PARIS — There are few sights more iconic than the Eiffel Tower and the Olympic rings. The multicolored logo adorned the Eiffel Tower during the Paris 2024 Games, just as they had hung from London’s Tower Bridge in 2012 and the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 2000. However, Hidalgo announced in the French media Aug. 31 that the rings would stay on the Eiffel Tower, until at least 2028 and perhaps beyond. After days of mounting criticism, the Eiffel family weighed in. Nevertheless, the Eiffel family say they won’t climb down without a fight.

SYDNEY (Reuters) - A woman swimmer was seriously injured in a shark attack in Sydney Harbour and had been taken to the hospital in a stable condition, authorities said on Tuesday. Police said they had been told the woman was swimming off the wharf when the shark attacked her. While shark sightings along Sydney's ocean-facing beaches are common, attacks in its iconic harbour are rare. Monday's incident took place near the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. "Shark bites are really rare ... the last incident that occurred in Sydney Harbour was in 2009," Amy Smoothey, senior shark scientist at the New South Wales department of primary industries, told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.Based on the bite patterns and images provided, the woman was likely attacked by a bull shark, Smoothey said.

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Thousand's marked Australia's national day on Friday with "Invasion Day" rallies in support of the country's Indigenous community, many of whom oppose celebrating the day a British fleet sailed into Sydney Harbour in 1788. Australia Day commemorates the day Britain established the state of New South Wales a penal colony, arriving in what is now the state capital Sydney with a "First Fleet" bringing colonists and convicts. Many people celebrate the holiday with barbecues and trips to the beach, and it is also a popular date for immigrants to receive their Australian citizenship. In Sydney, thousands of protesters, many waving Indigenous flags, gathered in the city centre at an "Invasion Day" rally before a march that closed nearby city streets. Two statues of colonial figures were vandalised in Melbourne earlier this week ahead of the contentious national holiday.

Sydney Harbour taking in the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and ferries at sunrise during the COVID-19 pandemic on April 20, 2020 in Sydney, Australia. Asia-Pacific markets rebounded across the region, following a broad sell-off on Monday. Wednesday will see Australia release its third-quarter GDP numbers, while investors will also digest the Reuters Tankan survey for Japan in December, which showed improving business sentiment among large Japanese manufacturers. The Tankan survey, done by the Bank of Japan quarterly, measures economic conditions in Japan and the survey results are considered a key economic indicator. The Reuters monthly poll is considered to be a leading indicator of the BOJ's official survey.

CNN —Saying that the Sydney Opera House is a well-known icon of Australia is kind of like saying the Amazon is a creek. Inaugurated on October 20, 1973, by the late Queen Elizabeth II, the Opera House now welcomes more than one million visitors every year. A rich historyThere’s much more to the Opera House than, well, opera. “I think there’s a big misconception that we’re the classical arts,” says Jade McKellar, chief customer officer for the Sydney Opera House. “The Sydney Opera House constitutes a masterpiece of 20th Century architecture,” UNESCO wrote in its designation.

Asia-Pacific markets fell across the board as Japan saw a surprise trade surplus in September and as Australia awaits its unemployment data for September. This also mirrors moves on Wall Street as U.S. Treasury yields jumped to multiyear highs, with the 10-year Treasury yield breaking above 4.9% for the first time since 2007. Meanwhile, the average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage rate hit 8%, the highest level since 2000.

On top of El Niño, there’s another climate fluctuation in the mix that amps up the likelihood of heat and drought. A fire rages in Bobin, 350 km north of Sydney, on November 9, 2019, during Australia's catastrophic Black Summer fire season. A combination of extreme heat and wind would likely fuel very intense fires “that will seem to come from nowhere,” he added. Whether summer heat will be unprecedented remains uncertain. “Increasing extreme heat is the clearest example,”he said, but it’s worsening the impacts of drought and extreme rain too.

Rupert Murdoch, one of the most powerful media tycoons of the modern era, is stepping down as chairman of Fox Corporation and News Corporation at the age of 92 and handing the reins to his 52-year-old son. The takeover planning appeared to begin in 2015, when Rupert named Lachlan and his brother James Murdoch as co-chairmen of 21st Century Fox. James later left the company, and Lachlan became CEO of the Fox Corporation in 2019, following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox. With his father’s departure, Lachlan will become the sole chairman of both Fox and News, after having co-chaired the company for years. It’s unclear whether right-wing cable network’s pro-Trump rhetoric will change with Lachlan Murdoch more fully in the driver’s seat.

As one of the co-hosts, this year’s Women’s World Cup was supposed to be the culmination of all this change; a celebration of Australia’s most beloved team. A shaky 1-0 win against Ireland kicked off the Matildas’ tournament before disaster struck once more and they succumbed to a shock 3-2 defeat against Nigeria. That 2015 run marked the Matildas’ best World Cup performance to date, after appearing in every edition since 1995. The assembled 75,784 fans represented a record crowd for a women’s soccer match in the country and the highest attendance at a Women’s World Cup for 24 years, according to FIFA. “It’s definitely transcended the traditional women’s community and so that’s really exciting.”Australia has played its part in making this the biggest Women’s World Cup in history.

SYDNEY, July 23 (Reuters) - United States Navy personnel from a newly commissioned U.S. combat ship paraded through Australia's capital on Sunday, as the two allies carry out war games amid China's military build-up in the region. "It's a culmination of not just the ship naming, of honouring the city, but the previous HMAS Canberra that was lost in World War Two." The Australian Capital Territory "Freedom of Entry" parade came after a commissioning ceremony for the USS Canberra on Saturday at an Australian naval base on Sydney Harbour. SYDNEY, July 22 (Reuters) - The United States commissioned a warship in Sydney, Australia, on Saturday, the first time a U.S. Navy vessel joined active service at a foreign port, as the two close allies step up their military ties in response to China's expanding regional reach. "Australians can be proud that this ship, designed in Western Australia by local industry and named after HMAS Canberra, is being commissioned here for the first time in the history of the United States Navy," Australian Defence Minister Marles said in a statement. The commissioning of the U.S. ship in Australian waters reflected "our shared commitment to upholding the rules-based order", he added. Under the AUKUS project announced in March, the United States and Britain have agreed to help Australia acquire a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines. Before that, in the early 2030s, the United States is supposed to sell Australia three U.S. Virginia class nuclear-powered submarines, with an option for Australia to buy two more.

The great outdoors are now part of home life for Australian empty-nesters Mathew and Liz Kempton, after their gut renovation of a compact 1880s row house just north of Sydney Harbour Bridge. In 2017, they paid 4.35 million, Australian dollars, or about $2.88 million, for the 2,700-square-foot home that had an interior from a 1980s makeover. Working with CplusC Architectural Workshop, a studio in the Sydney area, they then spent about $1.7 million to reconfigure and reimagine the structure. It now has 3,800-square-feet of living space, three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. A separate guesthouse, with a garage, has remained unchanged.
