Oil set for weekly gain on signs of improving demand
  + stars: | 2024-05-17 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Oil prices rose in Asian trading hours on Friday, with global benchmark Brent set for its first weekly increase in three weeks on signs of improving global demand and slowing inflation in top oil consumer the United States. Brent crude oil prices rose 21 cents, or 0.3%, to $83.48 a barrel by 0018 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose 18 cents, or 0.2%, to $79.41 a barrel. Brent futures are set to rise about 1% on a weekly basis, and WTI futures are set to gain 1.4%. Recent declines in oil and refined products inventories at major global trading hubs have created optimism over oil demand growth, reversing a trend of rising stockpiles that had weighed heavily on crude oil prices in prior weeks.

The CEO of Trump Media urged leading House committee chairmen to investigate eight financial firms over concerns of potentially illicit short selling of DJT, whose majority shareholder is former President Donald Trump. A spokesperson for Clear Street declined to comment on Nunes' letter. DJT shares were trading 6% higher early Thursday at $47.84 per share, which is 32% lower than its opening price on March 26. Trump, who is the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, faces pending civil legal judgments of more than $500 million. "Based on factors including the volume and price of purportedly available 'locates,' [Trump Media] has identified ongoing anomalies in DJT trading," Nunes wrote the House Judiciary, Ways and Means, Financial Services, and Oversight and Reform chairmen in his new letter.

Brokerage firm BTIG accuses rival StoneX of stealing technology
  + stars: | 2023-11-14 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Nov 13 (Reuters) - U.S. brokerage firm BTIG on Monday filed a lawsuit against rival StoneX Group Inc (SNEX.O), accusing it of stealing trade secrets, and sought at least $200 million in damages. "Defendant StoneX recruited a team of BTIG traders and software engineers to exfiltrate BTIG software code and proprietary information and take it to StoneX," lawyers for BTIG wrote in the suit filed in the California Superior Court, San Francisco County. StoneX used the software code and proprietary information to build competing products and business lines "that generate tens of millions of dollars annually," they said. StoneX did not immediately respond to a Reuters' request for comment outside of regular business hours. BTIG's lawyers also requested the court issue an injunction to prevent StoneX from using or disclosing BTIG's trade secrets or other proprietary information.

Unusually hot and dry weather in Mato Grosso has caught traders’ attention. October weather in North Mato Grosso BrazilIn Brazil’s southern state of Parana, October rainfall totaled around 350 mm (13.8 inches), the most for any month in at least 25 years. It is unhelpful in this analysis that there have not been many stronger El Ninos in recent years for comparison. Soy yield was 13% below trend that year, but otherwise, soy yields rarely miss in Mato Grosso, making it difficult to detect an impending disaster. In the south, Parana’s rainiest soy-growing seasons have most often coincided with El Ninos, but actual yield outcomes are mixed.

Chinese wheat purchases have stabilised global wheat prices, one of the Singapore traders said. Given lower output in Australia, traders and analysts said China is likely to import significantly higher volumes of French wheat in the coming months.

Big government will drive the next market cycle

Growth picked up while quiescent inflation permitted interest rates to fall. Bereft of government support, central banks tried to stimulate their economies by pushing interest rates to new lows. That means interest rates will struggle to return to the ultra-low levels seen after 2008. The first takeaway is that higher debt levels, inflation and interest rates should be bad for bonds. Vincent Deluard of StoneX has proposed a division between intangible and tangible companies.

How U.S. soybeans influence global economics
  + stars: | 2023-10-12 | by ( Andrea Miller | In Dreajmiller | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
"Soybeans are kind of that wonder crop that has amazing capabilities" Arlan Suderman, chief commodities economist at StoneX, told CNBC. "The average soybean production in our county 40 years ago, in 1980, was 31 bushels. The global soybean market exploded in recent years with U.S. production at the forefront. However, the U.S. has since lost its dominance, in part, thanks to its reliance on a single export market: China. According to data from the USDA, about half of the value of U.S. soybean exports head to China.

Three months ago, a Reuters poll predicted prices would average $1,950 in 2023. Standard Chartered analyst Suki Cooper said gold is "more likely to test the downside until rate cuts materialise unless a new catalyst emerges". For silver , the poll forecast average prices of $23.52 an ounce in 2023 and $25.00 in 2024. "Anaemic performance from gold and concerns over economic outlook especially in China" have weighed on silver, O'Connell added. But silver could still find support from solar panels demand, analysts said.

The complex interplay between the transition, policy, economic performance and consumer preferences have made it harder than ever to forecast gasoline demand. Since then, the post-pandemic transition to a hybrid workplace has cut fuel demand for commuting. With the difficulty of predicting where gasoline demand goes from here, the EIA has revised its forecast several times this year. In January, it pegged demand this year at 8.74 million bpd, a fall from 8.76 million bpd last year. JPMorgan estimates that efficiency gains and EV sales wiped around 100,000 bpd from gasoline demand last year.
