She also has a knack for helping meat eaters step outside their comfort zones at her plant-based burger chain, Slutty Vegan. Stepping outside her own comfort zone became a priority when she met Derrick Jermaine Hayes, the founder of Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks in June 2020. “Before I met him, I never would have talked to anybody that has a cheesesteak restaurant,” she said. Not in a romantic way, anyway, because of her vegan principles.

Philip D. Murphy of New Jersey, along with the first lady, Tammy Murphy, had a vision: A new performance festival in their home state that could rival South by Southwest in Texas or Bonnaroo in Tennessee. And they had a plan to distinguish it. “Austin and Nashville are great towns,” the governor said, referring to two famous arts hubs that are connected to notable festivals. The North to Shore Festival will roam from Atlantic City to Asbury Park to Newark throughout the month. Its inaugural run will feature more than 220 acts — including music, comedy, dance and film — in 115 venues.

HEADS UP I used to have a policy where on Sunday I don’t touch media or look at my phone. Because the things you miss when you’re staring at those two inches of screen can be ridiculous. I’ve seen eagles in the park because I’m looking up, not looking at my phone. I’m one of those people who, when I’m walking, I’ll look in brownstone windows and be like, Ooh! ‘I’VE GOT THIS’ Later I’ll probably listen to more records or maybe play a video game or two.
