CNN —Twitter turned over at least 32 direct messages from former President Donald Trump’s account – @realDonaldTrump – to special counsel Jack Smith earlier this year as part of the federal election subversion investigation, according to newly unsealed court filings. The unsealed filings shed new light on the extent of the special counsel investigation into Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss. Much of that conduct played out publicly, including on Trump’s Twitter account, where he promoted bogus claims of mass fraud and urged government officials to disrupt certification of the results. At the time of the prosecutors’ court argument to the appeals court, Trump wasn’t charged in federal court in either case. Another court filing unsealed Friday said that the warrant sought information from October 2020 through January 2021.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump will be restricted on how and when he can look at, and talk about, classified information, a judge decided Wednesday after a sealed hearing the day before. The development is one of the first times the court has set terms around classified information in a case where Trump’s team has tried to downplay the seriousness of how records were handled. Cannon held a sealed hearing about the handling of classified information in the case on Tuesday in South Florida, according to multiple sources familiar with the proceeding. But the judge said the SCIF areas would be overseen by a third-party officer from the federal government designated to guide the handling of the classified information in the federal case. Cannon’s order on Wednesday also specifies that apparently classified information in the case that hasn’t clearly been identified as being declassified should be treated with sensitivity.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump is asking Judge Tanya Chutkan to recuse herself from the 2020 election subversion case against him brought by special counsel Jack Smith. Trump, in a new court filing Monday, pointed to comments that Chutkan made in cases involving January 6 US Capitol rioters. “Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President,” Chutkan wrote in that ruling. Trump’s request that she not oversee the criminal case against him is likely an uphill battle, as it was filed with Chutkan herself. Trump also previously sought the removal of the judge overseeing the New York criminal case against him related to hush money payments.

CNN —A federal jury in Washington, DC, has begun deliberating the criminal contempt of Congress charges against former Trump White House trade adviser Peter Navarro. He is the second ex-aide to former President Donald Trump to be prosecuted for his lack of cooperation with the committee. Prosecutors told the jury during closing arguments Thursday that Navarro “made a choice” not to comply with a February 2022 subpoena. Quick moving trial with limited defenseNavarro joined the Trump White House to advise on trade and became a well-known face of the Trump administration, while earning a reputation for sparring behind the scenes with his White House colleagues. Multiple sources of legal trouble for the former Trump aideNavarro’s service as a Trump White House aide has generated continuing legal troubles for the former trade adviser – troubles that go beyond the criminal case.

Trump is scheduled to appear before a magistrate judge on four criminal charges related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. More than 1,000 Trump supporters who participated in the Capitol breach have also gone through the motions of a first appearance hearing that the former president will go through himself. Bill HennessyMetropolitan and US Capitol police officers are regularly seen in the building, often to appear as witnesses. But Chutkan’s sentences for January 6 rioters stand out as notably tough among the district court’s, according to data provided by the Justice Department. The defendant in that case, she remarked, “did not go to the United States Capitol out of any love for our country.

Todd Blanche, Trump’s attorney, resisted the idea of barring all contact with the case’s witnesses, in a back-and-forth with the judge that played out over several rounds. “Many of the people, including the men and women to protect him, may be witnesses in this case,” Blanche said. If the Trump team found the list “inappropriate,” “excessive,” “unwieldly,” or otherwise problematic, they could file a motion with the court, Goodman said. Trump looked through the bond package, a packet of paper, and then gave it Blanche to look through. However, his bond package was discussed and approved, and handed to the table for him to sign.

Miami CNN —Former President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty to 37 charges Tuesday in a brief but historic court appearance following his arrest and processing on federal charges. Trump is the first former president to face federal charges following last week’s indictment by special counsel Jack Smith. It underscored the fact that Trump’s legal turmoil is playing out amid a 2024 Republican primary where Trump’s legal troubles have been a central storyline, both for his campaign and his presidential rivals. We love the people, and you see where they are,” Trump said when asked how his court appearance went. Goodman concluded Tuesday’s hearing acknowledging his limited role in the Trump case.
