." AdvertisementAdvertisementDemocrats writ large have not discussed the prospect of accepting refugees from Palestine, aside from some progressive lawmakers. Some Republicans have argued not just that the US doesn't have the capacity for more refugees, but that the Palestinian refugees themselves are undesirable.

Rep. Steve Scalise, the GOP nominee to the next speaker of the House, has a rare blood cancer. "I guess it's the elephant in the room," said Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee, who supports Scalise's speakership bid. Scalise was diagnosed in August with multiple myeloma, a form of cancer that's treatable but not curable, and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. "I will admit it's a concern," said Rep. Keith Self of Texas, who's among the Republicans who have yet to support Scalise. Burchett also suggested that Greene was getting more attention for her remark about Scalise's cancer because she's a woman.

Republicans are still sticking with Twitter, despite the platform's challenges and the "X" rebrand. "He's got a vision that some share, and some don't," Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina said of Musk. But even Mace and Vance don't seem to know what to make of the "X" re-brand. "Seems fine, Twitter seemed fine, don't really care." "I didn't really like Twitter before, I don't really like Twitter now," said Rep. Dan Crenshaw of Texas, who described himself as "exhausted" with the platform.

According to the report, 92% of House Republicans have voted with the Georgia Republican more than 90% of the time.
