AdvertisementFormer Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández worked "hand in hand" with violent drug traffickers to send massive loads of cocaine into the United States, a federal prosecutor said on Wednesday in his opening statements at the high-profile New York trial of the fallen political leader. As the trial on drug and weapons charges kicked off, Hernández sat in the courtroom wearing a black suit. AdvertisementHernández's defense attorney, Renato Stabile, told the jury in his opening statements that Hernández "does not sit down with drug traffickers." Advertisement"There's gonna be a lot of talk at this trial, but not a lot of concrete evidence," Stabile continued. Speaking in Spanish through an interpreter, Josè Sànchez told jurors of 2013 meetings between Hernández and convicted drug trafficker Geovanny Fuentes Ramirez at the office of the company where Sànchez worked.

TEGUCIGALPA (Reuters) - Several hundred migrants have gathered at a bus terminal in northern Honduras in preparation to head towards the United States, local television reported on Friday, seeking to flee poverty and a lack of jobs in the Central American nation. Hoy Mismo news channel estimated that about 300 people had gathered at the Gran Terminal bus station in the northern city of San Pedro Sula, largely young people and families holding children. The caravan, expected to leave on Saturday, would mark the first such group of Honduran migrants traveling north during the administration of leftist President Xiomara Castro, who took office at the start of 2022. The government of Honduras estimates that about 64% of the country's 10 million inhabitants live in poverty. The Honduras migration and security ministries did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

By David Alire GarciaMEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A historic Mexico City church has morphed into the capital's largest migrant shelter, with hundreds of sleeping mats stacked high inside and a growing tent city clustered around it where many await news before resuming their risky trek north. The church is a way station for migrants as most wait for unpredictable appointments with U.S. border agents through a mobile phone app. DHS did not share overall wait times and it is unclear if they have lengthened or shortened since then. Arriving at the church earlier this week, 30-year-old Venezuelan migrant Alejandro Urbina explained near his tent that he logs onto the app every day. Reverend Benito Torres, the church's pastor, explained that the Christian imperative to help the most vulnerable is what motivates him.

TEGUCIGALPA, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Honduran police discovered nearly half a metric ton of the synthetic drug fentanyl hidden in a shipping container, officials said on Wednesday, in the first such seizure of the opioid in the Central American country. Honduras has for years been a transit point for cocaine trafficked from South American nations including Colombia and Bolivia en route to the United States, but its role in the fentanyl trade is poorly understood. Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that is estimated to be 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention. The United States has an opioid epidemic where the CDC recorded 75% of nearly 107,000 drug overdose deaths in 2021 involved an opioid. BENGALURU, Sept 15 (Reuters) - India's largest winemaker, Sula Vineyards (SULA.NS), is expanding its production capacity and counting on a pricing sweet spot to fend off foreign rivals in its home turf. Last year, the Indian government slashed import duties for some Australian winemakers as part of a foreign trade agreement (FTA) between the two nations. But among all the Indian wine companies, Sula has the least to fear," Chief Executive Officer Rajeev Samant told Reuters. He is counting on Sula's pricing strategy to thwart rivals. Wine consumers are getting "turned on" by the 800 rupee-plus category, he said, adding that the rise in demand for premium wines was largely limited to India's big cities.

TEGUCIGALPA, June 25 (Reuters) - The Honduran government announced curfews on Sunday in two northern cities after more than 20 people were killed overnight in separate attacks amid escalating violence in the country. President Xiomara Castro announced a 15-day curfew in Choloma between 9 pm and 4 am, effective immediately, and another in San Pedro Sula, effective July 4. There has been a partial state of emergency in parts of Honduras since December in a bid to confront violent gangs and turf wars. The minister, speaking at a press conference, added that 1,000 additional police and military are being sent to the Sula Valley, where Choloma and San Pedro Sul are located. Per protocol, local veterinarians in Espirito Santo took samples from the birds on site and sent them to the reference lab in Campinas, Brazil. "The entire industry is mobilized to monitor the situation identified in Espirito Santo," national meat lobby ABPA said in a statement. In other countries, avian flu outbreaks in wild birds have frequently been followed by transmission to commercial flocks. Bird flu outbreaks have contributed to higher prices of poultry and eggs, normally an affordable source of protein. Since early 2022, wild birds have spread the highly infectious virus farther and wider around the world than ever before.
Kevin Greenidge was 14 years old when he experienced cardiac arrest on an American Airlines flight. A lawsuit filed recently by the teenager's mother alleges the defibrillator on the plane wasn't working. The suit says the defibrillator was faulty — and places the blame on American Airlines. In a statement to Insider, an American Airlines spokesperson said the carrier was reviewing details of the lawsuit. American Airlines didn't comment to Insider on the number of times defibrillators have been used on its flights.
Honduras lifts decade-long ban on 'morning after pill'
  + stars: | 2023-03-09 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Castro, the country's first female president, took office last year after running on the promise of rolling back the country's restrictive reproductive policies. Honduras, a heavily Catholic nation, banned the use and sale of the morning after pill in 2009, arguing the emergency contraception would cause abortions. Castro, who signed the order on International Women's Day, tweeted that the morning after pill was "part of women's reproductive rights, and not abortive," citing the World Health Organization. The year before Castro took office, Honduras' Congress passed a constitutional reform to protect anti-abortion laws, requiring a three-fourths vote to change them. Between 50,000 to 80,000 clandestine abortions occur each year in the country, according to a 2019 estimate from local rights groups.
REUTERS/Fredy Rodriguez/File PhotoTEGUCIGALPA, Jan 7 (Reuters) - The Honduran government on Saturday extended a state of emergency declaration for 45 days, expanding it to additional areas of the country in an effort to fight criminal gangs amid high levels of violence. The state of emergency, in place since Dec. 6 in 165 areas of Honduras' largest two cities, Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, has been expanded to 235 of the country's 298 municipalities, the national police said. Police chief Gustavo Sanchez said the decision, based on what he told journalists were good results during December, will allow continued reductions in crime and violence. During the first month of the measures, 39 criminal gangs were destroyed and 652 people were arrested, while 43 kilos of cocaine and thousands of grams and rocks of crack were seized, the police said. It was last trading down 4.2% at 341.8 rupees in a broader market (.NSEI) that was down 0.58%. "We like Sula, given (its) market leadership in India’s grape wine industry, especially in premium brands," said Motilal Oswal equity strategist Hemang Jani. It raised a total of 9.6 billion rupees in the IPO, including 2.88 billion rupees from anchor investors like Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and Goldman Sachs. Sula, India's largest winemaker, has a portfolio of 56 labels from 13 of its own brands and 20 international ones. Its net revenue rose 8% year-over-year to 4.57 billion rupees in fiscal year 2022.
About 26.9 million shares will be sold for between 340 rupees and 357 rupees in the IPO, with Sula raising 9.60 billion rupees, Chief Executive Rajeev Samant said at a press conference in Mumbai on Wednesday. However, that is less than Radico Khaitan Ltd's (RADC.NS) market value of 147.52 billion rupees and United Spirits Ltd's (UNSP.NS) 682.18 billion rupees valuation. Streaming platforms have also helped popularise wine, added Samant, who launched Sula in 1996. Its net revenue rose 8% year-over-year to 4.57 billion rupees in fiscal 2022. Sula's IPO will be open for subscription from Dec. 12-14 and debut on the stock exchanges between Dec. 20-22, the company said.
TEGUCIGALPA, Dec 3 (Reuters) - The government of Honduras announced on Saturday that it will suspend some constitutional rights in areas of two main cities controlled by criminal groups. The cities have been struggling with a so-called "war tax", in which gangs offer protection or say that those who pay up will not be killed. The gangs have torched buses and killed drivers who did not pay the fee, prompting businesses and people to pay out of fear. The measure, which is expected to be endorsed by the council of ministers, is part of President Xiomara Castro's plan to deal with violent gangs.
