If you follow the news, you know that tensions between the United States and China are high and that the commercial relationship between the two biggest trading nations on the planet has been fraying. Yet, amid the ominous headlines about a possible “decoupling” of the United States and China, you may be surprised by how strong and binding their financial ties remain. The two economies are closely linked, and, as an old China hand, I think that’s a good thing. Consider that while the publicly traded U.S. companies in the S&P 500 obtain almost 60 percent of their revenue domestically, the biggest source of their foreign sales is China. The second-largest foreign source was Japan, with 2.6 percent; followed by Germany and Britain, with 2.2 percent each; and then Taiwan, with 1.8 percent.

Now, with $6 billion remaining, the focus is shifting to sending smaller awards to smaller companies—dozens of them, up and down the supply chain. "We are really focused on investing across the semiconductor ecosystem," Michael Schmidt, director of the CHIPS Program Office at the Commerce Department, told CNBC. The Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) said it launched joint military drills involving the army, navy, air force and rocket force in areas around Taiwan early Thursday morning. The drills are being conducted in the Taiwan Strait – a narrow body of water separating the self-ruling island with mainland China – as well as north, south and east of Taiwan. Jefferies upgraded MercadoLibre to buy and raised its price target on the stock. Asiya Merchant kept her buy rating and and hiked up her price target by $45 to $170, which suggests shares could jump 16.9% from Monday's close. Nodding to the stock's strong recent performance, analyst David Koning downgraded Toast shares to neutral and maintained his $28 price target. Analyst Kashy Harrison downgraded the stock to neutral from overweight and lowered his price target to $4.50 from $9, implying 8.4% upside. He also raised his price target to $2,100 from $1,400, implying upside of about 20% over the next 12 months.

The attack came on the tenth anniversary of a deadly knife rampage on Taipei’s metro that shocked an island with a reputation for being generally safe, and led to the eventual execution of the man who carried out the attack. Three passengers were injured in the incident on Tuesday in Taichung and were taken to hospital, city’s mayor Lu Shiow-yen told reporters. “As we were pinning him down, another man pried (the attacker’s) fingers and took away the knife,” a female witness told journalists at the scene. “I saw him (the attacker) holding a cooking knife and later saw a fruit knife on the floor,” he said. The incident also happened on the ten-year anniversary of a similar stabbing attack in the Taipei metro which killed four people and injured over twenty.

One semiconductor supplier could win big from a strong outlook from chip giant Nvidia , according to Morgan Stanley. " TSMC is the sole supplier for NVDA AI GPU, so we view NVDA's July-quarter revenue guidance, due on May 22, as a key catalyst," wrote analyst Charlie Chan. "We would expect TSMC's share price to rise if NVDA's guidance were to beat expectations." Investors will closely monitor Nvidia's July revenue guidance, which the market regards as one of the most significant indicators of AI server demand. U.S.-listed shares of Taiwan Semiconductor have rallied 47% this year.
