The utilities sector is living in the shadows of mega-cap tech, but a power player name is emerging — and it's toting year-to-date gains of more than 40%. Constellation Energy , headquartered in Baltimore, is the top winner in the utilities sector in 2024, with NRG Energy in a distant second place with a 22.7% advance. Indeed, the utilities sector and real estate are the two laggards of the S & P 500 , down about 1% and 3.5% in 2024, respectively. CEG XLU 1Y line Constellation Energy versus the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund over the past year Constellation, which currently has a dividend yield of 0.8%, isn't your father's utility. So-called 24/7 carbon-free power involves purchasing electricity generation from the same region where a corporate client will use it.

First Solar is well-positioned to fend off growing clean energy competition, according to Wolfe Research. Analyst Steve Fleishman upgraded the solar stock to an outperform rating in a note to clients Friday, citing an improving long-term outlook. Fleishman set a $170 price target on the stock, suggesting shares can rally nearly 30% from Thursday's close. The stock has already surged more than 50% this year and 7% this month as investors set their sights on clean energy alternatives. Fleishman also views First Solar as a "uniquely positioned" clean energy stock in a rising-rate environment.
A rising rate environment could spell trouble for solar stocks Sunrun and Sunnova Energy in the near term, according to Wolfe Research. "Headwinds from the interest rate spike on financing costs and valuation are tough to ignore despite strong demand growth from IRA and rising utility rates," he wrote in two separate notes to clients Wednesday. Fleishman said both stocks are among the most exposed to a rising rate environment given their reliance on consistent access to capital. "We are still big believers in the demand tailwinds for the business from the benefits in IRA and from pricing headroom afforded by rising utility rates, which we expect to continue moving higher," he said. Shares of both Sunrun and Sunnova are down more than 40% this year.
