In the vast majority of independent surveys in New Mexico, Virginia and New Hampshire in recent weeks, Trump has trailed by more than 5 points. A second Trump campaign official who was granted anonymity to speak freely said that if it is going to a state, it’s because the campaign sees movement there. Since 2020, states like Arizona have shown rightward movement that potentially bodes well for Trump, Blair said. Trump doesn't have time to waste at this stage of the race, the second campaign official said. Both spoke at Trump's New York rally, and Gabbard joined Trump days earlier in North Carolina, a swing state.

It roughly doubled the standard deduction, adjusted the individual income tax brackets and lowered most of the rates. The legislation also applied a $10,000 cap on the state and local tax deduction, and it roughly doubled the estate tax exemption (it now sits at $13.61 million for an individual). In certain cases, it may also make sense to harvest capital gains, Bigge said. Gain harvesting, just like loss harvesting, is for your taxable account. Trump's plans could mean tax hikes for lower earners; Harris' proposals would target higher earners. This is the fourth in a five-part series about the impacts either a Trump or a Harris presidency could have on US consumers. Trump has proposed extending his slew of tax cuts from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 — also known as the "Trump tax cut." But another part of Trump's tax policy — his plan to levy universal tariffs on all US imports — could end up undercutting this positive impact. Retirees have been spending big thanks to recent gains in Social Security income, Bank of America said. But annual payment increases are falling behind workers' wage growth, the note said. Some economists have said baby boomer spending helped ward off a recession in recent years. Bank of America said retired consumers enjoyed greater spending power in the past two years as Social Security income got a boost. AdvertisementThe trouble with weaker spending among baby boomers is that the generation's willingness to splurge has been credited with helping the US avoid a recession in recent years.

In fact, the state polls are showing not just an astonishingly tight race, but also an improbably tight race. Imagine if pollsters in this world conducted 100 identical surveys of 863 randomly selected voters (that’s the average sample size of this year’s swing state polls). Actual swing state polls show far less variation than the benchmarks we would expect in a perfect polling world. Visualizing how the reported polling margins compare to what we would expect in a perfect polling world strongly suggests “herding” of swing state polling margins around the statewide polling averages. The pattern is especially pronounced in Pennsylvania, where a huge share of the public polls have showed a tied race.

Five people have been charged in Texas, accused of organizing and participating in an illegal cheating scheme that certified more than 200 unqualified teachers and saw the plot’s “kingpin” rake in more than $1 million, prosecutors announced. Investigators noticed a pattern: Numerous teacher certification candidates who previously failed certification exams would drive from faraway Texas cities to the Houston area to take an exam. Then a tip came in that exposed the cheating scheme. He'd pay her about 20% of the $2,500 to allow the cheating, Levine said. “They are going to go over every teacher, I’m sure, and take whatever action they see fit if they believe someone fraudulently obtained a certification,” Levine said.

SHANGHAI — ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming is China’s richest person, with personal wealth of $49.3 billion, an annual rich list showed Tuesday, although counterparts in real estate and renewables have fared less well. Zhang, 41, who stepped down in 2021 as chief executive of ByteDance, the Beijing-based parent company of TikTok, becomes the 18th individual to be crowned China’s richest person in the 26 years since the Hurun China Rich List was first published. He overtook bottled water magnate Zhong Shanshan, who slipped to second place as his fortune dropped 24%, to $47.9 billion. Despite a legal battle over its U.S. assets, ByteDance’s global revenue grew 30% last year to $110 billion, Hurun said, helping to propel Zhang’s personal fortune. The number of billionaires on the list dropped by 142 to 753, shrinking more than a third from its 2021 peak.

The move could prompt legal challenges, as a similar policy did in the first Trump administration. To pressure local law enforcement agencies to cooperate, the Trump team would cut off their access to Justice Department grants, the three sources said. After an appeals court sided with the Trump administration, the Democratic-controlled states appealed to the Supreme Court. And that legal maneuver, in essence, ran out the clock on the first Trump administration. Vitiello said a second Trump administration would also offer additional funding to state and local police departments that participate in the mass deportations.

For many families, child care is often the biggest. Thanks to a state program launched during the recovery from the pandemic, they pay nothing for child care. Vice President Kamala Harris proposes capping child care costs at 7% of working families’ incomes, along with an up-to-$6,000 expanded child tax credit for those with newborns. The permanent fund now funnels more than $150 million from fossil fuel producers into child care subsidies, state officials estimate. As elder care costs continue to outpace inflation, the Democratic ticket sees that constituency as key to victory.

From 2008 through 2020, the winning candidate either swept or nearly swept the final six to eight battleground states. Are we still under-sampling Trump voters? Then again, is Trump’s improvement in the polls this cycle an indication the polling community finally got it right on the Trump vote? In 2020, the Trump campaign was the only one knocking on doors during Covid, as the Biden campaign feared scaring its supporters at the doors. The Harris campaign appears invested in doing traditional get-out-the-vote programs in all sorts of places.

The shooting victim was released from the hospital Saturday afternoon, according to Debra Silverstein, the alderman for Chicago’s 50th Ward, where the shooting occurred. Hate crime charges still a question markAs some Jewish leaders call for hate crime charges, police say they still need to interview the suspect and collect evidence before considering such charges. On Monday, Silverstein said she was upset with the lack of hate crime charges in the case. “The police have assured me that they are continuing to gather evidence, and additional charges – including hate crime charges – can still be added,” Silverstein said. Shoshanah Conover, Senior Rabbi of Temple Sholom also said the community is frustrated with the lack of hate crime charges.

The outcome of this year's presidential election could bode well for different parts of the stock market, according to Evercore ISI. "Trump will be positive for US-only retailers (which have higher tax rates vs retailers with int'l exposure)," Evercore ISI said. Under a Harris win, these stocks could benefit, per Evercore ISI: Evercore ISI forecasts Harris winners to be renewable energy and EV companies, as that administration is expected to maintain the Inflation Reduction Act and other clean energy policies. Discount retailers such as Burlington and Ross Stores are another likely beneficiary of a Democratic win, according to Evercore ISI. A slew of tech companies, namely Apple , Dell and Hewlett Packard Enterprise , could fare well with a Harris win given the risk of lower tariffs.

CNN —Michigan prosecutors charged a Chinese citizen with voter fraud and perjury after he allegedly cast a ballot in the 2024 election, authorities announced Wednesday. Authorities said the man isn’t a US citizen, and therefore can’t vote in federal elections. Experts say illegal voting by non-citizens is extremely rare, and when it does happen, it is usually caught quickly. Authorities did not identify the Chinese student accused of voting in the election. Washtenaw County Clerk Lawrence Kestenbaum told CNN ballots can’t be retrieved once they have gone through the tabulator.

A Chicago man has been charged with 14 felonies after allegedly shooting a Jewish man who was on his way to a local synagogue. But some community leaders are questioning why hate crime charges have not been filed. Snelling said that there wasn't enough evidence to add hate crime charges to the list but said it remained a possibility. "A man wearing the kippah as he walked to synagogue was shot and this has just escalated our anxieties." But I think it’s equally important to understand that whether or not there is a hate crime charge, that’s a technicality.

But state officials resisted his pressure, judges tossed out his team’s lawsuits, and Pence defied Trump and carried out his constitutional duty to affirm the result of the vote. If Trump sought to challenge the election results, he would have two potential paths to try to overturn the results, and both routes are “long shots,” said Hasen, director of the Safeguarding Democracy Project at UCLA Law School. Given the heightened security risk, some state officials have made plans to scrap public, high-profile ceremonies to certify election results in state capitols. Election officials across the country also have bolstered security at polling places, including expanding police presence and issuing bulletproof vests to election workers. State officials resisted.

Casey’s Senate website dedicates an entire page to “greedflation,” which he also discussed at length in his speech at the Democratic National Convention this summer. CNN —A federal judge on Tuesday tossed out a Republican lawsuit that sought to segregate overseas ballots in Pennsylvania for additional vetting. The overseas vote has long been viewed as sacrosanct because of its connection to the military vote, and the Pennsylvania lawsuit – which would have jeopardized the ballots of service people abroad – drew a sharp backlash. He cited other procedural issues with Republicans’ lawsuit as well. In the Pennsylvania case, the Republicans were arguing that election officials should take additional steps to verify ballots cast in the state from overseas voters.
