Strasbourg for Book Lovers
  + stars: | 2024-06-10 | by ( Seth Sherwood | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Attention, bibliophiles: Put Strasbourg, the largest city in eastern France, on your radar. Once home to the godfather of publishing — the 15th-century printing-press pioneer Johannes Gutenberg — the city is the UNESCO World Book Capital for 2024. The annual Fête des Imprimeurs on June 29 and 30 in Place Gutenberg will showcase all of the trades involved in bookmaking, including through interactive workshops. But the UNESCO events aren’t the only reasons to visit. Strasbourg has many spots for the literary-minded that are permanent fixtures, from comic shops and indie book emporiums to historical libraries and antiquarian specialists.

James Rainey, who serves as the commanding general of Army Futures Command, said it's too soon for the service to establish a new drone branch, reiterating a point made by other Army leaders. These systems have been used for strikes, reconnaissance, targeting, and more on a scale previously unseen, and Ukraine established a drone branch earlier this year. That said, top Army officials don't feel a drone branch is needed right now. AdvertisementArmy Undersecretary Gabe Camarillo previously pushed back on the proposal to establish a drone corps. "I don't think it would be helpful to have a separate drone branch," he said.

A national cricket team that most Americans didn’t even know they had beat one of the sport’s global powers Pakistan, for whom the game is a national obsession. “There is this pivot from global north to global south,” said Chadwick. The first ever international fixture was between the United States and Canada in 1844 in New York. The World Cup is being carried in the US on Willow TV, a streaming service that is also available on cable systems for an extra fee. The global game, soccer, has several times hubristically tried to conquer the US and it’s taken years to reach its current level with strong pro leagues the MLS and the NWSL.

Election season in Europe rarely sets the pulse racing. But citizens, the people charged with voting in members of Parliament, did not seem to care that much. I’ve seen their interest firsthand. Why is politics in Brussels, which has always been seen as boring and technocratic, suddenly becoming almost sexy? As citizens are drawn more into continental politics, the democratic deficit in Europe is slowly beginning to evaporate.

Hallworth's business, Dan Car Logistics, ships more than 100 flash cars a year. If anything, he says, the flow of wheels has reversed; he’s often transporting cars from London to Dubai for people travelling or doing business there. December was the busiest month, and the biggest destinations for cars leaving the UAE were Frankfurt, Zurich and Chicago. Some of Hallworth's clients have been put off storing cars in cities like London. “We always want the owner’s ID, the registration documents of the cars and to get a feel of the customer,” he says.

The manufacturer of Taser devices and other security companies are now designing and marketing body cameras specifically for retail workers. “Body cameras are just one of the many ways that we work to support a safe store environment,” the spokesperson said. Bakery chain Greggs gave employees body cameras after a rise in sausage roll thefts and threats from customers. Applebaum also expressed concerns about the information the body cameras are collecting and whether it could be used to stymie union organizing attempts.

ASML , the biggest maker of equipment used to manufacture semiconductors, said on Monday it has opened a test laboratory for its High NA EUV lithography equipment, together with Belgium chip research firm Imec. Among chip manufacturers, only TSMC, Samsung, Intel and memory specialists SK Hynix and Samsung are able to manufacture using ASML's current generation of extreme ultraviolet or EUV machines. The new High NA tool allows for up to 60% better resolution, and is expected to lead to new generations of smaller, faster chips. ASML repeated on Monday that it expects customers to begin commercial manufacturing with the tool in 2025-2026. To date ASML has only shipped one other test machine, to Intel in the United States, which plans to use the tool in its 14A process in 2025.

Over the past turbulent decade, through myriad self-inflicted troubles, Hunter Biden has relied on the kindness of friends and family — wives and girlfriends, business partners, his father and, most recently, a Los Angeles lawyer who provided the president’s son a $7 million lifeline. With Mr. Biden’s trial on gun charges set to begin on Monday in Delaware, Mr. Morris has said he might need to sell some real estate holdings or other assets if others do not step up to fill the gap, according to people familiar with the situation. He hopes to pressure the president’s advisers into helping find new donors, people close to the situation said. Financial troubles are nothing new for President Biden’s son, and his current woes are unlikely to prevent him from mounting a sturdy defense. But it adds a layer of stress and uncertainty, and could limit his ability to hire expert witnesses or other specialists in the gun case or in his trial on tax charges in California in September, they said.

Gen Zs are set to make the biggest splash this summer, with surveys showing they are upping their vacation plans and spending more than older travelers. The survey of more than 2,000 Americans showed Gen Zs are planning to travel for longer periods and to take more expensive vacations at higher rates too. But how Gen Zs — often defined as those born between 1997 and 2012 — plan to fund their travels differs from other age groups too. Roeschke also noted that Gen Zs will spend time finding ways to trim travel costs, rather than canceling or postponing their trips. But the business experience in the retail health clinic space has largely disappointed. Walmart and the problem of volume vs. priceIn 2019, Walmart announced a bold initiative to open 4,000 in-store health clinics by 2029. "Primary health care is a low margin business," said Arielle Trzcinski, a principal analyst covering health care at research firm. "Compared to what they see in traditional retail, health care is a fundamentally different business," Trzcinski said, citing the challenges of navigating insurance companies and administrative burdens that health care brings. In-store health clinics can be profitable and viable, and retailers are experimenting with piecemeal approaches tailored to the local market.

CNN —Ukraine should be allowed to use French weapons, including long-range missiles, against targets inside Russia from which Moscow attacks Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron said Monday. The SCALP missiles have a range of up to 155 kilometers (96 miles) and carry a 400-kilogram (881-pound) high-explosive penetration warhead, according to the Missile Threat project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. A brain scan found telltale signs of vascular damage in Nicholls’ brain, which occurs when the tiniest blood vessels are starved of oxygen. Not only was Nicholls blood negative for amyloid and tau, the test suggested that his brain amyloid might be normal, with no distinguishable signs of the disease.

Rishi Sunak has a new target: Sex education
  + stars: | 2024-05-16 | by ( Rob Picheta | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Ben Birchall/PA‘Utterly disgraceful’The new draft guidance from the government, published Thursday, takes aim at the way sex and relationships are taught to English children in both primary and secondary schools. Under the new approach, children can’t be taught sex education before the age of nine, while “explicit discussion of sexual activity” will be delayed until children are 13. Gender identity, or the fact that people can change gender, is meanwhile “highly contested and should not be taught” at all, according to the Department of Education. But education specialists worry that school pupils have become the latest victim of that push. “But when a political ideology comes into it, it becomes more difficult for the whole of the education world to move behind it,” he added.

Neuralink deemed the risk low enough for a redesign not to be merited, the sources added. Neuralink is testing its implant to give paralyzed patients the ability to use digital devices by thinking alone, a prospect that could help people with spinal cord injuries. The company said last week that the implant's tiny wires, which are thinner than a human hair, retracted from a patient's brain in its first human trial, resulting in fewer electrodes that could measure brain signals. The company said it managed to restore the implant's ability to monitor its patient's brain signals by making changes that included modifying its algorithm to be more sensitive. In the weeks after the surgery, "a number of threads retracted from the brain," Neuralink said in a blog update last week.
