Theodore Roosevelt’s favorite pocket watch, which he carried around the world and wore in the White House, was returned Thursday to the president’s former home on Long Island decades after it was stolen from a mansion in Buffalo. The watch itself is “fairly pedestrian,” with an “inexpensive coin silver case,” the F.B.I. It was a present from Roosevelt’s sister, Corinne Roosevelt Robinson, and he cherished it. “You could not have given me a more useful present than the watch; it was exactly what I wished,” he wrote in a letter to her. Tweed Roosevelt, Teddy’s great-grandson, learned about the watch this Tuesday, when the Park Service contacted him about its recovery, he said.

O’KEEFE: “The Loves of Theodore Roosevelt” argues that the most masculine president in the American memory is actually the product of unsung and extraordinary women. Theodore Roosevelt with his second wife, Edith Carow Roosevelt, and his first five children in the mid-1890s. I had this fascinating conversation with Connie Roosevelt, who is the wife of Theodore Roosevelt IV (Teddy’s great-grandson). I love Robin Williams and the depiction in “Night at the Museum,” but that’s a cartoon of Theodore Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt, like his distant cousin Franklin Roosevelt, was considered a traitor to his class.

“People need each other for support beyond the immediate staples of life,” Ma says. “They need music.”Do you think music is fundamentally good? Think about language, think about agriculture, think about navigation, think about engineering. I’m using culture.” It doesn’t need to be defined as “I’m going to play for you this piece of music.” It’s not that.
