The '2023 Reagan National Defense Survey' highlights China as the greatest national security threat to the U.S. and finds strong support for arming Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. Images: Zuma Press/AFP/Getty Images Composite: Mark KellyThe press is reporting that Thursday’s U.S.-British strikes against the Houthis in Yemen risk escalating the current conflict in the Middle East. The conflict was already escalating. The question has been whether the U.S. and its allies would respond to Houthi efforts, backed by Iran, to hijack commercial shipping and shoot at the U.S. Navy. The Houthis have been using these weapons depots, radars and launch sites to “endanger freedom of navigation in one of the world’s most vital waterways,” as the White House said in a statement.

The S&P 500 has slid about 5% since reaching its late-July high, but so far this month the benchmark index has rebounded. In 12 of those times the S&P 500 was higher six months later, Turnquist said. Reuters GraphicsStocks have tended to perform well at year end -- with November and December logging the second and third-biggest average S&P 500 monthly gains -- though this year the trends may portend even more favorably. That was followed by a 28% rally in the S&P 500 through late July of this year. Further, notes Delwiche, stock market breadth has been weak.

Economic data tells half-truth

WASHINGTON, Jan 26 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The best measure for tracking how much value an entire economy puts out, arguably, is gross domestic product. But for those trying to parse through Thursday’s U.S. GDP reading, published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the devil is in the details. The trouble is that economic growth was largely fueled by companies, not people, which reflects the real heartbeat of the economy. Strip out that and other inconsistent segments, and the U.S. economy grew at just a 0.2% annualized pace in the fourth quarter, the smallest jump since early 2020. They do not reflect the views of Reuters News, which, under the Trust Principles, is committed to integrity, independence, and freedom from bias.
Nov 11 (Reuters) - Sterling edged higher against a weakening dollar on Friday after British economic data came in stronger than expected. "UK GDP monthly and quarterly data early this morning are helping GBP-USD hold the line at around 1.17," Unicredit analysts said. Investors poured into risky assets after Thursday’s U.S. inflation data, sending the dollar tumbling and U.S. Treasury yields to a five-week low. Sunak suggested a squeeze on public spending and potentially higher taxes in a move that could further weaken the economy. Investors are also waiting for jobs data due next week, which might provide further cues about potential inflation second-round effects.
Near the conclusion of Thursday’s U.S. House hearing into the events of Jan. 6, 2021, the committee voted unanimously to subpoena former President Donald Trump. In a letter Friday morning to the committee, Trump didn’t say whether he planned to comply in this case. The Jan. 6 committee is a select committee, not a standing committee or subcommittee of the House. When it comes to the Jan. 6 committee specifically, Trump has pushed former aides from his inner circle to take his approach. Even when the Justice Department does act, that doesn’t always guarantee the result.
