The team around Trump is hollowed out, with the White House counsel's office not drawing up a legal defense plan and the legislative affairs team largely abandoned. WASHINGTON (AP) — His place in the history books about to be rewritten, President Donald Trump awaited his second impeachment — something no other president has faced — largely alone and silent. Trump kept out of sight in a nearly empty White House as impeachment proceedings played out at the heavily fortified Capitol. There were lawyers, White House messaging meetings, and a media blitz run by allies on conservative television, radio and websites. But there was no effort from the White House to line up votes in the president's defense.

Three people, including a sheriff's deputy, were injured Saturday in a shootout at a Walmart in Virginia, authorities said. The deputy, who was not identified, and two Walmart security employees were hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman said at a news conference. He was hospitalized because he was struck in the shootout, sheriff's officials said. Deputies chased him, and law enforcement officers from other agencies, including the Virginia State Police, assisted, sheriff's officials said. The man was ultimately found after he "crashed" the truck, and he was taken into custody before being hospitalized, sheriff's officials said.

President Donald Trump speaking in a released video on Twitter on Dec. 31st, 2020. And, on Thursday, the last day of the month and the year, Trump tweeted a video in which he boasted about his administration's response to the pandemic. "We're doing numbers now like nobody's ever seen before, including having the highest stock market in the history of the world," Trump said, adding "the best is yet to come" in his sign off. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. President Donald Trump golfs at Trump National Golf Club on November 21, 2020 in Sterling, Virginia.

President Donald Trump has promised to veto this year's National Defense Authorization Act, an annual bill that funds the military and that has been passed for 59 straight years. Priced at about $741 billion and thousands of pages long, the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act has a little holiday cheer for everyone inside Washington's Beltway. All that, however, is nothing compared to the biggest change the defense spending bill would bring for the future of national security. Trump golfs at Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia, on November 21, 2020. Trump's claims that he is holding up the defense bill in order to rein in the outsized power of Big Tech are flimsy at best, and the president's act is far from convincing.

There is growing speculation that President Donald Trump could decide to issue himself a presidential pardon before leaving office in January, as a way to shield himself from future prosecution. In time-honored style, President Donald Trump spent Thanksgiving Eve taking part in the annual presidential turkey pardoning ceremony in the White House Rose Garden. On Wednesday, the president retweeted a post from GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz, which said: "President Trump should pardon Flynn, the Thanksgiving turkey, and everyone from himself, to his admin, to Joe Exotic if he has to." But the presidential pardoning power only applies to federal crimes, so would not apply to any of the nine lawsuits currently being pursued. Ultimately, the fact that a self-pardon is an option being seriously discussed highlights the legal problems that Trump could face when he leaves office.

REUTERS/Joshua RobertsWASHINGTON (Reuters) - More prominent Republicans on Monday joined the call for President Donald Trump to end efforts to overturn his election defeat and allow President-elect Joe Biden to begin the formal transition to a new administration. Twenty days after Election Day, most members of Trump’s party still refused on Monday to refer to Biden as president-elect, or to question Trump’s insistence - without evidence - that he had only lost on Nov. 3 because of fraud. Republican Senator Rob Portman - co-chairman of Trump’s campaign in Ohio who rarely breaks with party leaders - said there was no evidence of widespread election fraud and called for the transition to begin. “It is now time to expeditiously resolve any outstanding questions and move forward,” Portman wrote in a Cincinnati Enquirer opinion column on Monday.

Trump participated briefly in the opening ceremonies of the virtual summit hosted by Saudi Arabia with the rest of the G-20 leaders. The president later went to his golf course, Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia, where he's spent the last several weekends since the election. It was not clear for most of the week if Trump would even attend the final G-20 summit before he leaves office. The campaign and Trump supporters have filed a flurry of lawsuits in multiple states challenging the Nov. 3 election but have yet to overturn any votes. Pennsylvania has been a fixture of those efforts and any hope of reversing the election hangs on outcome in the state. On Monday, three lawyers representing the Trump campaign asked to withdraw from the case, saying the campaign had consented but offering little explanation. Biden clinched the election with his victory in Pennsylvania, putting him over the 270 electoral votes needed to win. In the Pennsylvania case, the Trump campaign alleges Democratic-leaning counties unlawfully identified mail-in ballots before Election Day that had defects so that voters could fix, or “cure,” them.
