Ford to add more Tesla EV chargers to its network

Oct 30 (Reuters) - Ford Motor (F.N) said on Monday it would add more of Tesla's Superchargers to its electric-vehicle charging network, higher than previously forecast, as automakers tap into the EV leader's sprawling charger network to expand the range of their cars. Ford will now add over 15,000 of Tesla's Superchargers to its network, up from its earlier projection of 12,000 chargers. These three providers would bring more than 10,000 new chargers to the network, including more than 550 new DC fast chargers. BlueOval combines multiple charging networks to provide access to the largest North American public charging network offered by automotive manufacturers. The development comes months after Ford struck a deal with Tesla to allow EV owners gain access to the biggest network of high-speed Superchargers in the United States in early 2024.

July 19 (Reuters) - Nissan (7201.T) on Wednesday became the first Japanese automaker to agree to adopt Tesla's (TSLA.O) electric-vehicle charging technology in the U.S. and Canada, joining global peers in expanding their fast-charger network to boost EV adoption. Starting in 2025, Nissan will equip its EVs with the Tesla-developed North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, as it targets 40% of U.S. vehicle sales to be fully electric by 2030, the company said. The White House has said electric-vehicle charging stations using Tesla-standard plugs would be eligible for billions of dollars in federal subsidies as long as they included the U.S. charging standard connection, CCS, as well. From 2024, Nissan will provide NACS charging adapters with its Ariya EV models currently equipped with CCS to enable them to charge on Tesla's Supercharger network. June 27 (Reuters) - Swedish carmaker Volvo Cars (VOLCARb.ST) said on Tuesday it had signed an agreement with Tesla (TSLA.O) to give its electric vehicles (EVs) access to the EV maker's Supercharger network in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The deal makes Volvo the first European automaker to adopt Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS), adding to the slew of EV makers and charging equipment manufacturers taking up the technology. Tesla's Superchargers account for about 60% of the total fast chargers available in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Its recent deals represent major strides in displacing rival standard CCS that earlier exclusively had the backing of President Joe Biden's administration. The government is offering $7.5 billion in funding to speed the deployment of EV chargers in the United States.

Volvo will add the locations of Tesla charging stations to its proprietary app at the same time. Most non-Tesla EVs and charging stations in the U.S. use a rival plug design, the public-domain Combined Charging System standard. Tesla's NACS charging plug design was proprietary until late last year, when Tesla published the technical details of its system and said anyone could adopt the standard. Several studies have found that CCS charging networks have much lower reliability than Tesla's network. In addition, the CCS fast-charging plug is larger and heavier than Tesla's NACS plug, making it cumbersome for older or disabled drivers to use.

Tesla's Superchargers make up about 60% of available U.S. fast chargers and Ford (F.N) and General Motors (GM.N) have in recent weeks struck deals with Tesla to use its charging technology, now dubbed the North American Charging Standard (NACS). Jaehoon Chang, who is also Hyundai's president, said the company would consider joining the alliance of automakers shifting to Tesla's standard, but that it would have to determine that was in the interest of its customers. One issue, he said, is that Tesla's current network of Superchargers does not allow for the faster charging Hyundai's electric vehicles can achieve on other chargers. Hyundai's new electric cars, including the Ioniq 5, use an 800-volt electrical architecture to allow for faster charging, while Tesla's Superchargers operate at a lower voltage.

Tesla is slowly opening many of its charging stations to vehicles of other automakers. Ford and GM recently said their cars will be able to use Tesla Superchargers. It looks like Tesla's Superchargers are going to win out after all. Tesla's NACS will now compete with two other main charging port types: CCS and CHAdeMO, which companies like Tritium and EVgo also offer. Tesla only recently switched to the name "North American Charging Standard" recently, a move that appears to have paid off.

The White House said on Friday that EV charging stations that offer Tesla plugs would be eligible for billions of dollars in federal subsidies as long as they included CCS connectivity. The White House aims to spur deployment of hundreds of thousands of chargers, which it sees as integral to EV adoption. The person, who now works for a charging company, is not authorized to speak to the media and declined to be named. The company that is developing CCS chargers, is "reviewing" its strategy because of the Tesla-GM deal. Logvinov, who is also chief executive of EV charging parts supplier IoTecha, said CCS was worth backing because it had worked for more than a decade with multiple vendors.

Most other EVs and charging stations in the U.S. use the public domain Combined Charging System (CCS) plug standard. Currently, Tesla EVs can use CCS chargers with an adapter, but only Teslas can use NACS chargers. An August 2022 study by JD Power found similar results for CCS chargers in other parts of the country. Notably, it also found Tesla's charging network to be much more reliable. Potential buyers of a Ford or GM EV might like what they experience on a test drive, but without a reliable charging network, both have been at a disadvantage to Tesla.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg praised the Ford-Tesla deal, but told CNBC that the Biden administration would not dictate an EV charging standard.
