How Much Caffeine You Should Actually Have—and When
  + stars: | 2024-01-13 | by ( Sumathi Reddy | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Caffeine can give us a boost, but too much can mess with our sleep and make us feel jittery. So how do we know what’s the right amount? Generally, government and health groups recommend that healthy adults consume no more than 400 milligrams of caffeine a day. That comes out to about four, 8-ounce cups of coffee, says Jennifer Temple , a professor of exercise and nutrition sciences at University at Buffalo School of Public Health and Health Professions.

The FDA is working on a proposal that would ban formaldehyde from hair smoothing and straightening products. Photo: TaniaKitura/ShutterstockMillions of women are using hair-straightening treatments and products that might be harmful to their health. More research is linking chemicals in these products to an increased risk of uterine, ovarian and breast cancer. Studies also suggest that frequent use of such products can negatively affect puberty and pregnancy.

The ubiquity of walk-in and urgent-care clinics has changed the way many of us seek treatment for what we think are minor ailments. Photo: Ericka Burchett/The Wall Street JournalYou’ve got a sore throat and want to get tested for strep. Do you try to make an appointment with your primary care doctor, or go to the nearby walk-in clinic? The ubiquity of walk-in and urgent-care clinics has changed the way many of us seek treatment for what we think are minor ailments such as the flu, pinkeye or a pulled muscle. Instead of trying to make an appointment with our primary care doctor, who might not be able to see you the same day, we often just go to the walk-in clinic.

Fingers Crossed: Flu Season Might Not Be So Bad This Year
  + stars: | 2023-10-31 | by ( Sumathi Reddy | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
There’s some good news about flu season this year. Doctors and scientists don’t expect the worst. The flu season in the Southern Hemisphere, where the cold-weather illness period wraps up as we head into ours, often serves as a harbinger of what’s to come for us. There, cases picked up a little earlier than usual in some countries but didn’t result in an especially large number of hospitalizations and deaths, say public health experts and doctors.

The age women start taking menopausal hormone therapy and the kind they take might affect their chances of developing dementia later in life, a new study found. Women have struggled for years with whether to take hormone therapy when they go through menopause. The medication can help relieve troubling symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. However, years of conflicting research on whether the therapy can lead to other health problems, including breast cancer, dementia and heart attacks, has left many women confused about what to do.

Marijuana Has Special Risks for Older People
  + stars: | 2023-03-26 | by ( Sumathi Reddy | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Cannabis can interfere with other medications, which is tricky for seniors because they are often on multiple prescription drugs. As more seniors use cannabis, doctors are calling attention to risks that can hit older people more than younger ones. Use of marijuana and CBD products has grown more common among middle-aged and older adults as they become legal in more states and more widely available in easy-to-take forms such as edibles. Seniors who consume them mostly say they do so to help manage pain, anxiety or sleep issues.

Some doctors are urging patients to cut back their consumption of sugar substitutes as questions mount about their health effects. In the latest study, published February in the journal Nature Medicine, Cleveland Clinic researchers found that the commonly used zero-calorie sweetener erythritol was associated with an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and death within three years.

How Doctors Use AI to Help Diagnose Patients
  + stars: | 2023-02-28 | by ( Sumathi Reddy | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Artificial intelligence is slowly changing the care that you get at the doctor’s office and in hospitals. At Mayo Clinic’s cardiology department, doctors use an artificial-intelligence program to help detect new heart problems. Elsewhere, a group of primary-care doctors is using it to help identify an eye condition that can lead to blindness. A number of hospitals are using it to catch patients at risk for sepsis.
