New York CNN —Spirit Airlines, the ultra-low cost carrier known for charging bargain-hunting passengers for anything and everything, is introducing business class seating. Farther back in the plane Spirit will also allow passengers to pay more for seats in rows where the middle seat will not be sold. Spirit looked at merging, first with another ultra low cost carrier, Frontier Airlines, and then with JetBlue Airways. Last week Southwest Airlines, the nation’s older lower fare carrier, announced it would end its open seating policy it has used throughout its history and let passengers reserve seats for the first time. However, Southwest has not announced any plans to offer wider, business class seats.

Boeing said on Monday that it had agreed to buy a major supplier, Spirit AeroSystems, ending a nearly two-decade experiment in outsourcing production of major components of its commercial planes, including the body of the 737 Max and parts of the 767, 777 and 787. In buying Spirit, Boeing hopes to stem quality problems that have plagued the supplier in recent years. While it already has significant influence over Spirit, Boeing will more easily be able to monitor and change production practices by owning the business outright. The deal, which was widely expected, was valued at $4.7 billion in stock or $8.3 billion including Spirit’s debt. Boeing said its acquisition of Spirit is expected to close by the middle of next year.

New York CNN —Boeing has agreed to buy Spirit Aerosystems, one of its major suppliers and manufacturing partners, as part of its plan to overhaul the aircraft maker’s badly damaged safety reputation. Boeing in March announced its intention to buy Spirit, saying recombining the companies would boost safety. Spirit AeroSystems makes major parts of several Boeing models, including the fuselages for the 737 Max. The company also makes parts for Boeing’s rival Airbus, although Boeing is Spirit’s largest customer. The first group of employees removed the door plug to address problems with rivets that were made by Spirit AeroSystems.

Boeing said it had previously investigated Cuevas’ allegations and they did not pose a safety problem. Cuevas said he filed a complaint with Boeing’s ethics hotline, reporting to management that he believed Spirit was hiding the issues from Boeing. He also alleges that Boeing opened an investigation into Cuevas’ concerns in October 2023, alerting Spirit management to the complaints. A separate report found “gaps” in Boeing’s safety culture, including a disconnect between management and employees, and fears among employees about retaliation for reporting safety concerns. Calhoun said Boeing is “far from perfect,” and he acknowledged that the company will not easily regain the public’s trust.

Spirit Airlines furloughs 260 pilots to save money

CNN —Spirit Airlines said on Monday it has reached a deal with Airbus to delay all aircraft deliveries scheduled from the second quarter of 2025 through 2026 and intends to furlough about 260 pilots, as the company looks to save cash. As a result of the deferrals, along with quality issues with engines made by supplier Pratt & Whitney, Spirit is furloughing pilots effective Sept. 1. “[The] aircraft deferrals and pilot furloughs look positive, in terms of helping the carrier to reduce [or] defer some costs. Spirit, which has been losing money for several quarters despite strong travel demand, operates an all-Airbus fleet. Spirit now expects to end 2025 with a total of 219 jets in its fleet, with no additions of the A320neo aircraft.

New York CNN —On St. Patrick’s Day, throwing back an Irish whiskey might taste different than it used to. Flavored whiskey is a $1.5 billion category and accounts for 20% of all US whiskey sales. In the past few years, flavored whiskey sales have outpaced unflavored whiskey, according to Southern Glazer’s distributors. But with younger drinkers gravitating toward punchier flavors, Irish brands “have to be much more flexible than their historical beliefs have been,” he told CNN. Flavors are “a good way to get them into the brand and into the whiskey category, and certainly into Irish whiskey,” Basford said.

CNN —Boeing has not turned over important records to investigators probing the door plug blowout on a 737 Max earlier this year, investigators say. She testified that because of Boeing’s actions, NTSB investigators do not know who on the Boeing assembly line removed and reinstalled the door plug that – months later while the plane was in service carrying passengers – blew out. Homendy said that Boeing has not fully cooperated with the NTSB Board's investigation into Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 door plug incident. The plane flew about 150 commercial flights before the door plug flew off the plane mid-flight on January 5, just over two months ago. NTSB investigators have made multiple visits to Boeing facilities and created a special team to handle requesting and processing documents from Boeing and its key contractor, Spirit AeroSystems.

Boeing said on Friday that it was in talks to acquire Spirit AeroSystems, a struggling supplier that the manufacturer spun out nearly two decades ago and that makes the bodies of the 737 Max jet. In reabsorbing Spirit, Boeing would be seeking to rescue and restructure a troubled but important partner that has been battered by years of losses and quality control problems. Spirit’s problems have also at times limited how fast Boeing can produce Max planes, its most popular commercial jet. Bringing Spirit, one of the company’s key suppliers, back in house would be a significant strategic shift for Boeing, which has long relied on outsourcing to make its planes. Experts say the episode could have been catastrophic had it happened at a higher altitude with passengers moving about the cabin.

The Best Style From the Independent Spirit Awards

“The Independent Spirit Awards, where the dress code is, get dressed,” said John Mulaney during his bit at the 2018 show, which he co-hosted along with comedian Nick Kroll. There are substantial differences between these awards and the rest of the seasonal intake of trophies this time of year — including, for the second year, all acting categories are gender-neutral — but last year “Everything Everywhere All at Once” won best picture awards at both the Oscars and the Indie Spirits. Held in broad daylight in a tent on a beach in Santa Monica, the show has always been presented as the looser, hipper distant cousin of the Oscars — the outfits could also be somewhat described the same way. Due to the time of day it’s held (2 p.m. PST), this is one place during awards season when the industry can kick off their heels, leave the evening gowns at home and show off their casual wares, which has the potential for interesting style choices. Here are some of the best ones.

The discount airline said in the filing that it expects to beat analysts’ expectations for the end of the year. Shares of Spirit fell 47% in trading Tuesday after the court blocked the acquisition by JetBlue and another 22% on Wednesday. Other analysts didn’t predict bankruptcy or liquidation, but still forecast a difficult course for Spirit trying to make it on its own. It put its operating losses between $158 million to $172 million, down from the $178 million operating loss in the third quarter, and better than forecasts of a $197 million loss. Following $1 billion in losses in 2020 and 2021, the company lost $264 million in the first nine months of 2023.

New York CNN —Spirit Airlines could end up in bankruptcy and be forced out of business because of a federal court decision to block a proposed sale to JetBlue Airways, according to a note from an airline analyst. “We believe Spirit will first look for an alternative buyer, but another airline may get the same pushback [from antitrust regulators. Its fares prompted major airlines to offer a certain number of no-frills “basic economy” seats on their planes. It also prompted concerns that its purchase by JetBlue would lead to higher fares across the industry — concerns which resulted in the Justice Department’s antitrust case that blocked the deal. “While we are disappointed with this [court decision] outcome, we are confident in our strengths and strategy,” said a company statement sent to CNN.

A sale to JetBlue represented a lifeline for Spirit, which faces $1.1 billion in debt maturing next year. But a federal judge in Boston scuttled that plan by ruling Tuesday that JetBlue’s $3.8 billion proposal to buy Spirit violates antitrust law. But Frontier has its own challenges and is in no position to renew merger discussions with Spirit now, Baker said. Like Spirit, JetBlue has not had a profitable year since 2019, before the pandemic. Investors are also trying to gauge what the ruling against the JetBlue-Spirit deal means for Alaska Airlines' pending proposal to buy Hawaiian Airlines.

Washington CNN —The US Federal Aviation Administration is expanding its probe into Boeing 737 Max 9 quality control following this month’s in-flight blowout of a part of an Alaska Airlines plane. In a new statement released Wednesday, the FAA says it is now investigating contractor Spirit AeroSystems, which builds the fuselage of the Boeing 737 Max 9. Spirit Aerosystems did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The FAA says all 171 Boeing 737 Max 9s in the United States remain grounded, the agency has received new data from preliminary inspections of 40 of those airplanes. DALLAS (AP) — A federal judge is siding with the Biden administration and blocking JetBlue Airways from buying Spirit Airlines, saying the $3.8 billion deal would reduce competition. The Justice Department sued to block the merger, saying it would drive up fares by eliminating Spirit, the nation’s biggest low-cost airline. Shares of Spirit Airlines Inc. plunged more than half almost immediately, while JetBlue shares gained 8%. Another judge in the same Boston courthouse killed a partnership in the Northeast between JetBlue and American Airlines. Tuesday's ruling could open the door for Frontier Airlines to make another attempt to buy Spirit.

New York CNN —Spirit Airlines shares tanked 52% on Tuesday after a federal judge in Boston ruled against JetBlue’s proposed $3.8 billion acquisition of the discount airline. The Biden administration has argued since taking office there needs to be greater competition between businesses, especially in the airline industry, to lower costs for consumers. “If not blocked, the merger of JetBlue and Spirit would result in higher fares and fewer choices for tens of millions of travelers across the country. The Biden administration has taken a much more aggressive approach in fighting mergers and combinations, including in the airline industry. There is one other merger now being sought in the US airline industry, a proposed $1.9 billion deal to combine Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines.

A Justice Department lawyer argued that the deal would push fares higher by 30% and leave fewer options for travelers on a budget. Duffy, the Justice Department lawyer, tried to close the door on more divestitures. If Spirit is acquired by JetBlue, Frontier would become the biggest discount carrier in the U.S., followed by Allegiant Air and new entrants Breeze and Avelo. The Justice Department has not indicated whether it will challenge that deal. Spirit agreed to merge with Frontier Airlines, which shares its ultra-low-cost business model, but JetBlue beat Frontier in a bidding war.

CNN —Spirit Airlines says its flight schedule could be impacted for days as it scrambles to perform “a necessary inspection of a small section of 25 of our aircraft.”As of 2:45 p.m. EDT, the ultra-low-cost carrier has canceled 98 flights, or 11% of its schedule for Friday, according to flight tracking site FlightAware. The site also showed that Spirit has canceled another 81 flights, or 9% of its schedule, on Saturday. “While this action is being taken out of an abundance of caution, the impact to our network is expected to last several days as we complete the inspections and work to return to normal operations,” Spirit said in a statement. “We apologize for the inconvenience and are working to take care of affected guests.”Spirit has not specified the type of inspections that needs to take place, though FlightAware data shows almost all the cancellations involve Spirit’s Airbus A319 aircraft. Flights departing from airports such as Atlantic City, Hartsfield-Jackson, Nashville, Boston Logan, Baltimore/Washington, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston Bush, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Memphis, Orlando, Chicago O’Hare, Southwest Florida, and Tampa have been impacted.

Is Travel Insurance Worth It?

Trip cancellation and interruption coverage is the most common form of travel insurance, making up nearly 90% of travel protection plans sold. Travel medical: When you travel to another country, typical health insurance plans — including Medicare — don’t cover you. Like all forms of insurance, travel insurance policies don’t cover every event that can impact your vacation. “When you travel using airline miles and hotel points, most credit card travel insurance policies won’t cover the trips,” says Huffman. “If you do not get travel insurance, you are rolling the dice,” says Hines, who adds she always recommends travel insurance to her clients.

Steeped in yearning and chockablock with shocks, “Talk to Me,” the first feature from the Australian filmmaking brothers Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou, is a horror movie huddled tightly around a story of filial grief. The result is an enduring melancholy that no amount of ghouls or gore can entirely dispel. Yet Mia remains alienated, hanging awkwardly apart from her raucous, thrill-seeking friends, wearing her bereavement like a scarlet letter. The rules are simple: Grip the hand, say “Talk to me,” and a ghost will appear. The spirit’s move-in is easy; the eviction is where things get sticky.

JetBlue’s Spirit sacrifice
  + stars: | 2023-07-06 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
NEW YORK, July 6 (Reuters Breakingviews) - JetBlue Airways (JBLU.O) is going for broke on its attempt to buy Spirit Airlines (SAVE.N). Eschewing the benefits of what the government branded a “de facto merger” to win Spirit might make sense, however. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Spirit grew capacity nearly 500% since 2010, far outstripping competitors. JetBlue’s concessions, which include selling Spirit’s operations at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, may not be enough, though. While the DOJ’s complaint against the merger does lean on harms from the alliance, it also includes Spirit executives warning of risks even without it.

June 16 (Reuters) - Spirit Aerosystems (SPR.N) has reached a tentative four-year contract agreement with the 6,000-member machinists union employed at its Wichita, Kansas plant, the union said Friday in a statement. "This fair and competitive contract recognizes the important contributions of our factory employees and ensures that Spirit can successfully meet increasing demand for aircraft from customers," Spirit Aerosystems said in an emailed statement. A slowdown could have impeded Boeing as it tries to recover from ongoing 737 and 787 production glitches. A stoppage could have also had a detrimental effect on already-fragile Spirit AeroSystems, which has been responsible for several recent production flaws affecting Boeing jets, including a 737 bracket installation problem. In May, Spirit said it expects cash burn of about $100 million to $150 million in 2023.

(Reuters) -Spirit AeroSystems Holdings Inc said on Wednesday it expects a $31 million hit to full-year gross profit from disruptions and rework related to a Boeing 737 MAX fuselage production problem, and that more related costs are anticipated. “Additional costs are expected, including costs Boeing may assert to repair certain models of previously delivered units in their factory and warranty costs related to affected 737 units in service,” Spirit said. Rework costs for affected 737 fuselages at Spirit’s Wichita, Kansas-based production facility are projected to amount to $5 million, an expense of about $100,000-$150,000 per plane. The company has also started to build and deliver production-conforming 737 fuselages under a revised process, it said. Losses on the A220 amounted to about $81 million, including $46 million in non-recurring supply chain costs as well as other costs related to production schedule changes.
