Things are so bad that even tech workers, who make some of the highest salaries of any profession, are feeling the crunch. Entry-level tech workers made an average of $75,262 in 2023, and could only afford 2.1% of studio and one-bedroom rental apartments in the city, StreetEasy found. "If these tech employees can't afford housing, then who can?" But even as New York City has created 800,000 new jobs in the last 10 years, it's only built 200,000 new homes. A new Zillow and StreetEasy analysis finds that rental price growth is far outpacing wage growth in most big cities — and New Yorkers are particularly screwed. Fortunately, no-fee apartments still exist, and some neighborhoods have a higher share than others. This week’s chart, based on StreetEasy data as of April 2023, shows the New York neighborhoods with the highest and lowest shares of no-fee apartments. A 50 or 60 percent share of no-fee rentals may seem high to those who have done some looking. That could be because most of the city’s no-fee rentals are in expensive new buildings and go for over $3,000 a month. To reveal where the highest share of units listed both above and below $3,000 were, the study ranked neighborhoods by no-fee listings in each price range individually.

Earning $300,000 in New York, San Francisco, and Honolulu feels like earning $100,000. Inflation surged to highs not seen since the 1980s in 2022, pushing the cost of living higher. The study found that New York, San Francisco and Honolulu have the highest cost of living at over 80% above the national average. New York came in at a close second with $312,000 needed, while San Francisco required $310,700. In March, the rate of consumer price inflation was 5%, remaining significantly above average compared to the past 30 years.

Alexis Stewart, a media personality and the daughter of lifestyle guru Martha Stewart , has found a buyer for her triplex Manhattan apartment four years after listing it. Ms. Stewart has signed a contract to sell the six-bedroom West Village unit for a price in the low $30 million range, according to a person familiar with the situation. That price is significantly less than the $53 million she asked when the property first came on the market in 2019. It was most recently asking $37 million, according to listings website StreetEasy.
