Low-cost carrier Ryanair on Monday reported its best-ever annual profit, as passenger and revenue growth offset sharply higher operating costs. The Dublin-based firm said full-year profit after tax jumped 34% to 1.92 billion euros ($2.09 billion), and announced a 700-million-euro share buyback program. Revenue rose 25% year-on-year to 13.44 billion euros as the airline served 184 million passengers, 23% more than before the Covid pandemic. Ryanair Chief Financial Officer Neil Sorahan told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe" Monday that its share buyback reflected a "very strong" balance sheet. "Our priorities have been very much: restore the pay for our people after Covid, bring in pay increases, pay down the debt," he said.

ValueAct Capital on Wednesday unveiled a stake in Flutter Entertainment , the Dublin-based parent company of sports betting firm Fanduel. It is possible that ValueAct previously had some other exposure to Flutter. The hedge fund previously had a position in The Stars Group, which was acquired by Flutter in 2020. While the ValueAct stake in Flutter is small, Gordon Haskett analyst Don Bilson pointed out in a note to clients that UBS also reported a stake in the gaming company. UBS has previously worked with ValueAct to build stakes in individual stocks for the hedge fund, Bilson said.

Less than a week after two public sculptures featuring a livestream between Dublin, Ireland, and New York City debuted, “inappropriate behavior” in real-time interactions between people in the two cities has prompted a temporary shutdown. The creators of the sculptures are now “investigating possible technical solutions to inappropriate behaviour by a small minority of people in front of the Portal,” according to a statement from the Dublin City Council. “Dublin City Council had hoped to have a solution in place today, but unfortunately the preferred solution, which would have involved blurring, was not satisfactory,” the City Council said late Tuesday. The Dublin-New York city pairing isn’t the first real-time bridge between cities through these sculptures. The first Portals, according to the organization’s website, linked Vilnius, Lithuania, with Lublin, Poland, in 2021.

Shareholders have since voted to making the NYSE the primary listing for the stock rather than London, and that change is slated to take effect May 31. UBS analyst Ben Shelley said in a May 9 note to clients that the primary listing change could help close those gaps. Flutter is not the only company in recent years to shift its primary listing to the U.S., and the track records of those companies could be a positive sign for Flutter. UBS pointed to building materials companies CRH — which transitioned its primary listing to the NYSE in September 2023 — and Ferguson — which made the switch in May 2022 — as examples.

CNN —A new interactive art installation in New York City is allowing viewers to communicate with people 3,000 miles away in Dublin, Ireland. The brainchild of Lithuanian artist Benediktas Gylys, “the Portal” was unveiled on Wednesday and allows people on either side of the Atlantic to interact with each other via a video link. The idea was “conceived as a testament to the power of art to transcend physical barriers,” reads the press release from Gylys and officials from New York City and Dublin. The Dublin portal will also connect with other installations in Lithuania and Poland from July onwards, said de Róiste in the statement. This is not the first time that an artist has brought New Yorkers closer to people across the Atlantic.

Ryanair has returned money to investors in the past, but never on a regular basis. Between 2008 and 2020, the group paid out €6.74 billion ($7.2 billion) to shareholders via buybacks and ad hoc dividend payments, according to a spokesperson. Less competition has allowed the airline to increase ticket prices, which soared 24% on average, offsetting significantly higher fuel costs. That would be up from its previous record of €1.45 billion ($1.6 billion) earned in 2018, before the Covid-19 pandemic. Ryanair agreed to buy up to 300 Boeing 737-10 planes earlier this year in a deal worth $40 billion.

CNN —The biggest-ever drug seizure in the history of Ireland was intercepted off the coast of Cork in the southeast of the country on Tuesday, Irish police said. “It is the largest drug seizure in the history of the State,” Justin Kelly, Assistant Commissioner of An Garda Síochána, Ireland’s police force, said at the same conference. Three men, aged 31, 50 and 60, have been arrested on suspicion of organized crime and are currently being questioned at Garda stations in County Wexford, according to a Garda press release. Officers said the drugs originated from South America and were bound for crime groups in Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Europe. Assistant Commissioner Justin Kelly said the drug seizure was the largest in Ireland's history.

The Irish airline, Europe's largest by passenger numbers, cited Dublin Airport Authority's increased passenger charges and a failure to deliver a "meaningful" environmental incentive scheme as motivation for the decision. The Dublin Airport Authority said in a statement that Ryanair was exaggerating the size of increased charges and that the authority was consulting with airlines about a proposed scheme to incentivise lower-emission aircraft in 2024. It said Dublin Airport's passenger numbers had recovered to pre-pandemic levels and that it had no need to incentivise new growth given a capacity limit under the airport's planning permission. Ryanair frequently cuts capacity from airports during disputes over charges and typically allocates aircraft to airports and regions offering the best growth incentives.
