CNN —Teenage soccer sensation Arda Güler, 19, produced a moment of magic to help Turkey beat Georgia 3-1 in an entertaining Group F game at Euro 2024 on Tuesday. The 65th-minute strike sparked frenzied scenes inside the Signal Iduna Park, with thousands of Turkey fans celebrating arguably the goal of the tournament so far. It was a devastating blow for Georgia, though, which is making its debut at a major soccer tournament. Despite being the lowest ranked team at Euro 2024, its players can count themselves unlucky having pushed Turkey all the way in its opening group stage match. But as the rain poured down onto the exhausted players, it was Turkey celebrating at full-time after a breathtaking match came to an end.

Another day at Euro 2024, another trio of goalscoring games — even if the entertainment factor dipped off at points. The Netherlands overcame Poland with a 2-1 win, Denmark were held to a 1-1 draw by Slovenia, while England beat Serbia 1-0. But the goals, a lack of shots in one game and the results don’t tell the whole story of the day. BRUSSELS, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Belgium's stand-in captain Romelu Lukaku said he would welcome Thibaut Courtois back into the national team with open arms after the goalkeeper walked out of the squad in June. Courtois tore knee ligaments and underwent surgery in August, delaying any resolution, but earlier this week Belgium fullback Timothy Castagne said he did not think Courtois could return to the squad without any explanation. “The day Thibaut decides to return, he will simply return. You know, I would like to call on the media not to constantly write that Thibaut Courtois or any other player said this or did that. Lukaku was chosen ahead of Courtois as captain in June, standing in for the injured Kevin De Bruyne.

MADRID, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Spanish police arrested on Thursday three Real Madrid youth players for allegedly distributing a sexual video featuring a minor, with the arrests heightening the furore about sexism and macho behaviour in Spanish soccer. The case stems from a complaint filed by the mother of a 16-year-old girl in the Canary Islands regarding an alleged recording of sexual relations, police said. Police said the three had been detained at the Real Madrid sports complex in Madrid and a fourth player was being investigated. One of those arrested is a reserve team player and two play for the third team. Real Madrid issued a statement saying only that a total of four youth team players had been questioned by police "in connection with a complaint about an alleged release of a private video via WhatsApp" messaging system.

That professionalisation has underpinned the success of the ninth Women's World Cup, which ended on Sunday with Spain beating England by a single goal in a final that pitted the two European countries with the strongest domestic leagues against each other. Spain lifts its first international trophy for 11 years after beating Croatia. Carvajal’s goal sent the Spanish fans into a frenzy, as they celebrated the team’s first international trophy since it won the European Championships in 2012. Rubiales and his Brazilian FA (CBF) counterpart, Ednaldo Rodrigues, met in Madrid to launch their joint movement to combat racism under the slogan "One skin". "It is important to understand that harder punishment needs to be applied in cases of racism by the football authorities," Rodrigues told a news conference. "We need to lead a campaign worldwide to fight against this virus that ashame everyone in football." Last month, the CBF also launched a national campaign against racism in Brazilian league matches with the slogan "There is no game with racism". "There is no place for racist insults in our football," Rubiales said.

MADRID, May 22 (Reuters) - Spanish soccer has a racism problem, football federation chief Luis Rubiales said on Monday, after Real Madrid lodged a complaint following alleged insults hurled at their Brazilian star Vinicius Jr. It is "a serious problem that also stains an entire team, an entire fan base, an entire club, an entire country." "Probably Vinicius is more right than we think and we all need to do more about racism," Rubiales said. Real Madrid said on Monday they have lodged a hate crime complaint following the incident in Valencia. It is the 10th episode of alleged racism against Vinicius that has been reported to prosecutors this season, according to LaLiga.
Vinícius Júnior has had enough. This time, he took aim not only at his abusers but Spain itself. “It wasn’t the first time, nor the second, nor the third,” Vinícius Júnior wrote in a post on his Twitter and Instagram accounts. “Racism is normal in La Liga. The competition thinks it’s normal, the federation does too and the opponents encourage it.” Spain itself, he said, was becoming known in his native Brazil “as a country of racists.”On Sunday, Vinícius Júnior was met by fans chanting the word “mono” — monkey — even before he stepped off the Real Madrid bus outside the Mestalla stadium in Valencia.
CNN —Vinícius Jr., Real Madrid’s Brazilian forward, was subjected to racist chanting during his team’s defeat to Valencia at the Mestalla Stadium in Spain’s La Liga, according to club manager Carlo Ancelotti. Vinícius Jr. was sent off in the final minutes of the game for his involvement in an altercation with Valencia player Hugo Duro. ‘This isn’t football, this is @LaLiga’”The Real Madrid player then posted a longer statement on his Twitter. “Valencia CF wishes to publicly condemn any type of insult, attack or downgrading in football,” it reads. “Valencia CF can’t tolerate someone accusing our fans of being racist, we strongly reject Ancelotti’s comments,” the post said.
CNN —Even before the full-time whistle blew in Manchester City’s 4-0 mauling in the Champions League semifinal Wednesday, Real Madrid players looked to have accepted their fate. To see a club like Real Madrid get put to the sword is always a surprise, but it’s even more shocking when you consider it was this team – in this competition. Luka Modrić has been one of the best players in the world during his time at Real Madrid. In truth, the chastening defeat against Manchester City has only amplified what madridistas already knew. Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti looked on as his side lost 4-0 on Wednesday.
It has been updated to reflect the persistent racist abuse that Vinicius Jr. was subjected to during Real Madrid’s 1-0 defeat by Valencia on May 21, 2023. ‘Racist campaign against Vinícius’Incidents of players being racially abused by fans have tarred numerous LaLiga matches this season. On May 21, Vinícius was again subjected to racist abuse from the stands, this time during Real’s match against Valencia at the Mestalla stadium. Most cases of racist abuse which LaLiga has referred to local prosecutors have involved Vinícius. The local prosecutor in Mallorca said it is investigating a number of cases of racist abuse at matches.
