In a 2023 Pew survey on teen internet use, only about one-third of US teens ages 13 to 17 said they used Facebook. Compare that with Pew's 2014 survey, when 71% of teens said they used Facebook. AdvertisementSecondly, Facebook is hoping to lure back young adults with offerings like Marketplace, Dating, Groups, and Events. And I don't think Facebook Dating is a huge hit. I know it seems improbable that Facebook could become cool for Gen Z, but don't count it out — they just might pull this off.

CNN —New York could soon become the first state to pass a law restricting social media platforms from using algorithms to promote content to minors. Kathy Hochul and state lawmakers are nearing a legislative deal on the proposal, according to a person familiar with the matter. That could mean significant changes to how kids in New York interact with social media apps and would make algorithmically generated content feeds an opt-in experience requiring parental consent. A tentative deal on the social media bill was earlier reported by The Wall Street Journal. “We’re not banning young people from social media,” Hochul said in an interview on NPR Monday.

A new study has possibly captured that objectively, finding that for teens diagnosed with internet addiction, signaling between brain regions important for controlling attention, working memory and more was disrupted. Specifically, internet ‘addiction,’ which was initially conjured up by (psychiatrist) Ivan K. Goldberg in 1995 as a joke. Das wasn’t involved in the study. “Overall, the mechanisms underlying internet addiction are more like an emerging pattern than a finished picture,” Chang said. “Similar to substance and gambling disorders, internet addiction rewires the brain, making it harder to resist internet related stimuli,” he added.

Cleopatra Coleman began with red, swirling it toward pink with a fine-tipped brush. An oval appeared on the paper, and then smaller marks joined it — ears, eyebrows, a line for a nose. “I always draw this woman,” Coleman said. “I don’t know why.”This was on a bright May morning and Coleman, a star of the FX limited series “Clipped,” premiering Tuesday on Hulu, was at Happy Medium, an art cafe around the corner from her temporary apartment in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. So this morning, on a day off from filming a new series, “Black Rabbit,” she had taken herself on a date.

The evidence is overwhelming that physical activity is good for both our bodies and our brains. By one estimate, we're getting 27 fewer minutes of physical activity on average each day than we did 200 years ago. For kids, who need even more physical activity, the decline is stark. A 2022 Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth gave the US a D- score, concluding that America, while never sufficiently supportive of physical activity, had become even worse at making the space and time for it. I'd forgotten that exercise, while not a cure for my mental illness, was a necessary precursor to my mental wellness.

New York CNN —A new Utah lawsuit accuses TikTok of enabling the sexual exploitation of children through its livestreaming feature. TikTok live allows users to post live videos to the platform, where they can interact with viewers and respond to comments in real time. It also claims that TikTok has insufficient age verification and enforcement measures to ensure the app is being used safely. TikTok has repeatedly pushed back on claims that it is harmful to children’s wellbeing, saying it supports young users with various tools such as automatic time limits. The new Utah lawsuit, which is heavily redacted, claims TikTok has been aware of the misuse of its live feature but has failed to take adequate steps to address the issue.

It's difficult to compare public school systems forensically because of the countries' vastly different populations and government infrastructures. However, feedback from my British friends has convinced me that the setup in the UK is more user-friendly for kids and parents. Kids in the UK start school as young as 4By law, children in the UK enter the publicly-funded British school system as young as 4. Kids wear uniformMost government-run schools in the UK require students to wear a school uniform. The protocols contrast those in the US, where most public school kids can wear what they want to class — albeit within reason.

There, she inadvertently stumbles onto a decades-old mystery involving her first husband, who died while test-piloting an airplane. Maisie’s life will be forever changed by what she discovers: “Truth had at last come to the surface, had eased itself from the boundaries of the past as if it were a splinter rising up through skin.” Winspear gives Maisie the grace to face her pain, and wraps up the series with a deft touch.

Haidt describes exactly what parents fear: that social media and phone use are contributing to the malaise of young adults. The idea that phones are bad for younger teens has hit a crescendo — and parents are taking action. The teens have been told that phones are bad for teens, so they've convinced themselves that their friends who had phones earlier are now addicted and worse off. But there's also pushback on the overall idea that scientific evidence points to social media and phones being bad for teens' mental health. And yet, even if academic studies are lacking, it is really hard to ignore common sense about teens and phones.

I lost my hair. Then I found myself.

For more than a year, I had been dealing with my progressive hair loss and clamoring for some sort of control. I launched into the story of my hair loss journey, attempting to convey the stress and uncertainty that had defined the past year. I purchased a long brown human hair wig that initially looked natural in the shop lighting. I learned I had a lot to learn; there was a whole "wearing hair" subculture with special lingo that I knew nothing about. I accepted that I have hair loss and I'm aging, and one day, I'll look in the mirror, and it won't be just my hair that's changed.
