A Commerzbank AG bank branch, in the financial district of Frankfurt, Germany, on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024. Krisztian Bocsi | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesCommerzbank and UniCredit are set to begin talks Friday, with the German bank on the defensive over a potential takeover after its Italian counterpart unexpectedly increased its stake earlier this month. Speaking at a financial conference, Orlopp said the German bank was open minded, but that the speed of synergies and risks needed to be considered. The potential for a takeover or merger has been met with opposition from Germany's government and several senior figures at Commerzbank. Orlopp herself earlier this month told journalists that the process had taken Commerzbank by surprise, but urged a calm approach.

Donald Trump’s presidential campaign told NBC News on Wednesday that if the former president were re-elected, his administration would support “universal access” to in-vitro fertilization, potentially opening up the door for same-sex couples to receive coverage for the expensive fertility treatment. President Trump also supports universal access to contraception and IVF,” campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. Many of Trump’s campaign promises regarding LGBTQ issues center on transgender people. Only seven states — including Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey and New York — require IVF benefits to include same-sex couples, according to a report from nonprofit news website Stateline. In May, a gay couple filed a first-of-its-kind class action lawsuit against New York City alleging that the city’s health insurance plan is discriminatory because it doesn’t cover IVF for male couples.

Sorokin was convicted in 2019 of duping friends and financial institutions out of hundreds of thousands of dollars while masquerading as a German heiress. “DWTS” alum and choreographer Maksim Chmerkovskiy called her a “professional liar” and mocked her dancing on a TMZ podcast. “Anna is fascinating to a lot of people… so I think there is an inherent curiosity about her,” Green said. Her crimes were “not right,” Sosa said, but nobody “deserves the amount of hate she’s getting.” Sorokin “deserves a second chance,” he asserted. Sorokin said she probably won’t keep up with the show as it continues, but she hopes actor Reginald VelJohnson will win.

For the study, released jointly by Chinese American civic engagement nonprofit Committee of 100 and NORC at the University of Chicago, researchers sampled 504 Chinese Americans in March. But the Biden-Harris administration published a memorandum in 2021 condemning the use of racist rhetoric toward Asian Americans. About two-thirds of respondents said they felt that the rhetoric used by U.S. media when reporting on the issue negatively affects how strangers treat them. Land restrictions, like in Florida, that limit Chinese citizens from buying property, could be affecting the Chinese community as well. “Regardless of the intention of these tough-on-China policies, there are unintended consequences on the treatment of Chinese Americans.”

An apology thought to be from singer Janet Jackson following a comment repeating misinformation about Vice President Kamala Harris' racial identity wasn't actually made by her or authorized by her team. Elmasri claimed to be Jackson's manager, but representatives for the singer said her brother, Randy Jackson, is her only manager. Jackson told the interviewer that she "heard" Harris was Indian not Black. Jackson continued to push what she had "heard" despite the interviewer explaining Harris' father was a Black man. "Janet respects Harris’ dual heritage as both Black and Indian and apologizes for any confusion caused," his statement said.

"The key to finishing our work this week will be bipartisan cooperation, in both chambers.”Last week, 14 House Republicans teamed with nearly all Democrats to torpedo a six-month funding bill that included the SAVE Act. “It’s, in my opinion, galactically stupid to do a government shutdown even after an election. Schumer, the Senate Democratic leader, took steps last week to tee up a vote on a government funding bill, preparing the upper chamber to step in if Republicans in the House flame out again. Some Republicans had pushed for the House to act quickly, worried that a funding bill passed by the Democratic-led Senate could be loaded up with extraneous spending. If Congress succeeds in passing the new House CR before the Oct. 1 deadline, they'll have another shutdown fight awaiting them in December.

Yet Johnson, and any other Republican who votes for this bill, will be quietly defying Trump's wishes just weeks before the 2024 election. In essence, Trump asked Republicans to threaten a government shutdown over the provision. Yet when the continuing resolution with the SAVE Act came up for a vote last week, it failed, with 14 Republicans voting against it. Many Republicans simply don't want to have this fight right nowDespite Trump's push, Republicans on Capitol Hill understand that actually following his lead would be reckless. It's certainly possible that most Republicans will vote against Johnson's new government funding bill.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on Sunday told reporters that there’s a “really good chance” that the government will not shut down at the end of the month. “We really now have some good news: There’s a really good chance we can avoid the government shutdown with all the pain it would cause for New York and America this week,” Schumer said. Discussions about keeping the government open are particularly tense now, with less than 50 days left before the presidential election. There’s too great a consequence for the American people.”Johnson is expected to unveil and vote on a short-term bill to fund the government this week. CNN —Donald Trump’s obsession with election fraud that doesn’t exist in any significant form could drive the country into a government shutdown — and may even put the Republican House majority at risk. But given the tiny House GOP majority and Trump’s looming presence, every step the speaker takes will be perilous – especially if he hopes to cling to his job if Republicans succeed in holding the House in November. WASHINGTON — House Republicans on Wednesday are expected to derail their own plan to avert a government shutdown at the end of the month, with the party divided over the length of a short-term funding bill and what, if anything, should be attached to it. Democrats, who want a “clean” three-month funding patch with nothing attached, and nearly all plan to vote no. But the overwhelming majority of rank-and-file Republicans back Johnson’s move, saying holding the vote will put lawmakers on record. Everyone.”Davidson, who was ousted in July from the far-right House Freedom Caucus, lamented that Republicans have failed to unify behind a plan weeks before the election. That would buy time for bipartisan negotiators to strike a longer-term funding deal during the lame-duck session for fiscal year 2025 — if a short-term bill can pass the House.

At least five game show contestants were "shamelessly exploited" and subjected to "unreasonable, unsafe" working conditions on Amazon Prime's "Beast Games,” a California civil action said this week. "Beast Games" has been billed as a reality competition program with $5 million in prize money, according to Amazon which acquired streaming rights to the show. "Defendant production companies and Amazon shamelessly exploited the labor of approximately (redacted) people who served as contestants," according to lawyers representing the plaintiffs. The 50-page complaint also redacted details of how plaintiffs allegedly suffered and broadly suggested that work conditions were unsuitable. There was also "insufficient medical staff to attend to potential and actual injuries during" production, lawyers for the contestants said.

Vice President Kamala Harris called the rate cut “welcome news,” while former President Donald Trump suggested, without evidence, that the decision could be politically motivated. With less than 50 days until Election Day, another question has emerged: Will the rate cut matter to voters? In fact, they already have – mortgages are based on bond yields, which have fallen in recent weeks in anticipation of a rate cut. Harris responded to the rate cut by saying she’s focused on bringing down prices. This story has been updated with reaction to the Fed’s rate cut announcement.
