Photographer Chelsea Lauren has documented the red carpet scene for the photo agency Shutterstock for nearly a decade. Billed as the celebrity event of the year, with its 900-foot-long red carpet that sweeps down Hollywood Boulevard and into the Dolby Theatre, the Oscars are on another level. There’s a hierarchy to the arrivals — non-famous attendees take a less central route down the red carpet, while the biggest stars arrive last. The next day on the Oscars red carpet, Kaluuya pointed at Lauren and yelled “You’re my G!” “It’s just the little moments like that,” she said. Courtesy Chelsea Lauren/ShutterstockWhile undoubtedly fun, being a red carpet photographer is not all glamour.

When one thinks of Joe Biden, one's first thought probably isn't the phrase "good sex." But that's apparently what keeps the Bidens' marriage going strong. AdvertisementI'm guessing most people didn't think there was much they needed — or wanted — to know about President Joe Biden's sex life, but here we are. Joe and Jill Biden married on June 17, 1977, after Biden proposed to her five times. While the Bidens' sex life might not move the needle for most voters, some Republican figures — like Donald Trump Jr. — certainly are interested in how much "wood" Biden is packing.

Then, suddenly, with only minutes to go until the cutoff, the studio bosses got their answer: SAG-AFTRA, the union that represents the 160,000-some actors, had accepted the deal. Relief among the big four studio chiefs, made up of Disney’s Bob Iger, Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos, and NBCU’s Donna Langley. Relief among the actors, who will finally get back to work. And relief among the other unions and workers who rely on the hum of the Hollywood machine to make ends meet. To get television shows back in January and keep film schedules to where they are, studios will need to quickly restart production.

CNN —Summer is coming to a close, but Hollywood is still stuck in strike Hell. Now, on the precipice of Labor Day Weekend, a deal is nowhere in sight. Schools are starting back up, the weather is cooling, but Hollywood remains enmeshed in a labor dispute for the ages. A failure to strike a deal soon after Labor Day is not a foregone conclusion, by any means. Both the writers and studios do share one common belief: that the strike has gone on too long.

But the unique accounting standards that the industry has long relied on to make those calculations is anything but straightforward. “Hollywood accounting,” as a concept, is so specific to the entertainment business it has its own Wikipedia page. And while experts say this kind of creative accounting is perfectly legal, the tactics involve some of the most fantastical fictions ever devised in Tinseltown. To actually make the movie, the subsidiary inevitably takes on expenses — crew wages, craft services, set design, props etc. That means all of these “creative” expense allocations shouldn’t affect what net profits the studio’s shareholders see.

WASHINGTON — In the 2002 movie “Simone,” Al Pacino plays a director whose star, played by Winona Ryder, walks out on him after saying her trailer on set isn’t grand enough. Simone is a perfect-looking blonde, named after the computer program that crafted her, Simulation One. But Simone is so successful — lavished with Oscars, adored by fans — that she overshadows her director, who becomes jealous and gets rid of her with a computer virus. Be careful what you wish for, Hollywood studios, as you mess with the primal force of A.I. Hollywood’s century-old business model was upended by Covid and also by streaming, which swept in like an occupying army.

Trouble in TinseltownIt’s happening: America’s $134 billion movie and TV industry has ground to a halt after the Hollywood actors’ union voted to strike, joining screenwriters and shutting down virtually all productions. The move reflects the growing aggressiveness of the American labor movement, which has been battling against Starbucks, Amazon, UPS and others. The actors’ union blasted studios for refusing to bend on key issues, including higher payouts from streaming titles and clear limits on the use of artificial intelligence. Shame on them!”The studios argue that the unions’ demands are unrealistic, given the challenges the entertainment industry faces, from streaming to fallout from the pandemic. “This is the worst time in the world to add to that disruption,” Bob Iger, Disney’s C.E.O., said on CNBC yesterday.

BURN IT DOWN: Power, Complicity, and a Call for Change in Hollywood, by Maureen RyanAs I typed this, striking Writers Guild of America members were skipping the picket lines in New York City because of poor air quality, after smoke drifted down from wildfires in Canada. It was a grimly perfect backdrop to read “Burn It Down,” a new book about the pervasive moral shortcomings of Hollywood by the longtime entertainment reporter and critic Maureen Ryan. For the industry Ryan covers is suffering its own kind of climate crisis. Television seasons are shorter — that’s if it’s even relevant to call a collection of episodes that can be binged anytime a “season” anymore. official and private investigator.”Ryan also alludes briefly here, as she has in Variety, to having been the victim of sexual assault by an unnamed television executive.

And perhaps most importantly, the city offers excellent value, in part because it will be the winter/low season there during the Northern Hemisphere’s summer. Although summer is the rainy season, Gellis says showers are often brief and intermittent. NEW YORK, May 2 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Tinseltown scribes are gearing up for a fight. The Writers Guild of America went on strike Tuesday after contract negotiations with entertainment companies broke down. The union backing TV and film writers walked out after failing to reach a new contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for better pay. This meant the distribution chain paid twice, and the double dip meant more money for both the network and writers, who got a share. As the last strike brought about the reality TV fad, which required less creativity, artificial intelligence is threatening to replace writers.

‘Babylon’: Gate of God, Tower of Hubris, City of Sin

Damien Chazelle’s ambitious new film “Babylon,” a tale of Hollywood’s debauched early years, has polarized critics and audiences alike with its raunchy, over-the-top imagery. The title of the movie embraces the depiction of Tinseltown as the height of excess going back to the silent era. As Mr. Chazelle told Entertainment Weekly, “Babylon” was a name given Hollywood in those days to denote “a sinful place, a city of decadence and depravity that was heading to ruin.” The new movie tips its hat to the underground filmmaker Kenneth Anger and his lurid, gossipy 1965 book “Hollywood Babylon.” “Hollywood, California became a synonym of Sin,” Mr. Anger wrote. “Professional do-gooders would brand Hollywood a New Babylon whose evil influence rivaled the legendary depravity of the old.”

As flawed as the people who make them may be, the movies matter. They always have. They always will. No other art form can strike so deeply among a mass of people at the same time. “It’s something even more important than life,” notes a flunky named Manny who rises high in the studio system in “Babylon,” one of the year’s richest and most ambitious films.
