But below the surface, the mini marine sanctuary is also a test bed for underwater technology that may take researchers to literal new depths. In the ocean, Underwater IoT could look like floating sensors, swarms of crewless vehicles, or a tetherless, wireless robot. Interest in ocean IoT is increasing because of its potential scientific, military, commercial, and conservation applications. AdvertisementWaleed Akbar, a research assistant at the MIT Media Lab, said that while developing underwater IoT is challenging, it's necessary. There's also the issue of energy consumption: Generally, preliminary underwater IoT devices have used batteries with limited capacity.

CNN —A remote Australian community has taken revenge on a massive saltwater crocodile by eating the 3.6-meter (11.8-foot) beast blamed for devouring pets and chasing children. On Wednesday, police in the town of Bulla in Australia’s Northern Territory shot the crocodile after deeming it a “significant risk to the community.”The animal was barbecued after it was shot by police. Numbers have boomed in the decades since, with the Northern Territory now home to some 100,000 crocodiles, according to the local government. In April, a 16-year-old boy was killed by a crocodile in northern Queensland while attempting to swim to shore after his boat broke down. A nine-year-old boy was lucky to survive a crocodile attack in the Northern Territory’s Kakadu National Park in January, after being hospitalized with “puncture wounds.”

Thomas, 25, had in January filed legal paperwork against World Aquatics, swimming’s governing body based in Switzerland, for its policy that restricts transgender athletes from competing in most elite women’s aquatics competitions. It also said national federations don’t have the authority to modify the application of a world governing body’s rules. Rich von Biberstein/Icon Sportswire/AP/FileA few months later World Aquatics ratified its updated gender policy, which went into effect in March 2023, according to the 24-page arbitral award. Read previewMy partner and I decided to splurge on a vacation to Costa Rica for a milestone birthday celebration this year. Costa Rica boasts 5% of the world's biodiversity, with white sand beaches and lush jungles to explore — a huge draw for us as animal lovers. My partner captured drone footage of our rafting trip down the Rio Celeste in Costa Rica. We chose to take a night walk that included a coffee and chocolate tour. I suggest a dedicated night walk tour, which usually begin at dusk, for a chance to see sloths and other creatures, rather than a gimmicky coffee and chocolate tour offered by many locations.

What Makes Katie Ledecky Swim?
  + stars: | 2024-06-08 | by ( Andrew Trunsky | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Long before Katie Ledecky was collecting gold medals and setting world records, she seemed nonchalant about making it across the pool. But when she saw her competitors cruising past, something sparked within her. Many of her early swims took place at Palisades Swim & Tennis Club, a wooded, family friendly setting in Cabin John, Md., near Washington. Her final meet at the club was in 2014, two years after she had won her first Olympic gold medal. “Palisades” is the first chapter of her new memoir, “Just Add Water,” which comes out on Tuesday, and the club’s pool remains her most meaningful place to swim.

No one knows more about losing weight than a fat person. Then, I lost over 200 pounds and realized that we need more compassion and nuance when it comes to talking about weight. I was super strict, and over the next 14 months I lost 200 pounds. I can love my (still fat) body while also making it as healthy as possible, which might involve losing weight. When I weighed 420 pounds, the idea of climbing Mount Everest would have seemed more reasonable than losing 200 pounds.

Of those seven stocks, Mizuho said its investment rating on Lowe's and PayPal were also above the Street consensus. Mizuho analyst David Bellinger's $280 price target implies that the stock could rally 29% from its Monday closing price. "We view Lowe's as decisively well-positioned as home improvement demand recovers and unleashes outsized, double-digit earnings expansion in the process," the analyst wrote. Similarly, financial technology platform PayPal has risen only about 4% this year, leaving its valuation "compelling" at current prices, according to Mizuho analyst Dan Dolev. Dolev's $90 price target is 42% above the stock's current price.

As the seat of power, Zhongnanhai is often thought of as China’s equivalent to the White House, or the Kremlin. Architectural changesThere have been serious revisions to the architecture of Zhongnanhai since the end of imperial rule in 1912. Having re-established Zhongnanhai as a center of political power in the new China, Mao set about rebuilding the compound according to his tastes. “It was here,” noted Aldrich, “with the background trappings of a scholar, that he met Nixon and Kissinger in 1972.”Most subsequent leaders have preferred to keep a house outside the Zhongnanhai compound. However, the compound hasn’t always been so forbidden for the masses following the collapse of China’s imperial dynasty.

The House select committee on China has asked the Justice Department and F.B.I. to investigate reports that Chinese authorities covered up positive doping tests for nearly half the swim team it sent to the last Olympic Games and that the global antidoping regulator failed to take action. “This scandal raises serious legal, ethical and competitive concerns and may constitute a broader state-sponsored strategy by the People’s Republic of China (P.R.C.) to unfairly compete at the Olympic Games in ways Russia has previously done,” the panel’s chairman, Representative John Moolenaar, Republican of Michigan, and its senior Democrat, Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois, said in a letter to Attorney General Merrick B. Garland and the F.B.I. The letter could put additional political pressure on the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation to ratchet up scrutiny of China’s athletic program and the organization responsible for policing the use of banned performance enhancers, the World Anti-Doping Agency, just two months before the 2024 Summer Games in Paris.
