Opinion: Alito’s second red flag
  + stars: | 2024-05-26 | by ( Kirsi Goldynia | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +18 min
This is not the first time Alito has found himself in hot water over displaying a controversial flag on his property. The upside-down flag, a signal of distress, was adopted by Trump supporters who believed the false claim that the election had been stolen. (Alito said his wife had raised the upside-down flag in response to a disagreement with a neighbor. The discovery also comes at a time when the Supreme Court will be making a decision about Trump’s claims of sweeping presidential immunity, his get-out-of-jail-free card for the federal cases he faces. “The notion that the Supreme Court can be trusted to be an arbiter above partisan politics has suffered major blows in recent years.

Rwanda, the court said, might send them back to countries where their lives could be at risk. The law that passed last week aims to override that court ruling by declaring that Rwanda is safe. Legality aside, it has never been clear that the policy is even capable of working. So what is the point of the Rwanda policy? But Mr. Sunak — under pressure from his party’s right to accede to their demands on immigration — needs an emphatic win, or at least something that looks like one.

Opinion | In Britain, Reality Is Cleaving in Two

In Britain, Armistice Day is usually an understated affair, marked only by two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. The other, comprising a few hundred people from Britain’s far right and football hooligan networks, gathered several miles away in Westminster. Her departure was quickly overshadowed by the shock return to frontline politics of the former prime minister David Cameron, the architect of austerity and Brexit. For all her extremist posturing, Ms. Braverman is part of an establishment consensus that firmly backs Israel’s war in Gaza. In Britain, as its politicians and public move away from each other, reality is cleaving in two.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Britain’s Treasury chief is to announce a hike in the national minimum wage on Monday, as the governing Conservative Party tries to persuade voters it is on the side of those who are struggling financially. Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt has ruled out tax cuts, saying they would fuel inflation. The exact amount will be set after a recommendation by the Low Pay Commission, an advisory body. The right-of-center Tories, in power since 2010, are lagging far behind the center-left opposition Labour Party in opinion polls. Truss, whose plan for billions in unfunded tax cuts spooked the financial markets, is calling for the party to “revive Conservative values” such as “cutting red tape, lower(ing) taxes and trusting that markets will find the solutions we all want.”

Russia has "lost nearly half" its combat power since invading Ukraine, a top UK defense official said. Admiral Sir Tony Radakin claimed Russia is now "so weak" it cannot wage a counter-offensive. "Russia has lost nearly half the combat effectiveness of its army," Radakin said, according to the Financial Times. Radakin's claims about Russia's combat losses in Ukraine are roughly in line with previous reporting. In February, Oryx, an open-source intelligence group, said that at least 1,000 Russian tanks had been destroyed in Ukraine — and another 500 captured.

Recently, the billionaire Microsoft co-founder sat down with U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak as the two answered questions generated by an AI chatbot. In past interviews, Gates has also said he'd tell his younger self to "read a lot" and "explore the developing world" as a traveler. "I never asked [Microsoft employees] to work any harder, or be tougher on their mistakes, than I was on myself," Gates told the "Armchair Expert" podcast in 2020. Eventually, Gates had to learn to lighten up, he told Sunak — especially as Microsoft grew. "For the small, early Microsoft group, that was OK," Gates said.
