Opinion | Reflections on Gen Z and ‘Sellout Culture’

To the Editor:Re “‘Selling Out’ Isn’t an Insult to Gen Z” (Sunday Business, May 26):Francesca Mari captures the zeitgeist that we in the social sector are battling: Even as the world’s challenges are more visible than ever, the percentage of graduates putting their full-time energy toward tackling them isn’t growing. Not only do we need this generation tackling world challenges as soon as possible, but as Ms. Mari’s reporting points out, graduates’ early destinations shape the people they become. Research about the impact of the Teach for All network’s two-year teaching commitments shows dramatic effects on participants’ beliefs about the roots of inequity and how to address it. Before we blame the young people, let’s consider what we’re doing as a society to foster their sense of agency and intentionality about where to put their time and energy. As parents, influencers and educators, we need to foster choices that will shape the future we collectively want to see.

Opinion | Empty Offices, Empty Storefronts

To the Editor:“All That Empty Office Space Belongs to Someone” (Sunday Business, Sept. 3) describes what in my view is a transitional period. Any company whose business model supports remote work will eventually be fully remote. This saves on office space as well as on commuting time and costs, and allows for recruiting talent from all over the world. Either a company rents offices that are only partly used, or it cuts office space. With rotating office space, people come in on different days, they do not meet and interact, and they may be less productive in shifting work spaces.

Opinion | How Should Gig Workers Be Classified?
  + stars: | 2023-06-19 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “Hustle Till It Hurts: Gig Work’s Luster Dims” (Sunday Business, May 28):The questions and concerns raised by freelance and gig work are important ones, but we need to stop trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. As a lawyer who has spent her career analyzing work force policy, hearing from women, single mothers and people with disabilities who feel left out of traditional work models, we need to address what’s missing from the conversation: the bigger policy picture. In America, the social safety net is tied to employment status, and worker classification laws are complicated and nuanced. Because of this, workers who want flexibility to choose when, where and how often to work have to choose between sovereignty and certainty. I urge policymakers to consider legislation that addresses these barriers by decoupling benefits from employment status, developing a thoughtful alternative model as other countries have done, and partnering with business leaders and educators to expand resources for workers to understand their classification status.
