New York CNN —Starbucks said Tuesday it will begin talks with the Workers United union to discuss bargaining agreements and union organizing. Starbucks also said it is using the framework to begin to resolve litigation related to partner benefits announced in May 2022 and the use of the Starbucks brand in an intellectual property lawsuit. “As a sign of good faith, Starbucks has agreed to provide partners represented by Workers United with the May 2022 benefits, including credit card tipping,” the statement said. In November, thousands of Starbucks workers at hundreds of stores went on strike, protesting the lack of their first contract despite a nearly two-year organizing drive. Since the first location voted to unionize in December 2021, Starbucks has fought aggressively against the union drive.

Workers at several Starbucks stores had walked off their jobs last week in a strike organized by the Workers United union during a key promotional event demanding improved staffing and schedules. It is affiliated to Service Employees International Union, which owns a small Starbucks stake and is part of the Strategic Organizing Center, the Wall Street Journal reported. The WSJ first reported about the Strategic Organizing Center's push for board seats.

The walkout comes on the coffee chain's Red Cup Day event, during which Starbucks hands out free red-colored, reusable, holiday-themed cups to customers on their coffee purchases. About a dozen workers picketed outside Starbucks' Astor Place outlet at the New York University's campus chanting "no contract, no coffee" and other rhymes. Red Cup day has typically been a major driver of store traffic, with Placer.ai data showing that visits to U.S. Starbucks stores on the day last year jumped 94% over the daily average for the full year. Mary Boca, 22, Astor Place, New York barista, said she wants to see higher pay and more staff at Starbucks. Last year, workers at more than 100 U.S. company-owned Starbucks locations had held a one-day strike on Red Cup day.

Starbucks is increasing pay and benefits for most of its U.S. hourly workers after ending its fiscal year with record sales. At least 366 U.S. Starbucks stores have voted to unionize since 2021, according to the National Labor Relations Board. But Starbucks and the Workers United union have yet to reach a labor agreement at any of those stores. The company said program also won't be available to employees at unionized stores since it involves prize money and travel. Starbucks has appealed that ruling, saying NLRB’s standards don’t allow employers to make unilateral changes in the wages or benefits of unionized employees.
