It was the upstart athletic brand that was making real inroads against Nike, the dominant name in the industry. People saw it as a company that actually could break through and take market share from Nike among the hardcore athletes,” Swartz said. String of controversiesThe period from 2016 onward is when “things really started to fall apart” at Under Armour, Swartz said. A bulk of Under Armour products are sold through sporting goods retailers and department stores, including Macy’s and Kohl’s, and online. The basketball superstar Curry, arguably the best shooter in history, famously signed with Under Armour instead of Nike in 2013.

MADRID (AP) — After sullying his nation's Women's World Cup victory, former Spanish soccer president Luis Rubiales will face trial for kissing forward Jenni Hermoso without her consent at the final. State prosecutors accused Rubiales of sexual assault and for allegedly trying to coerce Hermoso to publicly support him in the public backlash against him. The new law eliminated the difference between “sexual harassment” and “sexual assault,” sanctioning any unconsented sexual act. The 46-year-old Rubiales, who also grabbed his crotch in a lewd victory gesture near to Spain’s Queen Letizia and Princess Sofia during the celebrations of Spain’s victory, immediately became a national embarrassment. FIFA banned Rubiales for three years until after the men’s 2026 World Cup.

MADRID (AP) — Some of Spain's World Cup-winning players started reporting to training camp on Tuesday despite not wanting to be called up for the national team while fighting for changes in the soccer federation. It was the latest embarrassing chapter in Spanish soccer in a crisis ignited by former federation president Luis Rubiales kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips after Spain won the Women's World Cup last month. Tomé left Hermoso off the list “as a way to protect her,” she said. On Monday, the federation released a statement in which it publicly reiterated to the players its commitment to structural changes. Tomé, an assistant to Vilda at the World Cup, included in her first list some of the players who rebelled.

[1/4] Amateur players take part in a competition of guandan, a poker-like card game, in Beijing, China August 13, 2023. Total U.S.-based venture-capital investment in China plummeted to $9.7 billion last year from $32.9 billion in 2021, PitchBook data shows. "In finance, information is currency," said Yang, for whom a game of guandan has become a standard gambit before wining and dining local officials. Yu Longze, a broker based in Beijing, said his boss this month ordered all staff to learn the game. In April, the ruling Communist Party's anti-graft watchdog censured one of its officials in the eastern province of Anhui for playing guandan during a training course, among other misdeeds.

The Dahiyas, along with nine female wrestlers and their parents to whom Reuters spoke, were determined that none of the young women would give up the sport, however. Instead, they are setting their eyes on WFI elections set for July to achieve their demand for reforms of a system that provides guidance to more than 53,000 young female wrestlers. "I can assure you that every girl will feel protected and we are working towards addressing all the concerns raised by female wrestlers," Sports Minister Anurag Thakur told Reuters. Yet in Haryana, home to more than 5,000 large and small wrestling schools with a history of turning out some of India's top female athletes, women wrestlers expressed dismay.

MELBOURNE, June 16 (Reuters) - Australia's peak sports authority has recommended testosterone limits for transgender athletes seeking to compete in elite female competitions as part of guidelines on inclusion released on Friday. The 'Transgender & Gender-Diverse Inclusion Guidelines for HP (high-performance) Sport' recommends transgender athletes have plasma testosterone levels of less than 2.5 nanomoles per litre for two years prior to competition. Transgender inclusion in female competition has become one of the most contentious and divisive issues in sport. Australia's guidelines come months after the national basketball federation rejected a transgender athlete's application to play in a semi-professional league, drawing criticism from LGBTI groups. Eligibility requirements for transgender athletes in elite female competition vary broadly in Australian sports.

MILAN, April 20 (Reuters) - Italy's top sports body on Thursday cancelled a decision to dock Serie A club Juventus (JUVE.MI) 15 points in a case centered on the club's transfer dealings, ordering soccer authorities to hold another hearing. The ruling of Italy's Sports Guarantee Board came after Juventus, the most successful soccer club in Italy, appealed a sentence Italy's soccer court issued in January as it looked at the way the club and a number of other teams dealt with player exchange deals. The soccer court had also imposed bans from holding office in Italian soccer on 11 past and present Juventus directors, including former Chairman Andrea Agnelli, a prominent member of the family controlling Juventus through their investment company Exor (EXOR.AS). Partially accepting the Juventus appeal, the Sports Guarantee Board did not clear the club of wrongdoing. It instead ruled that a soccer court made up of different judges should now hold new proceedings against Juventus and the directors and come up with more appropriate punishment.
New York CNN —Bed Bath & Beyond is stripping down its big blue signs, clearing out aisles of linens and closing 400 stores as it tries to stave off bankruptcy. Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY)’s real estate is a precious, scarce resource for retailers, gyms and anyone else who needs ample space. “A lot of great real estate is going to come available into a market where there’s been no vacancies. “Bed Bath and Beyond sites are interesting to us, and we are exploring available opportunities with our franchisees,” a spokesperson told CNN. He also believes Bed Bath & Beyond may not be able to avoid bankruptcy or liquidation, which would lead to more vacancies.
The most significant player in the space, Dick's Sporting Goods, controls an estimated 14.2% of the market, the most by a single company. Dick's Sporting Goods was founded in 1948 by 18-year-old Dick Stack who had just $300 in his pocket when he opened his first store. In the 1990s, the company expanded its offerings to include more sports, outdoor equipment, apparel and footwear, and by 1996, there were 50 Dick's Sporting Goods stores. While Dick's Sporting Goods was expanding, its archrival Sports Authority was on the verge of collapse. Dick's Sporting Goods' momentum continued well into 2021 as the company set new records.
Here’s how Bed Bath & Beyond, once a retailer pioneer, veered to the edge of bankruptcy and where it turns next. Brands coveted a spot on Bed Bath & Beyond’s shelves, knowing it would lead to big sales. Discount chains such as HomeGoods and TJ Maxx and have also undercut Bed Bath & Beyond’s prices. Without the differentiators of the lowest prices or widest selection, Bed Bath & Beyond’s sales stagnated from 2012 to 2019. Otherwise, too much of Bed Bath & Beyond’s revenue will go toward repaying debt that it won’t be able to turn a profit.
These tax exemptions help lower the burden of high debt through low-interest municipal bonds used by cities and teams to pay for stadiums. Since 1913, municipal bonds have been a popular financing option for airports, roads, hospitals and schools. The loophole works by creating an artificial financing structure through tax-exempt municipal bonds. To gain access to those bonds, private companies must fail one of two tests stipulated by the Tax Reform Bill of 1986. The Las Vegas Stadium Authority financed nearly 40% of the stadium through $750 million in bonds backed by its hotel taxes.
Over the past two years, however, Bed Bath has tested vendor relationships by making late payments, pushing aggressively into private labels and losing shoppers. Those tensions have intensified as financial troubles mounted, according to the former Bed Bath executives.
