A GOP lawmaker behind the legislation said the "bold" and "forward-thinking" measure will help Texas focus on the "strength of diversity." Creighton's office did not immediately respond when asked how the law will focus schools on "the strength of diversity." It mandates that beginning in January, all state-funded universities must shut down their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) offices, mandatory DEI statements, and diversity training. Any public college or university that doesn't shut down those offices loses its access to state funds, according to the law.
