Federal Reserve officials were wary about the recent lack of progress on inflation and remained willing to lift interest rates if conditions made it necessary as of their two-day meeting that ended on May 1. Minutes from the gathering, released Wednesday, showed that “many” officials expressed uncertainty about how much today’s interest-rate setting — 5.3 percent, up sharply from near zero in early 2022 — was weighing on the economy. Officials have been clear that they expect to leave interest rates unchanged for now, hoping that they are tapping the brakes on economic growth enough to quash inflation over time. And central bankers have repeatedly emphasized that they expect the next move on interest rates to be a reduction, not an increase. But policymakers have stopped short of ruling out a future rate increase, allowing that it’s a possibility if inflation proves surprisingly rapid.

A "For Rent" sign is posted near a home in Houston, Texas, on Feb. 7, 2022. Many Americans are sitting on low-interest-rate mortgages and could face a decision when it's time to move: sell or rent out their existing property. By comparison, the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage was around 7% in May. That makes qualifying for a second mortgage harder, especially without tapping equity from your original property, Gumbinger said. Plus, if you're using rental income to qualify for the second mortgage, lenders typically only consider 75% of your proceeds, Gumbinger said.

In January, Steak 'N Shake, a fast-casual restaurant in the Midwest, started installing facial recognition kiosks in its 300 locations for patron check-in. "We believe our partnership with JPMorgan is a watershed moment for biometric payments as it represents the first time a leading merchant acquirer has agreed to push biometric payments to its merchant customers," Miller said. "JPMorgan brings the kind of credibility and assurance that both merchants and consumers need to adopt biometric payments." The majority still prefer fingerprint scans to facial recognition, according to a 2023 survey from PYMENTS, but age is a factor. Juniper Research forecasts over 100% market growth for global biometric payments between 2024 and 2028, and by 2025, $3 trillion in mobile, biometric-secured payments.

Read previewChevrolet is just getting started on its takeover of the electric car market, says Steve Majoros, the brand's chief marketing officer. It's not exactly a great time to put more electric vehicles on sale. But the tides finally are turning in Chevrolet's favor, Majoros said, as EV shoppers gravitate to more practical options and legacy brands. Recent studies on a new cohort of electric car shoppers show that they are more inclined to consider purchasing an electric car from a legacy brand. After years of a virtual monopoly on the EV market, shoppers are growing tired of Tesla and looking for fresher options.

Some of the best CD rates that I've found this year include 4% to 5% APY. Since my CD ladder is set up with a mix of short-term and long-term CDs, once the short-term CDs mature, I replace them with long-term CDs instead of short-term ones. As the short-term CDs mature and are reinvested in long-term CDs, the original long-term CDs will become closer to maturing. That means I can potentially reinvest the cash from a short-term CD into a longer term one that offers a higher APY. Right now, I don't have the funds to invest all of my cash into long-term CDs.

New York CNN —Netflix is rebuilding the cable bundle, sans one important ingredient: news. The company, having blown up the decades-old linear television business and ushered in the costly and destabilizing era of streaming, is inching closer and closer to resembling the entertainment behemoths of yesteryear. Netflix has shown little-to-no interest in investing in either live-news or pre-taped programming (a la, a show akin to “Vice News Tonight” or “60 Minutes”). Rebuilding the traditional cable package without news is akin to putting together a meal that includes steak, potatoes and ice cream, but not the broccoli. The vegetables might not be the tastiest, most popular item on the menu, but neglecting them would not be healthy.

Netflix and the N.F.L. Sign a Three-Season Deal

On Wednesday, the streaming giant announced a three-season deal with the National Football League that will include showing two Christmas Day games on its service this year. It’s the first time Netflix has become partners with a major sports league, and it likely won’t be the last. The move follows Netflix’s increasingly aggressive push into the business of live events. “There are no live annual events, sports or otherwise, that compare with the audiences N.F.L. football attracts.”The streaming business has matured in the United States, and though Netflix is the dominant service, it still needs to keep growing.

I always tell my financial planning clients to keep an emergency fund — but I don't keep cash on hand. We recommend keeping that money in a highly liquid vehicle, like a high-yield savings account or money market account. Your priority for your emergency fund should be access and safety, not returns. I have a much more intricate understanding of market risk and the impact of market downturns. The rule I refuse to break: Save (at least) 25% of gross incomeI urge my financial planning clients to prioritize their savings and investments.

Gen Z is getting hit hard by inflation

For Gen Z, it was the Covid-19 pandemic. Why are we seeing that Gen Z is tapping into their credit more than their Millennial counterparts 10 years ago? Most Gen Z consumers are not homeowners. And so I think that’s been a big cause of what’s been driving a lot of that financial strain that Gen Z consumers have seen. The key is to not use the personal loans to pay off credit card debt and then run your credit card bills right back up after you do that.

But one that could foreshadow India's growth story. Can Teleperformance's stock plunge be the canary in the coal mine for what is likely to happen to India because of AI? But it's likely to be a blip for India's growth trajectory, given the macro forces at play. Besides creating jobs that are less likely to be immediately disrupted by AI, India could also be a net beneficiary of artificial intelligence. The Indian stock market indexes, Sensex and Nifty 50 , are heading for a positive week again — up by 1% and 1.2%, respectively.
