Although originally prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes (Ozempic and Mounjaro), semaglutide and tirzepatide are becoming more and more popular for weight loss. If you are noticing an effect on your mood while using a GLP-1 medication, here’s what might be at play. Antidepressant effectsFor some, using a GLP-1 medication might relieve some anxiety or depression symptoms, Arillotta said. “I think you were trying to roast me, but this is actually fact — I do have a BMI of 30. Critics say the term BMI has become a societal judgment by lumping individuals into arbitrary categories that perpetuate misconceptions about body weight. “She could easily say, ‘I am in perfectly good health, so just take your BMI of 25 and shove it.’”That’s exactly the scenario facing Maher. By comparison, a group of people who also dieted and exercised, but then received dummy shots, lost weight initially but then regained some, researchers reported Sunday in the journal Nature Medicine. Participants in both groups lost about 7% of their body weight, or almost 17 pounds (8 kilograms), during the diet-and-exercise phase. Those who received the drug went on to lose an additional 18.4% of initial body weight, or about 44 pounds (20 kilograms) more, on average. Nearly 29% of those taking the drug lost at least a quarter of their body weight, compared with just over 1% of those taking placebo. Side effects including nausea, diarrhea and constipation were reported more frequently in people taking the drug than those taking the placebo.

Short for body mass Index, BMI is nothing more than a crude measurement of a person’s body fat based on height and weight. Yet critics say the term BMI has become a societal judgment by lumping individuals into arbitrary categories that perpetuate misconceptions about body weight. “Yet it has become completely medicalized that health equals weight, weight equals health based on BMI. Conversely, BMI can underestimate body fat in older adults and anyone who has lost muscle, according to the Harvard T.H. More conundrums: Women naturally have more body fat and less muscle mass than men, while some racial and ethnic groups are genetically predisposed to carry more or less lean muscle mass and body fat.
