But as other pandemic Zoomtowns continue to see increases in prices and rents, Austin stands alone in its change of fortune. Housing in Austin has been through so many extreme distortions that nobody really knows what "normal" even means anymore. All told, Austin's housing stock has ballooned by more than 76,000 units since 2020, an 8.34% increase that includes single-family homes, condos, and townhomes. Considering the size of the Austin market, moving the stock of homes by nearly 10% is a colossal feat. A female cat has more freedom in Afghanistan than a woman does, Hollywood actor Meryl Streep said at the United Nations on Monday in a bid to get world leaders to focus on the plight of Afghan women and girls. “The way that ... this society has been upended is a cautionary tale for the rest of the world,” Streep told an event on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly to encourage the inclusion of women in the future of Afghanistan. The U.N. has sought a unified global approach to dealing with the Taliban, who have cracked down on women’s rights. Most girls have been barred from high school and women from universities by the Taliban. A squirrel has more rights than a girl in Afghanistan today, because the public parks have been closed to women and girls,” Streep said.

Nvidia is the latest poster child on Wall Street for "10 baggers," stocks that soar in price 10 times. But the AI chipmaker's path to " 10-bagger " status included what is also a typical slump (or two) along the way, according to Trivariate Research. To find the 84 stocks, Parker looked for names with market capitalizations over $2 billion and average daily trading volume of at least $30 million. He then screened for stocks that achieved 10-bagger status, and further culled the list to only those that accomplished the feat in the past 25 years. The chart below contains the names that achieved 10-bagger status most recently, along with information on their drawdowns.

But according to Dr. Nicky Longley, consultant in infectious diseases and travel medicine at The Hospital for Tropical Diseases (HTD) at University College London Hospitals, dengue vaccination is not quite the silver bullet travelers had hoped for. One traveler who welcomes the arrival of the new Qdenga vaccine is UK-based travel writer Chris Dwyer. Which vaccines do you need? Adults are advised to keep a record of their immunizations and when they need to be boosted.

The caution was warranted, according to a new Microsoft threat intelligence report, which confirms the fabricated tale was disinformation from a Russia-linked troll farm. The report builds on previous concerns the U.S. has had about Russian interference in the upcoming election. Notably, some of the recent examples cited in the Microsoft report received significant social media engagement from unwitting Americans who shared the fake stories with outrage. Goldman Sachs suspects that a reversal is coming as mid-cap earnings top those of large caps. And while small caps should post even higher earnings growth next year, that cohort is filled with unprofitable companies, Ma noted. "Low-quality segments of the market, such as small caps, will likely remain pressured at these levels due to weak balance sheets and low profitability." Below are 25 mid-cap stocks in the S&P 400 that Goldman Sachs spotlighted due to their solid balance sheets, double-digit expected earnings growth for 2025, above-average sales growth, and cheap valuations based on their forward earnings multiple versus their five-year median.

CNN —Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, never experienced a ruinous population collapse, according to an analysis of ancient DNA from 15 former inhabitants of the remote island in the Pacific Ocean. Settled by Polynesian seafarers 800 years ago, Rapa Nui, today part of Chile, has hundreds of monumental stone heads that echo of the past. But that theory remains contentious, and other archaeological evidence suggests that Rapa Nui was home to a small but sustainable society. Easter Island genomesTo investigate Rapa Nui’s history further, researchers sequenced the genomes of 15 former residents who lived on the island during the past 400 years. But the ancient genomes add to a growing body of evidence that the idea of a self-inflicted population collapse on Easter Island is a false narrative, said Matisoo-Smith, who wasn’t involved in the study.
