The great outdoors are now part of home life for Australian empty-nesters Mathew and Liz Kempton, after their gut renovation of a compact 1880s row house just north of Sydney Harbour Bridge. In 2017, they paid 4.35 million, Australian dollars, or about $2.88 million, for the 2,700-square-foot home that had an interior from a 1980s makeover. Working with CplusC Architectural Workshop, a studio in the Sydney area, they then spent about $1.7 million to reconfigure and reimagine the structure. It now has 3,800-square-feet of living space, three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. A separate guesthouse, with a garage, has remained unchanged.

CNN —A metro train has traveled under Sydney Harbour for the first time ever in what’s being described as “a historic first step” for the Australian city. It came over 91 years after the first steam train crossed over the Sydney Harbour Bridge back in January 1932. Courtesy NSW GovernmentThe $20.5 billion AUD (around $13.7 billion) Metro City and Southwest Line, an extension of Sydney’s Metro Northwest line, will eventually extend all the way to the suburb of Sydenham in the inner west of the city. Meanwhile, plans are also in place for a $27 billion AUD (around $18 billion) Metro West line underneath Hunter Street in the Sydney central business district. The city will have a network of four lines, 46 stations and 113 kilometers of new metro rail by 2030.

SYDNEY, Dec 31 (Reuters) - Australia is gearing up to celebrate its first restriction-free New Year's Eve after two years of COVID disruptions, with more than a million revellers expected to flock to Sydney's harbourfront and watch an elaborate fireworks display. Lockdowns at the end of 2020 and a surge in Omicron cases at the end of 2021 led to crowd restrictions and reduced festivities. However, curbs on celebrations have been lifted this year after Australia, like many countries around the world, re-opened its borders and removed social distancing restrictions. A rainbow of colour will light up Sydney Harbour, with 2,000 fireworks to be launched from the four sails of the Sydney Opera House and 7,000 fireworks from more positions on the Sydney Harbour Bridge than ever before. For the first time in 12 years, fireworks will be launched from four building rooftops to frame the spectacular show, the organisers said.
