New York CNN —For the first time in its 42-year history, the women’s NCAA basketball final outrated the men’s. On Monday, the University of Connecticut’s victory over Purdue in the men’s final drew 14.8 million viewers, Nielsen said. That was up a smidge from the 14.7 million who watched last year’s men’s championship game, but fell 4 million viewers short of the women’s final. To put the women’s championship game viewership in perspective, it outrated every 2023 World Series game and every NBA finals game from last year, according to Nielsen. Opinion: Nikki Haley is ready for her closeup

Nikki Haley is instructive. But nowhere does it talk in depth about policy or what the Koch brothers’ organization represents within the Republican coalition. What makes Haley interesting in this race is not, in fact, her position in the polls but her position in the party. Haley was, after all, Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations, an interesting position for someone who so sharply diverges from Trump’s ostensibly non-interventionist foreign policy. Or maybe it’s Haley, the standard-bearer for a more inclusive Republican Party, defined by her identities as a woman and Indian-American.

Sage Steele and ESPN have parted ways. "ESPN and Sage Steele have mutually agreed to part ways," an ESPN spokesman said Tuesday. During the Sept. 2021 podcast, Sage said she had been vaccinated against Covid but referred to the company's vaccine mandate as "sick." Steele is the daughter of Gary Steele, the first Black football player at West Point, and Mona Steele, a white woman. During the same podcast, Steele also suggested that women who wear provocative clothes in the workplace bear responsibility for sexism they may experience.

CNN —Prominent ESPN “SportsCenter” anchor Sage Steele, who sparked controversy over her comments about vaccine mandates, female sports reporters, and former President Barack Obama’s racial identity, has left the network after settling a lawsuit. Steele, who joined ESPN in 2007, was removed from the network’s air in 2021 after her comments on political and social issues drew criticism. “ESPN and Sage Steele have mutually agreed to part ways. We thank her for her many contributions over the years,” the network said Tuesday. A person familiar with the matter said the network had been in mediation with Steele prior to her departure.

But that plan carries serious risk, as it would jeopardize still-sizable cable revenue without guaranteeing that enough sports fans would support such a product. Several other analysts — including Barton Crockett of Rosenblatt Securities, who has a buy rating for Disney shares — seconded those concerns about cannibalizing cable revenue. Nollen estimated 35 million current cable customers would switch to ESPN DTC. ESPN DTC is zero incremental cost and potentially billions in incremental revenue." An ESPN streamer (in light purple) would gradually drive revenue for Disney, Wells Fargo predicts.

Arraez, a Venezuelan who is 5 feet 10 inches, is chasing more than a match of Williams, who finished that ’41 season with a .406 average. In 1947, Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color line, which had been in place since the 19th century. No player has ever finished a season batting at or above .400 since Major League Baseball became an integrated game. Consider the ancient Greeks. And just as we are today, the ancient Greeks were obsessed with reputation.

CNN —Jamie Foxx was hospitalized weeks ago but there’s still not much publicly known. Anyone who has followed Jamie Foxx’s career closely, however, shouldn’t be surprised by that. There has been practically no information released other than his family initially asking for privacy and a post last week on Foxx’s verified social media account. Foxx and Holmes reportedly split in 2019. So the silence surrounding Foxx’s “medical complication,” to use his family’s words initially, seems in keeping with how the performer conducts himself.
[1/2] Feb 9, 2023; Phoenix, Arizona, US; Sports commentator Rich Eisen poses for a photo on the red carpet before the NFL Honors award show at Symphony Hall. “I hung up the phone and became the owner of my own business,” Eisen recalls about buying back his show from DirecTV, which was shuttering its Audience Network. This year’s edition will kick off April 27 in Kansas City, Missouri, and Eisen will be assuming hosting duties once again. But when he thinks about his financial life, Eisen does not focus much on areas like stock picking. When I first got that call, I didn’t have the first clue about how to run a business," Eisen says.
Twitter will charge businesses $1,000 per month for the gold "Verified Organizations" check. Twitter also announced Thursday that it will begin removing "legacy" verified checks April 1. Twitter announced the policy Thursday night alongside its plan to begin removing "legacy" verified blue checks starting April 1, meaning only Twitter Blue subscribers will be verified starting next month. Musk has repeatedly criticized the way the verified checks were given to public figures, politicians, and journalists and said the system was "corrupt." Twitter currently offers gold checks to verified businesses, and also allows them to place a small, hyperlinked version of their logo next to the gold check of other pages associated with their business.
Social media consultant Matt Navarra first reported that Twitter is reaching out to businesses about the plan. Twitter currently offers gold checks to verified businesses, and also allows them to place a small, hyperlinked version of their logo next to the gold check of other pages associated with their business. In addition to the $1,000 per month for a business account, Twitter plans to charge $50 each for the affiliated accounts, according to The Information's Erin Woo. The plan was relaunched in December, when the gold checks were first introduced as an added layer of distinction between verified businesses and individuals who had just paid $8 for the blue check. Last month, Musk also advertised a yet-to-be-released subscription service for Twitter that would allow users to access the site without ads.

And suddenly it’s not.”Those were the salient words of “SportsCenter” host Scott Van Pelt Monday night after Damar Hamlin suddenly collapsed on the field during the high stakes Bills-Bengals game. Within moments, Van Pelt knew that the injury was very different than those normally sustained on the football field. And I was scared.”Later in the evening, after Joe Buck and Troy Aikman concluded their broadcast, hosting duties fell to Van Pelt. “I don’t work for a news network that covers traumatic events when they happen,” Van Pelt noted to me. “My personal preference was that I didn’t want to bring in a physician to speculate,” Van Pelt told me.
The massive audience makes it the most-watched “Monday Night Football” broadcast since the NFL moved the series to ESPN in 2006, surpassing the previous record of 21.8 million viewers for a Packers-Vikings game in 2009. Monday’s high-profile game, however, was suspended when Hamlin collapsed in the first quarter just moments after an open field tackle of Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. During game play, ESPN averaged 21.1 million viewers, according to Nielsen ratings. That audience then grew to 23.9 million viewers between 9 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. when ESPN aired news coverage of Hamlin’s collapse. But I just didn’t want to be speculating.”Before Hamlin’s devastating injury, the game was expected to be among the most-viewed Monday Night Football games in ESPN’s history.
Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant is expected to get the next Nike signature shoe. "When his signature shoe starts selling, it has the potential to be what Kyrie's was the first three years." Still, Burns noted Nike basketball is on the upswing, and Morant has a strong reputation. The shoe is nearly sold out on Nike's website, suggesting strong demand for performance basketball shoes and room in the market for a new signature shoe. "Nike basketball has rebounded," Burns said, citing the popularity of the GT Cut.
Omar Raja joined ESPN in 2020 and is the face of the "SportsCenter" Instagram account. ESPN averages more than 400 social posts a day and has focused more on TikTok recently. Raja, 28, honed his craft as a teenager compiling "Call of Duty" clips on YouTube and, more famously, by creating the basketball-focused Instagram account House of Highlights. Raja is the face of the account — the bio reads, "I'm @Omar and this is SportsCenter!" Raja has helped grow the "SportsCenter" presence on Instagram to 32 million followers, from about 15.4 million when he started.

NEW YORK, Sept 23 (Reuters Breakingviews) - When it comes to modern corporate sagas, few deliver the drama between Walt Disney (DIS.N) and Comcast (CMCSA.O). Comcast Chief Executive Brian Roberts is in position to let his counterpart squirm, but there’s a neat solution to help settle the score: ESPN. He feared Comcast “would have paid more later.”Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com RegisterBefore long, Comcast clashed again with Disney. To settle the matter, the two parent companies agreed that in January 2024 Comcast could force Disney to buy its stake or Disney could require Comcast to sell based on a minimum valuation of $27.5 billion. Disney owns two-thirds of Hulu and Comcast owns the rest.
