It sounds like the setup to a lightbulb joke: How much does it cost to change a microwave bulb? While my lightbulb situation may be somewhat unique, experts say it is not uncommon to learn the cost of repairs is more than the cost to replace an appliance. Figuring out the cost for a repairMy first call to repair our microwave was to the appliance store where I made the purchase. Several states — including California, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota and New York — have implemented so-called "right to repair" laws. Some products designed 'with a hostility to repair'Consumer advocates say state laws and the FTC actions help, but haven't solved the problem.

Read previewThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Daniel Beiler, 33, an emergency medical technician and aid volunteer who grew up in a traditional Amish community in Pennsylvania. An Amish family walks through a field. He taught me that there were other Amish people questioning things — and eventually the Amish system couldn't hold us anymore. When 36-year-old Nelson Cheney was little, he began eating spicy peppers and sauces to impress his dad. Cheney, known by his social media handle “@craving_capsaicin” — a nod to the chemical compound that gives chili peppers their heat — got hooked on the adrenaline rush he feels when he eats extremely spicy foods. Both sour and spicy foods generate painful responses, though they activate different nerves in the body. “I’ve got so many people that went from not even eating hot stuff to having a tolerance and now eating spicy food daily. Cancer is typically associated with older people, but the percentage of colorectal cancer cases in those under 55 doubled between 1995 and 2019, from 11% to 20%, according to the American Cancer Society. However, it's understood that lifestyle factors such as being overweight, being physically inactive, drinking alcohol, and eating lots of red meat and ultra-processed foods increase colon cancer risk, Meredy Birdi, a cancer dietitian based in London, told Business Insider. There's good evidence that eating fiber lowers colorectal cancer risk, she said. She shared three high-fiber lunch recipes that could help prevent colorectal cancer with BI. Ms. Massey had called emergency services because she believed an intruder had entered her home, prosecutors said. Mr. Grayson, 30, was charged with murder and was fired last month. Body camera footage from the shooting shows that Mr. Grayson and his partner searched outside of Ms. Massey’s home before they followed her inside. After she provided the officers with her identification, she went to the kitchen to remove a pot of water from the stove. As she was handling the pot, several feet away from the deputies, Ms. Massey said twice to the deputies, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.”

Please.” It’s unclear whether the deputies who responded the next day knew about her mental health concern. On July 5, Massey and her mother, Donna Massey, called 911 at different times, according to Sangamon County records. In a news conference, Massey’s family and their attorney Ben Crump said she had mental health challenges. You can go get it but that’s a headshot.”Officers trained to recognize mental health crisesLaw enforcement experts tell CNN officers are trained in recognizing whether they are dealing with someone who might be experiencing a mental health crisis. The officers could have asked more questions to determine Massey’s mental state and asked whether she’s receiving social services before using deadly force, experts said.

On July 6, Sonya Massey called 911 to report an intruder. The situation escalated after Ms. Massey went to turn off her stove. There still a lot we don’t know about the Massey situation, including if she was experiencing mental distress. But the killing of Ms. Massey is a cold reminder of how little has changed in the years since. And yet, more than 1,100 people were shot and killed by police officers last year — the highest one-year number on record.

He also failed to obey a command while working for another sheriff’s office in Illinois and was told he needed “high stress decision making classes,” the agency’s documents reveal. Bodycam footage from another deputy showed Massey saying she rebuked Grayson, and Grayson responded by threatening the 36-year-old. In May 2022, Grayson started working at the Logan County Sheriff’s Office in Illinois, records show. Then he started working full-time with Auburn police, the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, and finally the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office in May 2023. Body-camera footage released Monday showed the fatal police shooting of the 36-year-old Black woman who had called 911 for help. Here’s what you need to know about the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, what happened to it and its chances of passing. The measure seeks to ban racial and religious profiling by law enforcement at the federal, state and local level. It would mandate an overhaul of a legal doctrine known as qualified immunity that critics claim shields law enforcement from accountability. But policing reforms have not been a priority in a Congress where House Republicans are in the majority.

The state’s training and standards board records show Grayson’s law enforcement certification has been suspended. It is unclear why Grayson changed jobs so frequently and CNN has reached out to the other law enforcement agencies for more information. Minutes after the shooting, Grayson speaks to another law enforcement figure. The Secret to Great Korean BBQ Is Not What You Think
  + stars: | 2024-07-24 | by ( Eric Kim | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
In my house growing up, Korean-barbecue clothes were a set of raggedy T-shirts and sweatpants reserved for nights when we were grilling at home — and by grilling at home, I mean indoors. My family would grill meat right at our round, lacquered dining table. In the center sat a portable butane stove, topped with a three-foot domed wheel of steel, a heavy black pan made by a metalworker friend of my mother’s. A spaceship-looking thing, it sat perfectly over the butane stove, sizzling with galbi, soy-marinated short ribs; samgyeopsal, gloriously fatty pork belly; and chadolbaegi, razor-thin slices of brisket that curled up as soon as they hit the heat. These fiery meals were precise but casual, remarkable but easy to throw together.
In a case that has drawn the attention of President Biden, the Illinois State Police on Monday released disturbing body camera footage that showed a sheriff’s deputy fatally shooting a woman in the head in an exchange over a pot of water. Ms. Massey, who was Black, had called the police early that morning because she believed an intruder had entered her home in Springfield, Ill., according to her lawyers. The deputies followed Ms. Massey inside and asked her for identification while she sat on a sofa, footage shows. Ms. Massey then got up to remove a pot of hot water from the stove. As she was handling the pot, several feet away from the deputies, Ms. Massey said twice to the deputies, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.”

CNN —An Illinois woman was fatally shot inside her home this month by a sheriff’s deputy who responded to her 911 call, and the deputy is now charged with murder in the case, a prosecutor said this week. Sangamon County sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson and another deputy responded to the call around 12:50 a.m., authorities said. The sheriff’s office said the deputies, who were not injured, reported the shooting around 1:20 a.m. Crump’s office has said Massey was unarmed. When the two responding deputies encountered Massey, she “appeared to be calm, perhaps unwell, not aggressive,” the court document said. Sean Grayson has been fired from his job as a Sangamon County sheriff's deputy and faces murder and other charges in Sonya Massey's death, officials said.
