WASHINGTON—A pair of lawmakers has formed a working group in Congress to bolster U.S. government efforts to aid Americans held hostage or unlawfully detained abroad. Set to launch Thursday, the Congressional Task Force on American Hostages and Americans Wrongfully Detained Abroad aims to assist the families of Americans held hostage or wrongfully detained, to provide resources for fellow lawmakers, and to communicate with the administration on the issue. It is led by Reps. French Hill (R., Ark.) The congressmen expect more colleagues to join the task force, which is meant to formalize existing work among members, following its launch Thursday. Mr. Deutch co-sponsored legislation passed last year intended to strengthen U.S. efforts to return Americans held abroad.

WASHINGTON — A dozen House Democrats publicly criticized their colleague Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., late Wednesday, accusing her of giving "cover" to terrorist and suggesting her remarks about Hamas and the Taliban reflect a "deep-seated prejudice." “Equating the United States and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban is as offensive as it is misguided,” the group, led by Rep. Brad Schneider, of Illinois, said in a statement, urging Omar to "clarify" her remarks. Omar responded to her critics by calling their statement "offensive" and defending her initial remarks. We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the U.S., Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban,” she wrote on Twitter, echoing her remarks on the video. In a follow-up tweet, Omar defend her initial remarks: “Citing an open case against Israel, US, Hamas & Taliban in the [The International Criminal Court] isn’t comparison or from 'deeply seated prejudice'.

WASHINGTON — House Democrats briefed on security preparations ahead of President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration said Tuesday there is an "increased threat" to the Capitol — and that officials are working to combat it. A member who was on the call late Monday with U.S. Capitol Police and other security officials described it to NBC News as "chilling and horrific." Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., notified senators that they would receive a briefing Tuesday afternoon on inauguration security, a Senate source told NBC News. Later Tuesday, House Republicans are expected to receive a security briefing similar to the Democrats' Monday briefing, two sources said. The officials in the Monday House briefing also provided updates about the newly constructed perimeter around the Capitol and the increasing number of National Guard troops securing it.
