CNN —When the Philadelphia Phillies won the National League (NL) East for the fifth year in a row in 2011, they probably did not expect to have to wait too much longer for their next division title. Fast-forward to Monday night and the Phillies have clinched their first NL East crown in 13 years with a 6-2 win over the Chicago Cubs at Citizens Bank Park. Only the Los Angeles Dodgers (93-63) have a better record in MLB this season than the Phillies (93-64). “This is what you work for all year,” two-time NL MVP Bryce Harper told NBC Sports Philadelphia from a raucous locker room. CNN —Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani stole his 49th base of the season on Wednesday night to move to within one steal and two home runs of an unprecedented 50-50 season. “I was hoping for a bad throw because a good throw gets him,” said Roberts after the game, according to MLB.com. Ohtani is also just one home run away from matching the Dodgers franchise record of 49, set by Shawn Green in 2001. Once Knack was replaced with Dodgers debutant Zach Logue, the Marlins struck back with three runs in the fifth. Ten regular season games remain for Ohtani to reach the unprecedented 50-50 mark, and the Dodgers can confirm their ticket to the postseason with a win against the Marlins on Thursday night.

CNN —Shohei Ohtani made yet more baseball history on Sunday, becoming the first player in 130 years to record 85 extra-base hits (XBH) and 45 steals in a single season. In doing so, the two-time AL MVP joined Hugh Duffy as the only other player ever to accomplish the feat. The Japanese star is now just two away from equaling the Dodgers franchise record of 49 homers hit by Shawn Green in 2001. “For him to hit the ball 118 mph at that degree, it’s usually a double,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, according to MLB.com. But the Dodgers roared back in the bottom of the first with five runs, immediately turning the game on its head. After two outs, Tommy Edman continued his impressive form with a two-run homer to left field to give the Dodgers the lead. Investors can still bank on a share-boosting sale of Atlanta Braves Holdings , according to Rosenblatt Securities. In a report out on Wednesday, Rosenblatt analyst Barton Crockett brushed off remarks from Liberty Media chairman John Malone late last week that the Braves were "not for sale." Liberty Media owns 17% of the Braves' Series C non-voting shares that trade under ticker symbol BATRK, Malone another 6% and Braves and Liberty Media CEO Gregory Maffei some 2.25%, according to FacSet data. SEATTLE (AP) — The Atlanta Braves acquired outfielder Jarred Kelenic, pitcher Marco Gonzales and infielder Evan White from the Seattle Mariners on Sunday night for right-handed pitchers Cole Phillips and Jackson Kowar. The move added a veteran lefty to the Braves pitching staff, along with Kelenic, who at one time was one of baseball's top young prospect. In the process, Seattle cleared a chunk of salary off its payroll, giving up on Kelenic in order for the Braves to take the contracts of Gonzales and White. Gonzales is owed $12 million for the 2024 season, while White has $17 million in guaranteed money remaining on his contract. Gonzales pitched in only 10 games last season before undergoing surgery to relieve pressure on a nerve in his left arm.

NEW YORK (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr. was a unanimous winner of his first National League Most Valuable Player award on Thursday after becoming the first big leaguer with 40 homers and 70 stolen bases in a season. Los Angeles Angels two-way star Shohei Otani won the American League honor, becoming the first two-time unanimous MVP. Mookie Betts received all 30 second-place votes and 270 points, followed by Los Angeles Dodgers teammate Freddie Freeman with 227 points. Betts earned the 2018 AL MVP award with Boston and Freeman was the 2020 NL MVP with the Dodgers. Betts batted .307 with 39 homers and 107 RBIs, and Freeman hit .331 with 29 homers and 102 RBIs.
