What Happened in the Ohio Train Derailment?
  + stars: | 2023-02-24 | by ( Brian Mcgill | Esther Fung | Taylor Umlauf | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
An overheated wheel bearing on a railcar was the likely cause of the train derailment in eastern Ohio this month, according to a preliminary report Thursday from the National Transportation Safety Board. When a detector along the tracks alerted the train crew to the issue, a train engineer applied brakes to slow and stop the train, the NTSB said. The crew later observed fire and smoke and alerted authorities.
A Norfolk Southern cargo train of 150 cars derailed near the Ohio town of East Palestine close to the Pennsylvania border on Feb. 3. Of the 38 railcars that derailed, 11 were hazardous-material cars, and officials assumed the contents of nine cars had vented, seeped into the ground and nearby waterways, or burned. Drone footage released by the National Transportation Safety Board two days after the crash shows dozens of train cars still on the tracks, some still on fire.
After three of the driest years in California history, winter storms brought some of the wettest weeks on record and unprecedented snow to parts of the state. What happens in the coming months, when it begins to melt, will determine how much of that snow becomes water usable by cities and farms across the state during the dry summer season—when it is needed most. In California, snowpack accumulated during winter is a vital aspect of the state’s water system. Snow is a natural form of water storage that melts during the spring and fills reservoirs with water that can then be distributed downstream to those who need it.
Heavy rain triggered widespread flooding and road closures across Los Angeles on Tuesday, as the state’s latest storm pummeled Southern California. Officials issued flash-flood warnings across much of the county, as more than 6 inches of rain fell in under 24 hours in some areas before easing in the afternoon. The string of recent storms that has hit California since Christmas has caused flooding, power outages and 17 deaths statewide, according to the governor. But the flood risk in Los Angeles is much greater than what the latest storm delivered, according to a study published in October. Hundreds of thousands of residents and billions of dollars in property are exposed to widespread flood risk in Los Angeles, a greater impact than federal flood zones suggest.
Scientists have analyzed what they say is the oldest DNA recovered to date, allowing them to reconstruct what life was like two million years ago in northern Greenland. The findings suggest a rich ecosystem that sustained a mix of animals and plants that doesn’t coexist anywhere on Earth today. The researchers analyzed fragments of ancient DNA preserved in the area’s sediments. The region hosted mastodons, reindeer, lemmings and geese, as well as birch, poplar and thuja trees. Horseshoe crabs, green algae and other marine life occupied nearby waters.
Water levels rose Tuesday in Key West, Fla., as early bands of rain associated with Hurricane Ian passed west of the Florida Keys. Authorities are keeping close watch on the potential for Hurricane Ian to unleash dangerous storm surge along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Tuesday forecasts suggest the highest storm surge could be up to 12 feet in the roughly 90-mile stretch just south of Tampa Bay, between Longboat Key down to Bonita Beach, according to the National Hurricane Center. For Tampa Bay, the latest forecast puts the surge potential at 4 feet to 7 feet.
Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge, wearing No. 99, hit his 60th home run of the season on Tuesday. As Aaron Judge chases the Yankees’ record for home runs hit in a single season, prices for the outfield seats that offer the hope of nabbing a historic ball have skyrocketed. With the New York Yankees set to host a four-game series against the Boston Red Sox tonight through Sunday, tickets behind the left- and right-field fences are virtually sold out on the Yankees’ website, while tickets for sale on reselling marketplaces are listed for several hundreds of dollars.
Queen Elizabeth’s funeral is set for Monday. The event will be rich in pageantry, giving well-wishers one last chance to bid farewell to the long-lived monarch. The proceedings will be attended by the royal family, senior U.K. politicians and foreign dignitaries, as well as thousands of members of the public who are expected to line the route as the Queen’s coffin travels through the streets of London and on to her final resting place at Windsor Castle, where she will be buried in a private ceremony.
