CNN —The biggest drama in the trial of former President Donald Trump on Monday came not, as expected, in the cross-examination of former Trump attorney Michael Cohen. His testimony wrapped without any moments approaching the significance of last week’s defense hits on the star witness. Cohen had already admitted that he lied to Costello, and indeed lied more broadly to protect Trump before cooperating with the government. But Cohen has already testified that he lied about Trump’s knowledge of the payment to Daniels before cooperating with prosecutors. It culminated before the lunch break with a bit of razzle- dazzle to bolster Cohen’s testimony about what happened on that phone call with Schiller and Trump.

Surgical castration “will always be pronounced” for those guilty of raping a child under the age of 10, according to the law's wording. Cases of rape against children between the ages of 10 and 13 will be punished by surgical or chemical castration. The younger the child, the greater the punishment,” Randriamanantenasoa said. Chemical castration is the use of drugs to block hormones and decrease sexual desire. Several countries and some U.S. states — including California and Florida — allow for chemical castration for some sex offenders.

Morning Bid: Yen hangs under intervention cloud

Banknotes of Japanese yen are seen in this illustration picture taken September 23, 2022. As Europe wakes up, the yen is not far off the one-year low of 151.74 hit this week and the three-decade low of 151.94 touched last year, which triggered an intervention by Tokyo at the time. The broad yen sell-off on Tuesday came a day after the BOJ watered down its 1% yield cap on the 10-year bond. How hard the BOJ defends the so-called 1% reference will be the key question traders ask in coming days. With little on Europe's economic calendar, investors are likely to keep the focus on the Fed and yen.

Newmark, 70, spoke to CNBC as he was recovering from a minor heart procedure he went through in late August. At the same time, he's worried that tech companies, particularly in social media, "aren't even trying anymore to get rid of stuff they know is dishonest," he said. "Protecting kids when it comes to AI is a big issue," Newmark said, regarding his donation to Common Sense Media. Within journalism, Newmark's most high-profile endeavor is the City University of New York's Craig Newmark Graduate School in Journalism.

CNN —Wall Street’s optimism has edged up in recent weeks after an August slump to levels not seen since the collapse of several regional banks earlier this year. CNN’s Fear & Greed Index, which tracks seven different barometers for market sentiment, has oscillated between “neutral” and “greed” territory this month after plunging to a “fear” reading mid-August. The broad-based S&P 500 index has roared 16% higher this year, propped up by Wall Street’s infatuation with artificial intelligence that’s driven a powerful rally in tech stocks. While the Fed’s policy meeting is taking place next week, there’s a laundry list of factors stoking uncertainty in the market. September has historically been the worst month for stocks, and it could live up to its reputation this year.

Kohli is the solution to India's No 4 concerns, says Shastri
  + stars: | 2023-08-17 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
NEW DELHI, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Fielding Virat Kohli at number four could address India's long-standing concerns about a settled batter at that crucial position, former coach Ravi Shastri has said. Kohli has amassed the lion's share of his 12,898 runs, which include 39 hundreds, batting at number three in 212 of his 275 innings. In his 42 appearances at number four, Kohli averaged 55.21, slightly below his overall 57.32, and has scored seven hundreds. Shastri, who was coach of the India team when Kohli was captain, and lost to New Zealand in the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup, said those were impressive numbers for a number four batter. Shastri said during the 2019 World Cup, he considered changing Kohli's place "just to break that top heavy line-up".

Inflation has "started to abate" but the Fed will remain focused on returning it to the 2% target, Fed governor and vice chair nominee Philip Jefferson said in testimony prepared for his confirmation hearing on Wednesday before the Senate Banking Committee. "The economy faces multiple challenges, including inflation, banking-sector stress, and geopolitical instability. "Inflation has started to abate, and I remain focused on returning it to our 2% target." As a group, Fed policymakers last week signaled two more interest-rate hikes are likely by the end of the year. The Senate Banking committee on Tuesday also released prepared remarks from Fed Board nominee Adriana Kugler, who said returning inflation to the central bank's 2% target is key to setting a strong foundation for the U.S. economy.

Arsenal win 2-0 at Newcastle to stay in title hunt
  + stars: | 2023-05-07 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
NEWCASTLE, England, May 7 (Reuters) - Arsenal showed no sign of raising the white flag in the Premier League title race with a 2-0 victory at Newcastle United on Sunday to close the gap on leaders Manchester City to one point. Newcastle stay third on 65 but Manchester United could overtake them later on Sunday if they win at West Ham United and Liverpool will sense some anxiety as they continue to chase. They also had the bitter memory of a 2-0 defeat at Newcastle a year ago that scuppered their top-four hopes. But this Arsenal side, despite the recent wobbles that have cost them top spot, are made of much sterner stuff. Pope came to Newcastle's rescue again in stoppage time at the end of a frenetic first half, keeping out Odegaard's shot with his legs after the Norwegian looked favourite to score.
Investors have mostly yawned at lower inflation data this week, keeping stocks range-bound. Strategists at the asset management arms of Goldman Sachs and UBS are signaling caution. The message from markets is clear: lower inflation isn't necessarily a green light for stocks. Strategists at UBS Global Wealth Management (GWM) and Goldman Sachs Asset Management issued even sterner warnings, with neither seeing much upside for stocks in the foreseeable future. Goldman Sachs Asset Management is also bullish on long-duration assets while the economy weakens, especially compared to riskier high-yield bonds.
New York CNN —Corporate guidance statements will be front and center as earnings season kicks off, with investors trying to gauge the economy’s temperature. Analysts forecast that first-quarter earnings for companies in the S&P 500 will fall 6.8% from the same period the previous year, according to FactSet. “We all expect earnings to be less than stellar,” says Shana Sissel, chief executive officer at Banríon Capital Management. Earnings season for banks starts on Friday with JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, BlackRock, Citigroup and PNC Financial Services slated to report before the bell. Still, earnings are just one factor driving markets, and inflation remains a key concern for the Fed.

[1/2] The logo of technology company Nvidia is seen at its headquarters in Santa Clara, California February 11, 2015. Its CEO Jensen Huang said use of its chips to power AI had "gone through the roof in the last 60 days." The Federal Reserve at least seems keen on the higher-for-longer message that's shaken world stock and bond markets this week. And as the minutes pre-date red-hot jobs and retail data for January, the message from Fed officials is probably even sterner now. A Reuters poll of equity analysts showed global stock markets are expected to correct in the next three months.
US stocks finish Tuesday's choppy session on a mixed note. January headline inflation cooled to 6.2% but the rate was higher than anticipated. Core CPI, which strips out energy and food prices, rose 0.4% for the month. "The journey to get to normal inflation rates will be a bumpy ride as energy and commodity prices should rebound with China dropping its zero COVID policies." A ninth straight rate hike is likely to arrive in March.
With a majority of S & P 500 companies having posted their quarterly results, investors' focus will turn toward inflation and the consumer price index reading in the upcoming week. The three major indexes are on pace to end the week down, with the S & P 500 poised to post its worst performance since December. Sharp declines for Alphabet , which is off by more than 9% this week, dragged the tech-heavy index. January's consumer price index With the latest Powell speech in the books, investors are now looking ahead to the consumer price index for insight into the pace of inflation. "Retail sales and CPI is really driven by the consumer, and a lot of eyes are on how the consumer doing," Bruno said.

Some, such as Belgium and Greece, as well as Hungary which still relies heavily on Russian energy imports, pushed back against further sweeping measures, EU diplomats told Reuters. Russia says sanctions have boomeranged against the West, driving up inflation as energy prices have rocketed higher. Meanwhile, existing EU measures are not always watertight. Others are more discrete, while some have half an eye on a future relationship with Russia after the war ends. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said this month that the EU would "tighten the sanctions against Russia for as long as Putin continues his war".
Just because rural areas are less populated doesn’t mean it’s cheaper to provide health services there. CNN —Brazil danced its way past South Korea and into the World Cup quarterfinals on Monday, sweeping aside its opponent 4-1 in a dazzling performance at Qatar 2022. DOHA, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Having lost twice to Denmark recently, France will be taking nothing for granted when they look to secure their qualification for the knockout stages with a game to spare in Group D on Saturday. The defending champions entered the tournament on the back of a dismal Nations League campaign, during which Denmark beat them 2-1 in Paris and 2-0 in Copenhagen. "I've said on a number of occasions that they are underrated as a team. We're talking about just a four-month period, we're not talking about a long period, it's between June and September where they beat us twice," France captain and keeper Hugo Lloris told a news conference on Friday. France started the Qatar tournament in style with a 4-1 win against Australia, but Denmark will be a sterner test at the 974 Stadium.
