NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. labor unions are once again flexing the muscles in the national spotlight. UNION RATES HAVE BEEN FALLING FOR DECADES. Only 6% of U.S. private-sector workers belong to unions today, a sliver of the 35% that were union members in 1953. The National Labor Relations Act of 1935 granted private-sector employees the right to unionize. That means that what worked in auto workers' labor campaign, for example, may not be possible for other industries.

The US is heavily reliant on Russia's cheap nuclear fuel to produce emissions-free energy. Russia's nuclear agency has been running Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant since its capture from Ukraine. The money for enriched uranium is received by subsidiaries of Rosatom, Russia's state-owned nuclear agency, which has been running Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant since its forceful capture in March 2022. US companies spent about $1 billion in 2022 buying nuclear fuel from Rosatom, The New York Times reported. According to The New York Times, around a third of enriched uranium used in the US is now imported from Russia.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll has a margin of error of three percentage points either way. Biden will also call on the U.S. Congress to focus on advancing cancer research, expanding mental health services and beating the "opioid and overdose epidemic," the White House said. But the new Reuters/Ipsos poll showed many Americans are uncomfortable with Washington's large debts. Despite Biden's unpopularity, the poll showed that Americans prefer Democrats over Republicans on a range of issues. The Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted throughout the United States, gathered responses from 1,029 adults, using a nationally representative sample.

WASHINGTON, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Republican U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, locked in a standoff with Democratic President Joe Biden over raising the nation's $31.4 trillion debt ceiling, plans to address the issue on Monday ahead of Biden's annual State of Union address. McCarthy, who has said he expects to meet with Biden a second time after sitting down with the president at the White House last week, plans to speak at 5:30 p.m. (2230 GMT) from his office in the House of Representatives. The timing would allow him to get out in front of Biden on the debt ceiling, while reinforcing McCarthy's role as the leading congressional negotiator in talks with the White House, according to a person familiar with the matter. Despite what appears to be a standoff, McCarthy emerged from a meeting with Biden last week saying he believed the two could find common ground. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that the White House had been in touch with McCarthy's staff on next steps.
Biden turned 80 in November and, if re-elected, would be 82 at the start of a second term. House Republicans also are poised to pursue various investigations involving the president, his family and administration. Other matters that Congress could address in 2023 include legislation expected to be needed midyear to raise the federal government's borrowing authority, or debt limit. Conservative House Republicans are showcasing legislation to undo beefed-up funding for the Internal Revenue Service so that it can hire more agents to clamp down on wealthy tax cheats. Biden is fresh off a trip to the U.S.-Mexican border, where the influx of immigrants has Republicans eager to legislate tougher security measures.
