Harris’ campaign is pouring more money and effort into advertising, targeted messaging and on-the-ground organizing. “One in five Latino voters in this election are going to be voting for the first time, so they’re forming their opinions about the candidates. English is predominantly our first language,” Enriquez said on a Trump campaign press call earlier this month. “A full 55% of Latino voters had not heard from anybody, not just candidates, but nonpartisan or any other type of organization. The Latino Victory Fund on Saturday kicked off a plan to bus volunteers from New York to Pennsylvania to engage with the state’s more than 400,000 eligible Latino voters.

When President Joe Biden took office, he immediately halted border wall construction. “Vice President Harris believes in tough, smart solutions to secure the border, keep communities safe, and reform our broken immigration system,” Ehrenberg said. The border bill would have provided 1,500 more border personnel, upgraded technology and kicked off the “immediate resumption” of the border wall construction that was underway in 2021, according to its text. Del Cueto’s union supported the bipartisan border bill that is the basis for Harris’ border plan. “What I would say to Vice President Harris is she’s been there for 3 1/2 years.

But that has not stopped Trump from recycling some of the same dark portents about a Kamala Harris presidency. Even God was not safe from a Biden presidency, Trump warned. Washington CNN —A social media account run by Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign has been repeatedly deceptive. But the account, which the Harris campaign calls its “official rapid response page,” has itself made inaccurate comments on multiple occasions. The Harris campaign declined to comment on this @KamalaHQ post. The Harris campaign defended this @KamalaHQ post by arguing that “Trump’s entire platform is about embracing ‘tough’ policy of the past” on various subjects. The very next day, the Harris campaign used the @KamalaHQ account to tout her own popularity among chief executives.

Former President Donald Trump said at a campaign rally Thursday that he would eliminate taxes on overtime pay if he wins a second term in November. "I’m also announcing that as part of our additional tax cuts, we will end all taxes on overtime," he said in Tucson, Arizona. The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for details about the plan. The Harris campaign also pointed to a 2019 Trump administration overtime pay rule that replaced a more expansive proposal pushed by the Obama administration. The 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act created a 40-hour workweek and overtime pay standards, as well as the right to a minimum wage.

These American cities are heating up the most

Each has recorded at least 18 extremely hot days this year. San Antonio, Texas, experienced 54 extremely hot days, 16 more than its 2013-to-2023 average, while Nashville, Tennessee has logged 23, also 16 days above average. “The overall trend is clear: major American cities have experienced a significant rise in the number of extremely hot days,” said Tucker Landesman, a senior researcher with the International Institute for Environment and Development. Of the 50 cities, only three — Los Angeles, Omaha and Kansas City — did not experience an increase in extremely hot days over the five-decade period. “As the world’s richest country, the United States has the resources and technology needed to address extreme heat,” Landesman said.

PICACHO, Ariz. — How long does it take a large desert tortoise to get to the other side of a southern Arizona highway? It’s still a mystery, after a state Department of Public Safety trooper recently helped rescue an escaped sulcata tortoise that was attempting to cross Interstate 10 near Picacho. A motorist contacted authorities on July 30 to report a tortoise trying to cross the busy highway that’s halfway between Casa Grande and Tucson in Pinal County. Troopers saw the name “Stitch” labeled across the tortoise’s shell and contacted an ostrich ranch that was 3 miles away. According to the Arizona Republic, the ranch confirmed Stitch was one of it resident tortoises and had recently escaped from his habitat.

Police Nab Fugitive Tortoise on Slow Run to Freedom

On an interstate highway between Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz., drivers on their morning commute called 911 to report a runaway. He was miles from home and ambling across the four-lane highway when he was finally caught by police. State troopers, with the help of a few good Samaritans, stopped traffic and picked up the escapee: Stitch, a giant sulcata tortoise with a sand-colored shell. The 14-year-old tortoise had broken out of his enclosure and a few layers of fences at the nearby Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch, a roadside animal park open to the public, before making a run for it. Danna Cogburn, an owner of the ranch, said he had been missing for two to three hours before officers told the owners they had found him on the road.

But under a full moon, those activities can be transcendent. Looking up at the night sky, on the other hand, feels as though deep mysteries may be revealed. Astrotourism, travel devoted to stargazing and other celestial activities, is booming, spurred on, in part, by DarkSky International, which aims to protect the night skies from light pollution. “Viewing our starry night sky has connected humanity throughout the ages and allowed us to form a deep connection with the cosmos,” said Susan Serven, DarkSky’s communications director. “Now it’s seen as a growing potential economic driver, as well.”It could be the breathtaking photos captured by the Hubble telescope, the Northern Lights that dazzled farther south this spring, or our growing awareness of light pollution and its impact on migratory birds, nocturnal pollinators and other wildlife that has helped catalyze interest, but the night skies are sparking invitations to explore in new ways.

CNN —The Curiosity rover has made its most unusual find to date on Mars: rocks made of pure sulfur. “I think it’s the strangest find of the whole mission and the most unexpected,” said Ashwin Vasavada, Curiosity project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Previously, while exploring Mars, NASA’s Spirit rover broke one of its wheels and had to drag it along while using the other five to drive backward. And Vasavada says it’s what inspired the team to “look behind” the Curiosity rover — otherwise they wouldn’t have seen the crushed sulfur. To determine what process formed the sulfur rocks, the team considered nearby bedrock instead.

The Hyundai Santa Fe is a mid-size three-row family SUV that's all-new for 2024. I recently reviewed a well-equipped Santa Fe in the off-road focused XRT trim. This year, Hyundai gave the Santa Fe a full-on makeover, complete with rugged, angular looks and a standard third-row seat. While still slotted between Hyundai's compact Tucson and the brand's flagship Palisade, the new Santa Fe now has a distinct look and feel that stands out from the crowd.

CNN —An early analysis of a sample collected from the asteroid Bennu suggests that the space rock had an unexpectedly water-rich past — and it may have even splintered off from an ancient ocean world. But the compound from the Bennu sample is purer and has larger grains. Rocks and dust were collected from asteroid Bennu and returned to Earth by the OSIRIS-REx mission. New York CNN —Red Lobster wants to close several dozen more restaurants following its bankruptcy, and it has identified which ones are in danger of shutting down if the court approves its plan. The chain, which brought affordable shrimp and lobster to middle-class America and grew to become the largest seafood restaurant chain in the world, filed for bankruptcy last month. Red Lobster said that it had more than $1 billion in debt and less than $30 million in cash on hand. Part of its plan is to close some locations of its nearly 600 restaurants in the meantime. A few weeks prior to its bankruptcy, it abruptly closed around 50 locations across the United States.
