JOHANNESBURG—South Africans this week rallied around their government’s decision to take Israel to the International Court of Justice for alleged genocide in the Gaza Strip, with many saying they were motivated by their own country’s struggle against apartheid. Its case at the United Nations court in The Hague, Netherlands, has drawn support from many human-rights organizations and other developed countries. South Africa is asking the ICJ to issue provisional orders for a cease-fire in Gaza while proceedings on the genocide claim, likely to take years, move forward.

The gunmen arrived on motorcycles and in the backs of Toyota pickups, brandishing Kalashnikovs and dressed in the telltale sand-colored uniforms of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces militia. Over three days they killed hundreds of men and teenage boys in a Darfur refugee camp, according to witnesses, local human-rights groups and international aid agencies. The Sudanese-Arab militia worked its way systematically through the tents, shacks and mud houses of the Ardamata camp, shooting male residents. The settlement in western Darfur was home to about 30,000 non-Arab Sudanese people who had fled earlier bouts of fighting in the country’s civil war, which started nearly seven months ago.

Landing feet first on the ground, Mnqandi felt his right leg crack. His son seemed OK, and there was his wife, dazed, but alive. But there was no sign of his stepdaughter, Melita. The 16-year-old had turned back to fetch some blankets to use as ropes to shorten the terrifying distance to the bottom.

The peer-reviewed study, published this past week in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, found in the boars high levels of radiation that the researchers believe come from nuclear weapons tests in the atmosphere carried out long before the Chernobyl meltdown. It also answers a question that has stumped researchers and hunters: Why is the radiation in the wild boar population relatively high, when most other wildlife are uncontaminated, many generations after the accident? (Spoiler: It’s because they eat deer truffles.) The findings were so unexpected that when Georg Steinhauser, the paper’s lead researcher, and a colleague first saw the results, they thought there had been a mistake. “That can’t be right — that’s not possible,” Professor Steinhauser recalled his colleague exclaiming.

A high percentage of Germany's wild boars are radioactive while other animals in the region are not. But fallout from nuclear weapons tests decades ago may also have contaminated the truffles, according to a new study published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe trouble with trufflesThe likely culprit is the deer truffle, which grows underground and accumulates radioactive cesium. Wild boars root them out, especially during the colder months when other food sources are scarce. AdvertisementAdvertisementDeer truffles that are over a foot underground that nuclear weapons previously contaminated are now absorbing cesium from Chernobyl.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Saturday that the military coup in Niger jeopardized U.S. aid and security support worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The European Union also suspended security cooperation and financial support with Niger. Photo: Darren England/ShutterstockThe European Union on Saturday froze some of its aid to Niger, and the U.S. said its assistance was in jeopardy following this week’s coup in the West African country, which has been a close Western ally in the fight against Islamist militants and Russian encroachment in the region.
