A hurricane watch and warnings of storm surges up to 15 feet high were issued Tuesday for almost all of Florida's western coastline as a potential tropical storm moves across the Caribbean Sea and towards the Gulf Coast. The hurricane watch extends from Indian Pass in north-west Florida near Panama City, down to Englewood, and includes Tampa Bay. Hurricane and tropical storm watches are now in effect for the entire western coast of the Sunshine State. A hurricane watch means that hurricane conditions are possible, and is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated onslaught of tropical-storm-force winds and conditions. Outside of the U.S., a hurricane watch is also in effect for parts of eastern Mexico from Cabo Catoche to Tulum and Pinar del Río in Cuba.

Two reports released Monday provide a mixed but compelling outlook on the wave of book removals and challenges as the annual Banned Books Week begins for schools, stores and libraries nationwide. The ALA attributed the decline in book challenges in the first eight months of 2024, in part, to the work of anti-censorship activists and “success in courts” against laws that restrict book access. “But, you know, the First Amendment protects the rights of minors as well.”While the ALA’s report shows signs of book challenges abating, objections to certain titles still persist. Found Golf Balls CEO Shaun Shienfield, whose company recovers and resells millions of lost balls across the US and Canada each year, told CNN that he gauged the average to be between three and four each round. Using Shienfield’s low estimate, that’s over 1.5 billion balls lost in the US every year since 2020. “While precise global estimates are challenging … the worldwide figure could easily exceed 3 to 5 billion golf balls lost each year,” Petersen told CNN. Mitchell Schols, founder of Canada-based Biodegradable Golf Balls, put a “very conservative” estimate for North America at one million balls lost to oceans annually. The annual Florida Python Challenge has slithered to its conclusion, with professionally-categorized python purger Ronald Kiger crowned its victor after removing 20 Burmese pythons from the Florida Everglades. The commission revealed 195 Burmese pythons were successfully removed from the wild during the challenge. The hunt is designed to bring awareness to the invasive threat of the Burmese python species in Florida. These snakes are found primarily in and around the Everglades ecosystem in South Florida, where they prey on birds, mammals and other reptiles. Burmese pythons can spread diseases amongst native animals, affect native snakes and have high mercury levels that are dangerous for human consumption.

CNN —A woman has died following a shark attack in the Atlantic Ocean near the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa. She was transferred by helicopter to a hospital on the Canary island of Gran Canaria, where she died, the spokesperson added. The woman suffered a heart attack after losing her leg, according to local media reports confirmed to CNN by Sasemar. Shark attacks near the Canary Islands are rare, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History’s International Shark Attack File, with only six confirmed incidents on record. The Canary Islands have long been a popular holiday destination, thanks to their temperate year-round climate.

Days after returning to Earth, the four civilian crew members of the Polaris Dawn mission opened up about their experience seeing the planet from orbit, floating in weightlessness and conducting the world’s first all-civilian spacewalk. “The perfection of what you’re looking at is just awe-inspiring,” Poteet said, recalling the views of sunrises and sunsets out the window of their SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule. The crew spent two-and-a-half years training for the Polaris Dawn mission, which included choreographing and rehearsing each step of the spacewalk. (The crew members also raised money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital during their time in orbit.) He said the larger goal for both SpaceX and the Polaris program is to eventually make humans a multiplanetary species.

Ron DeSantis’ administration is once again advising against the mRNA vaccines: this time in the most vulnerable residents. In updated guidance for health care providers released Thursday, the Florida Health Department and state Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo questioned the safety and effectiveness of the mRNA Covid vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, including for older adults and people with underlying health problems. Dr. Paul Offit, a vaccine expert at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said the Florida surgeon general's guidance is unnecessarily alarming people about the Covid vaccines. "The mRNA vaccines are remarkably safe," he added. The CDC currently recommends everyone ages 6 months and older get an updated Covid vaccine this fall from any of the three options.

A fourth ape has died from a shigella infection that has been plaguing animals at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens for weeks, the Florida zoo announced on Facebook this week. Kevin, a 3-year-old western lowland gorilla, "succumbed to the illness," the zoo said. "He fought very hard against the infection, showing signs of recovery at times," the zoo said. It added that the infection typically spreads through feces, food and water and can be more severe in the ape population. Kevin was born in April 2021 at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens to father Lash and mother Madini, the zoo said.

New York CNN —Fast casual chain BurgerFi filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Wednesday after months of reporting financial distress. BurgerFi, filing for bankruptcy protection in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, said all of its corporate locations will operate normally. Franchise-owned locations are exempt from the bankruptcy filing, the company said in a press release. A common route is Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which allows the company to solve its financial problems through reorganization. According to the bankruptcy filing Wednesday, BurgerFi estimates it had between $100 million and $500 million in liabilities, but only $50 million to $100 million in assets.
